Matchbox King Size No. K-12. Restoration of the Scammell model mobile crane.

The hero of today's video is the Scammell mobile crane truck, which hit the market in 1969. In 1971, after changing the wheels to the Superfast type, it was produced until 1974. It is one of the classic die-cast models, very popular among children. I received this model from a friend in England. It was complete with minor gaps. As usual, I had to replace the missing tires. The car also had no decals. I had a lot of difficulty removing the old paint from this truck because caustic soda couldn't handle this type of paint. I also made a copy of the box, which was very impressive. Thank you for watching the video, I publish car repair videos on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This is a big favourite model of mine - when I was a kid, in the late 1960's, and early '70s, my dad was a civil engineer, and the company he worked for had a real one of these, which I saw working several times. It was orange rather than yellow, and the Matchbox one is rather simplified, but I still love it. I always wished that the outrigger jacks worked, though.
The plastic that the red wheel hubs are made from is rather odd - it shrinks over time. I have had a couple of boxed models, that have rarely, if ever, opened, and yet the polyethylene tyres Matchbox always used, have fallen off the hubs. The tyres never change, as the plastic used is inert, and very high quality. (I have dug some up from my back garden, and after a wash in hot water, they still look brand new) The hubs have shrunk. They also, but rarely, crack and crumble away. Just thought you might like to know.
