"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on CZcams. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on CZcams, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

If the Democrats want my vote, they need to be the best on the ballot. This whole situation has really highlighted the logical insanity of those who make the lesser evil argument. Like, we could have a Republican candidate who want to kill off half of the country's population, and a Democratic candidate who want to kill off a quarter, and these people would still argue that doing anything other than voting blue is the same as voting Republican. They treat these elections like they're a trolley problem, but fail to realize that at some point the options become so horrific that you just have to walk away and actually deal with the ones who tied all those people to the tracks.

Guys, "give us the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to know the one from the other". You are not voting for politicians or a single policy, you vote for a set of policies and the overall direction of the country. It sucks to swallow that pill, but most politicians don't care and are fine either way. Sure, you (not you specific maybe) showed Hillary the finger and i'm sure she hated it, but the "short term pain" price is payed by generations thanks to the supreme court, the rolled back environmental regulations, the development of the Trump cult and all the other fallout to punish that woman. And while you punished her, you rewarded Trump. No matter how you decide, most likely a horrible person profits. So voting or not voting based on an issue where every other party would act even worse - most people who make those kind of decisions, are ignorant or selfish *ssholes who will not pay the price. Ask women in Alabama about that short term pain. Or r*pe victims who have to go through a pregnancy as a constant reminder. Or people who will lose their health care. Kyle is in a safe place with his white wealthy family and he will even profit from a Trump win.
If Trump wins and i have to endure that stupid rambling in the news for 4 more years, i hope his goons do the worst they can so they show you guys what you get when you want to show them. Politicians don't care, they have their committee positions and connections, but that "equally bad" candidates make a giant difference for millions of normal people and if you vote against their interest, you are selfish or stupid.

It just seems odd that people are upset about this when all the other wars were ok. I mean what is particularly bad about this one. Between 280,771-315,190 civilians died from direct violent action in Iraq at the hands of the US AND that completely ignores the death toll from indirect actions, environmental poisoning etc... and if you cared you were a traitor. In Afghanistan 70,000 Afghan and Pakistani civilians are estimated to have died as a direct result of the war. Its not even the US doing it directly this time. Yes it is bad but in the scheme of things we have done far worse for far longer and have more blood on our hands than an ocean could wash clean (to paraphrase Shakespeare).

    • @limitisillusion7
      @limitisillusion7 Před 4 měsíci

First of all, those other wars you mention were driven by revenge. Americans were attacked directly on US soil. But even as the lies that started those wars dissolved, there's a new phenomen occurring more recently. Are you familiar with quorum sensing? A definition from the national library of medicine is as follows: Quorum sensing is a process of cell-cell communication that allows bacteria to share information about cell density and adjust gene expression accordingly. Now make the analogy to humans. Our "cell-cell" communication has improved in the last 20 years since 9/11. The internet has greatly improved the communication between nations. Culture are melding together and forming new traditions. Covid and the accompanying supply chain disruptions have made it abundantly clear that nations which historically _seemed_ to be enemies are actually mutually dependent on each other for maintaining their standard of living. This "quorum sensing" can be framed as growing empathy. In other words, we are learning from our mistakes and communicating in order to encourage cooperation. We are _quicker_ to recognize a lack of empathy and speak against it than we were a mere 20 years ago. This pattern is promising, and our past failures are not something to be looked down upon. Instead, we should learn from them and recognize that there is more work to be done.

Here's my take. If I thought Trump would be better on the specific issue of Gaza then this would be a serious moral conundrum. Because then you'd really be making a choice about values. Unfortunately in a first pass the post election system, effectively you can either vote against one person or vote against another because not voting for either candidate effectively means you've tacitly supported whoever won. So in that case, if Trump was better on Gaza I would be torn on moral grounds.
That said, in all likelihood Trump would be just as bad so for me this issue is an electoral wash in a general election. It doesn't mean it's morally irrelevant. It just can't be a deciding factor between the two people who are the only ones who will win.
That said, I'm 100% in favor of voting uncommitted in a primary. And I wouldn't blame anyone who lost a loved one if they didn't see this general election as a matter of harm reduction.

The issue here is that even if Biden calls for a ceasefire, it means nothing. He would most likely only issue a statement near the election if Michigan looks bad enough and then immediately retract it after winning reelection. Statements mean nothing without action, and as long as supporting Israel benefits US imperialism, action will never happen from any POTUS. On this issue, there is legitimately no lesser evil. And this goes to my broad point that "evil is evil regardless of severity."

This is the true failure of electoralism. We keep having to choose one lesser evil after another after another, and the dial still shifts towards evil. You CANNOT TRUST a leader to have your best interest in mind, full stop. The incentives of rulership are different from the incentives of the ruled. The politics you have to play to lead a country inevitably involve moral compromises that the constituency does not support. You can't outsource your best interests. You can't outsource your morality. The only way to live without moral compromise is within a horizontal power structure.
Stop thinking of 'saving democracy' through electing some old idiot who runs on the premise that he's not the other guy. Go local. Build local power and autonomy. Community gardens, housing and worker cooperatives, mutual aid. The more independent your community is the less it can be governed, and in turn the less it has to rely upon systems that treat it as an expendable resource. Rely on consensus-based decisions that subjugate nobody, and everyone's freedom and well-being can be protected.
You want to save democracy? There's an old saying - Anarchism is democracy taken seriously.
