Keepers really have a different type of brain. You don't realize how difficult it is until you try it. The positioning, timing, reflexes, awareness, bravery and confidence to just make a regular save is incredible.

Having a goalie who is great with his feet and can pass and progress the ball intelligently is crucial. Being good with the feet is just a plus, but not necessary, Buffon and Casillas sucked with their feet but they still were TOP for so long because of how good they were. Besides Neuer also got some stupid goals because of that, he tried to play with his feet way too much and ended fucking it up, the main thing for GK are their hands.
@@MzAbbyxz Neuer is as good as them with his hands and in terms of reflexes he is even better, now he is good with his feet which separate him from others, it also allow better passes from your goalie, which Neuer is a references at and I'm talking about long passes who put pressure on the opposite defense

Also the space that opens further up the pitch because he is an option for a pass more often than the keepers you mentioned.. Also the game has changed during the careers of casillas and buffoon and so have the skills required.. You know who was partially responsible for that? Manuel Neuer.. The hands are still number one but the feet are a huge part nowadays

Goalkeeper definitely don't get to recognition they need. People only remember goals and skills of outfield players. A goalkeeper can make 100 saves and nobody remembers but it only takes one mistakes from goalkeeper and people will forever remember his mistakes.
I feel it is the Defensive Midfielder, also known as the holding midfielder. By far the hardest and most underrated position. You are the connection between defence and the attack, the anchor. Covering defenders going forward, starting attacks, intercepting opponent attacks, dictating the tempo of the play. A great defensive mid will make defenders life easy and attackers life bliss. Some great examples are Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Ngolo Kante, Jorginho, Nemanja Matic, Fabinho, Roy Keane, Patrick Viera and many others.

Just some perspective on what you said about goal keepers being under so much pressure during penalties. Although it would seem that way due to the difficulty, it’s actual the penalty taker who has the most pressure as they are expected to score as the odds favours them (around 7/10 penalties are scored) and if they miss they are especially in a big game they are heavily criticised, whereas the keeper isn’t expected to make the save, if they do they are the hero and if not saved no one blames them.
I always feel really happy when seeing someone who doesn't know much about football watching that Higuita's save 🤣. Even when it wasn't happen in official match, it was still very entertaining for any newbies in football world 😁👍.

Being a Scot, seeing René Higuita pull the scorpion kick in, if I remember correctly, was about the 88th/89th minute was both heart stopping and amazing

As someone who plays gk when playing with friends, I always thought the gk position was underrated by both fans and kids growing up playing football. Its actually very fun to play ( a 1v1 save gives me the same adrenaline as scoring ) and its one of if not the most important positions on the pitch ( although every position is important )
I enjoyed playing gk too as a kid. It’s the cheer and applaud you get when you make a save after the defense fucked up or just got outplayed.
The core training to be a goalie is insane. The reflexes training too. Because you need to be able to go fast on the floor even if you’re 6,4 tall. And get back up even faster to go to the other side of the goal..insane!
Modern GKs may be more athletic and fascinating to watch, but there's something about old-school GKs (Lev Yashin, Rene Higuita, Peter Schmeichel, Oli Kahn to name a few) that made strikers have fear in their hearts when facing them

one of the saves featuring on your video and very significant was done by Casillas during the World Cup Final played on South Africa in 2010. Due to the game was tied 0-0 on the last few minutes of the game and Casillas (Spain - Navy Blue Jersey) made the saved against Roben (Holland - Orange Jersey); the game went to extra time where Spain - Iniesta scored giving Spain their first World Cup or Estrella as futbol fans call it.

you are right guys. in soccer there is a team-captain, but there is the goalie too, the heart of the team. he delegates his defense players too and they have to listen. often players apologize for bringing the goalie in certain situations that should have been prevented, because the goalies job is effin hard. he is the only hope when everyone else messed up...

Goalkeepers are also important for ball distribution in the modern game to play the ball either short to the defence or long to the wingers and strikers, or to the centre midfielders in the middle of the pitch. They have to do this fast and think quick and be good with the ball as many teams press high meaning the opposition put pressure on the defensive players when they have the ball

As a goalkeeper you have to read the game. The positioning is the most important skill you need because with bad positioning it is impossible to save shots and you confuse the defense completely.

The most underrated positions are defenders I feel. Every football fan knows the difference between a bad keeper (1-3) and a good one (1-0).

The goalkeepers generally come forward in a 1v1 situation to narrow the angle the striker has to shoot and limit his options.

A striker can make 10 mistakes and score 1 goal and be praised as a superstar, a goalkeeper can make 10 amazing saves and make 1 mistake he will be remember as a failure
Can goalkeepers dunk? I would guess probably yes, but the skill set they are looking for is actually a different one. The typical goalkeeper is 1,85-1,95m (that would be roughly 6'1"-6'5"), so in basketball sizes a guard - small forward size.
The football goal is 24x8ft in size, so the top is significantly lower than a basketball rim. In the videos it looks smaller than it is when you are standing in front of one in real life. When you are in the real life goal you wonder how you alone can cover so much area. So the goalkeepers main skill is to read the game and anticipate where the shot will most likely be coming, so they position themselves at the correct spot to cover as much of the goal as possible. Being quick on their feet is key for that, and a lot of saves where you feel the player simply shot at the keeper, well ... that is because the keeper had made sure he was in the right spot to begin with, the place the shot was most likely to go to. Of course having quick reflexes and as you mention being willing to put your body on the line are also key skills.
One thing such a highlight video doesn't show is the role of directing the defense the goalkeeper has. Because the whole game is in front of him, the goalkeeper often has a view that the other players don't get, so goalkeepers will yell instructions at their teammates like "cover the space on the right", "watch out number 7 is unguarded", or even when you team has the ball and needs to escape the high pressure from the other team "pass to the right", "give it back to me", etc.

being a keeper is hard because the shots are very fast, somebody tested how fast Ronaldo's shot was and it turned out that he was shooting the ball at 80mph.
obviously not everyone shots with that power but that puts it in a prospective on how fast your reflex have to be just to even see a ball that is shot at 50/60mph with everybody in the way.

In my opinion the bad thing about being a goalkeeper is that when you do your job, no one notices you unless you do something really sensational and then they notice you for a few minutes. However, when you make a mistake, everyone immediately realizes that you are on the pitch too, and they will remember it later. For a few games you will remain the one who made the mistake.

I have a friend who loves basketball, specially NBA. He is able to talk about championship stories, legendary matches, know about numbers and statistic, talks to me about the OGs like Wilt, Karim or Bill Russell and he eventually got me going with it, he invites me to his place to watch NBA now and I enjoy a lot. We are from Chile, and so you can understand he is like a soccer fan in America, so he cant share his passion as he would like to. Thing is, when he was showing me about basket I used to not properly appreciate their skills or the beauty of the game, I even felt is was kind of easy . Now a few months after I got interested in basket I think I can kind of understand more the enviroment, the importance of little things like sending a message with a dunk or a block, scoring streaks or you can sense when a player is in the zone , etc and it made me think there are little perks about the game that you wont appreciate when you are new to it. When I watched your reaction to Zinedines video it made me realise what usually people who dont know about football uses to miss. This game biggest difference with basketball is that the ball is never really under control (except when the goalie grabs it) its just bouncing around and players are a tool to drive it through the field. You never grab the ball as in basket, you never conotrol it you just can bounce it with your foot (or any part of the body besides the arms) and expect it to react as comfortable and convenient its for your positioning considering your rivals positioning , momentum, etc. You cant either throw the ball as in american football or basket. You can just kick it or hit it with any part of your body. Consider you also do all of that with the same limbs you are suposed to move your body with. What Im trying to say after I watched most of ur reactions (and specially zidanes reaction) is that this little things means a lot in football. Take for example zidane, his highlights arent THAT crazy as neymars or ronaldiñho, etc. But he is one of the all time greats and with a very unique football style, this guys first touch was the best ever probably. He was so smart as how to touch the ball when it came to him so he can manage the timing of every play. You can see he barely ever loses the ball, every little contact with his chest, foot, thigh, head, shoulder, backheel or whatever is perfect for him to do the next contact or move. Even when he dribbles, every little touch to conduct the ball is simple, but perfect so no defender can touch it, he is always ready to give a pass, score, etc. Thats why he is some of those player who can play slow pace football and dominate anyways. His control is just outstanding. Another player that fits that description is Juan Roman Riquelme. The kind of players whose technique is so good and their football IQ is so high that they can literally play walking. What I was tryng to say is that there are things that dont look too cool at first but but once you understand you can really appreciate them. Remember, football (soccer) is not as espectacular as basket, where u get 20 dunks per game, 20 triples, some blocks each team gets usually over 90 points and even the rules are made for the attackers to flourish. In football is different, is harder to score, and one goal could mean an entire championship (that why it might seem so passionate sometimes). It isnt hard to find 0-0 games and you can tie too. So lot of the entertainment of the sport is the process of a goal even if it doesnt finish in the net, the way they treat the ball is for me the most beautiful part but is hard to understand when u havent played some significant amount of football, the feeling when you properly hit it, or when the ball comes from the air and it feels almost impossible to control and then you watch zidane or bergkamp make a 40 meters ball sleep in one touch is just moving. I hope it doesnt get interpretated as if I were saying something bad about your reactions, of course there are lots of thing you dont know, Im just trying to get you to enjoy it even more, cause it might seem boring at first if you watch an actual game and not only highlights.

In my case (a shitty goalkeeper that never played at any serious level), boxing has helped a lot. Reflex, arms/legs speed and coordination, maintaining eye contact on target, being used to hard contact… and shoulders just never get tired.
There is Metal Mesh in the ball and detectors on the goal line to work out if it crosses the line (whole ball) This has only been the case for 5 or 6 years though.
Also they recently introduced VAR (video assisted Referee'd) so Goal decisions are checked and offsides can be too, or any situation when the ref makes a clear and obvious error (although in reality they still get it wrong sometimes, but it is a lot less than it was)

Is like they train to try and stop a bullet. Actually some of the training reflexes involve using a NFL football ball or some type of weird shaped ball to help the goalie with their reflexes, I’ll find a video for you guys to watch

hardest thing i found being a kepper is that you may only be called upon once in a match or a 100 times in a match but you have to be ready at any moment to be fully swtiched on and ready no as easy as it sounds when you might have nothing to do for 20 mins then the next moment you have to be ready at peak form.
