Again, a very clear video on how to play a (this) game. Every time I buy a new game, I first watch your gameplay video. After that I start reading the rulebook. In this case your video actually convinced me to buy the game. Keep up the good work Rodney, many thanks!
I hope you have a wonderful time playing Roel, thank you kindly for the support!
NOTE: I had to pull down the original upload, due to an edit error, so if you watched previously and don't mind playing it again, it would really help the health of the video, as CZcams examines views, comments, and interactions. Not looking for or encouraging fake views - only mean if you watched previously. This is just due to having to re-upload, as CZcams doesn't provide a way to retain the same links when correcting a mistake.
Thank you for uploading the new video even though it hurts you ratings. This seems to be a very strange policy that discourages creators from putting out the best content they can. I do not understand how you tube works but do I understand correctly that you would benefit in some small way if I leave a comment under every single video even if I have nothing useful to say except that I love your videos?
I preordered a copy yesterday... I'm pretty sure im going to watch it a few times when I get the game :D
I thought maybe you reuploaded because everyone DID want to hear that voice ;)
Well, it works out in this case because the rules here are pretty long and I planned a second (possibly 3rd) viewing anyway to get it down. Thanks Rodney!
@@sandrabasel1545 Any comment is helpful Sandra, thank you. I don't want to encourage people to do it just for the sake of it, but it is what CZcams tracks. So if you do watch and enjoy a video and leave a comment, it's always appreciated!
Rod is hands down the Boss. Every time I get a new game, instead of trying to explain the rules to my game group, we just watch Rod's video. Perfection. Nobody does it better
Very kind of you to say Eric - very glad to be a virtual part of your game group :)
Every time!!!
Man is seriously the king of this hobby in my opinion. Absolute legend.
The additional humor is welcome and appreciated.
Glad you enjoy those little moments :)
The band aid delivery was impeccable. lol
Great video! However, I spotted an error at 0:25. You said that no one wants to hear your pirate voice for the entire video. You are mistaken.
When I read "I spotted an error", I near jumped put of my skin. Whew.
I debated whether that joke was “too soon”
did he just blind pull exactly 6 of each event deck?...Rodney's powers continue to grow...
Lol I was about to comment the same thing. The most impressive part of the video lol
And he flexed with the fan spread of the cards in case we had any doubt about how many were there 😂
He has them a little separated from the main deck, so they're easy to pick up. Watch just before he pulls the cards from each deck, and you'll notice there is nothing blind about it. Rodney, like many a board gamer, seems to leave as little to luck as possible ;)
Don’t ruin the magic! Rodney has board game super powers!
@@teehlfx5238 Ever since Hogwarts snubbed me and declined my application, it has been my life's mission to poo poo all over magic :p
RULES TIP! One item that can be a little tricky to remember, is in what situations different crew can participate. Here's some guiding principles!
1) The only time players cannot use their crew abilities to help another player/crew member is when they directly affect weapons stats in an attack: BLOCK, +1 DAMAGE, or +1 ACCURACY. Otherwise, you can always use adventure cards or your abilities to help another player/crew member.
2) Equipped ability cards generally only affect the crew that has them equipped (unless the card says otherwise).
How do I gain xp? It just says in the rules "when you gain xp do BLANK." but when is that? When do i gain xp? do you always gain xp after combat? is it quest based and it will tell me on a quest card or something?
@@monkeyfeed908 It will instruct you when it happens.
@@monkeyfeed908 You get XP from the numbered sections in the story book. Took us ages to pick any up in our first campaign!
@@gargk999 i figured it out kinda. it says we get 1 xp but is it 1 xp total or 1 xp per person or is it even 1 xp per character? rules around XP are weirdly missing from the rule book it seems. It literally says "gain 1 xp" so do we just gain 1 xp total and we have to fight over who gets to spend it?
With coins it makes sense you only get one total bcuz the items u buy with coins go into a communal area. but with XP it doesnt go into a communal area, it goes to one character and nothing else. We are working together but it makes it weirdly competitive and very "hey, you got the last xp this ones mine." "no way man u bought the lamp and i didnt want it so the xp is mine." "guys thats unfair i only have 2 ppl!"
just seems like if the rules were outlined somewhere then we could come to an agreement? idk plz halp
@@monkeyfeed908 It is 1xp total, not per character.
How strong is Rodney to just be able to toss around that heavy game box one handed. Amazing grip strength 🤯 😁
I think he tosses just the cover.
Sometimes, I just watch these videos solely for the box-flipping skills. Mesmerizing!
Ain't no way that box is full. This thing is HEAVY.
I think he jsut tosses the cover.
Minute 2 I was READY, but by minute 4 I was scared by how big this game became 😳
It feels that way, but once you've played through the intro walkthrough and watched this video you'll be all set. It's not particularly complicated, it's just big because there's lots to explore.
I just got through the 1st event deck, not sure how many hours it took, but I only have explored the first 2 pages. The game is huge!
Hope you didn't stay scared!
Every journey begins with the first step, then the second, third, …. 😊
Normal or Brutal difficulties : that escalated quickly!
We literally stopped reading rulebooks and just watch your videos right before we play
So happy to know these have been helpful - happy gaming!
This is the way. Watch it Played for theory. Rahdo for practical. Rule books for in-game reference.
Definitely a great looking game! I like the concept and the mechanics. Reminds me a little bit of Forgotten Waters. Great video, as usual.
Above and Below and Near and Far are my two favourite games so I’m 100% positive I’ll love this game as well!
I hope you enjoy it, if you get a chance to check it out!
hi Miranda! How difficult is it to get into these games if you are not an experienced board gamer? These games are gorgeous, but seem like so many rules would be hard to follow and difficult to create a good flow of play. Would you recommend to new boardgamers who are not used to so many rules? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
@@mariasaha8303 I'm sure Miranda will get back to you soon, but if it helps, I have a little playlist here of games that might be good for new gamers, if you think that might help as well. Cheers!
@@WatchItPlayed thank you! I will check them out, and thank you for the amazing work on these videos, they are fantastic!
@@mariasaha8303 I would say Above and Below is very easy to figure out and get into if you're interested in any of Ryan Laukat's games, as is Roam, and Islebound. Near and Far is great, but adds a campaign aspect if you want to experience the entire thing and is a little more complex in terms of things to remember.
I was so confused after having watched the video it was gone! Can’t wait to watch it again with my wife and girls! Thank you!
Thanks for coming back :)
I truly appreciate the clarity in your game overviews. Thank you very much.
You're very welcome James - glad you're enjoying!
Thank you, Rodney. You helped us get this great game to the table in record time & sorted out quite a few misunderstandings. Keep up the great work!
So nice to hear it was helpful Matt - happy adventuring!
I often watch your videos at least twice: Once to help me decide IF I want the game. Then a second time, after it comes in, as a precursor to reading the rulebook. Thank you!
You're very welcome - have a great time playing!
Watched the original all the way thru, great work and dedication yet again to make sure we have the best info available when learning a new title. A+ as always 👍👍
Thank you kindly Philip!
Very clear and understandable summary of this game, thank you! Just got our copy in the mail and this has helped us to feel a little less overwhelmed jumping in.
Have a great time adventuring!
This is a FANTASTIC guide! I had done D&D for years, but my wife had never played a game like this. She watched this video several times and she was the one who wanted to buy this game! You got my wife into RPG's!!!! Thank you, Rodney, thank you!!!!! You rock!!!!!!!!!
So glad the video helped with that, and kudos to your wife on digging in and finding the method that worked for her.
@@WatchItPlayed We are having a fantastic time learning new games from your videos...thanks again!!!!
We cannot say enough good about this game! This video helped us TREMENDOUSLY and for a long time we kept going back to certain chapters in the video for help. You did an amazing job. I am so happy the company asked you to review this one. It made it so much simpler to learn!!!
A lot of moving parts in this one!
Great job with this video. For such a big, heavy game I was able to follow along for the entire explanation with no problem.
So glad it was helpful Michael!
Just played the quick-start scenario last night and we struggled with a few of the rules. I'm so excited to see you have a video up this morning that we can review before our next session!
My hope is that the video can help smooth out a few areas for players - have fun adventuring :)
As with most games, there are also be some small mistakes or unanswered questions in the rules. Be sure to visit the Boardgamegeek.com forums to ask or find answers to rules questions (including spoilers if you need).
Dude. I've been watching your videos for years and absolutely love them You not only make it easier to discover how to play these games but you have also gotten me to buy some games I may have overlooked but now truly enjoy. Keep em coming.
Thank you so much for the kind words :)
Yeyy, I bought this a few weeks ago after waiting for it to go to retail for months as I missed on the Kickstarter and my favourite game-tutorial-guy (you!) Has posted this!!! Thank you!
You're very welcome - glad you found a copy Sydney - have fun playing :)
Well done as always Rodney! I love watching your videos after I've played the game for a bit to make sure I'm doing everything accurately.
Glad it helps Dustin - happy adventuring!
Agree. I do the same. Really helpful.
Thanks for the great videos Rodney :) You're an excellent teacher!
Very kind of you to say Ryan!
Thank you for introducing us to my first RPG-like gaming experience! We finished the campaign and absolutely loved it. I can see us playing through over & over in years to come to explore more lands! :)
So glad you enjoyed the time you put into playing the game Teej - and thanks for the kind tip!
This video was amazing, you talk like a true professor and helped me a lot! Thank You!
So glad you found it helpful - have fun playing Guilherme!
I love this whole string of games. Near and Far is a blast. Can't wait to get my hands on this one. And the artwork is sublime!
The worlds that get built for these games are so beautiful.
It’s so much more complex than near and far. So beautiful though!!
My copy should arrive this weekend! Excited to try it out and thanks for the tutorial!! Great job as usual!
Thank you kindly Adam!
Thank you so much! These videos are SO helpful!
So glad you're enjoying (have a great time adventuring!)
One of the more complex games I've seen lately! Thanks for helping clear up some of the rules in this video, Rodney!
A pleasure to assist Andrew!
Thanks a lot! After the intro scenario and your video, I feel ready to sail on my own.
Happy adventuring!
Whoo hoo! Just picked up my copy last night! So timely! 🥰👍🏾
Have a great time playing!
Another great video thanks. This video actually makes the begin here intro scenario so much easier to follow as I felt the "quick start" did not give enough depth to various actions Thanks Rodney
Glad this was helpful! I had similar difficulty with the quick start and hoped this might help.
Thanks, Rodney! As usual, this taught me a few minor rules I had been playing wrong.
Glad to know it helped Brian!
Thanks for the video! I picked this up to play through with an old friend while I'm visiting. Can't wait to explore!
I hope you both have a great time playing together!
Flawless as always! Thanks Rodney!
Thank you kindly!
This video was really helpful thanks! We will have our first play session today really looking forward to it.
Have a great time playing Chris!
Really helpful video. Just picked this one up today.
So glad it helped John - have a great time playing!
Excellent top notch content as always Rodney! So pleased are you covering this game. Site note: digging the shirt today with temps as cold as they are here (-28C). It looks warm and quite comfortable with a nice color palette. Good choice!
Thanks Nicole :) Yeah, pretty cold here too! Glad to share a little visual warmth at least!
Phenomenal video! Thanks for so clearly explaining the game mechanics!
Very glad you enjoyed - thanks for the kind words!
You are a wonderful speaker and that was an awesome explanation
Thank you kindly!
My copy arrives in a few days, so this is great timing. The game looks intimidating and somewhat confusing, so I'm grateful for this video.
I hope it helps!
Love this channel. It is very helpful as I'm a visual learner. Kids had a great time
So glad to hear it - happy adventuring!
That was a quite remarkable box spin. Thanks for the video!
You're very welcome!
Thank you! This game has a lot of interesting parts. This time I focused on the battle mechanics, some nice ideas there.
Thanks for checking it out!
Perfect timing will gladly watch again and keep supporting everything you do! Thanks for being you.
Thank you so much!
Was totally waiting for that voice!!
Thanks Rodney for another great instructional video. Can't wait to play it. Still waiting for it in Europe.
I hope it arrives to you soon!
Great demo as always! Thanks, Rodney!
My pleasure!
Welcome back! Game looks very cool!
Good to be back :)
Santa delivered just in time, and you delivered, as always. Merry Christmas, Rodney & Co.
Thank you kindly Patrick - have a great time adventuring!
I’d love to get this game! Just ordered JoTL and your videos will help me so much!
Hey, thanks so nice to hear - I hope you have fun adventuring :)
Ty very awesome how to as usual. Love you guys!
Thanks Rogue!
So glad I watched this! I started playing earlier this week and totally forgot I could skip an action to gain command.
Glad it helped Matthew!
I had a similar thing seven turns into my first game - I'd completely missed that many ship spaces give you an ability card. Rodney reminded me and I got to draw a couple I'd missed.
Can't wait to play this one! Was a little disheartened to find that the sleeves that came as an add-on don't fit (when on the cards) in the box as advertised, but other than that I've never been so stoked to play a board game!!
Beautifully presented rules explanation, as always, Rodney. Thank you SO much ♥ ^_^
Have a wonderful time playing!
I love that new lens!!!
Thanks Bryan!
What a great tutorial. Thanks for this. Been trying to follow the rules but I’ve not found them particularly intuitive. This video is excellent
So nice of you to say. Cheers to Yorkshire!
Love the out of focus lamp in the back
Another fine job at matching your shirt colors with the game art.
Thank you kindly!
This will make my first play substantially easier. Cheers
Have fun!
This looks so cool. This is on my ‘to get’ list :)
Thanks for checking it out!
MASSIVE BOX FLIP! That puppy is H-E-A-V-Y!
Amazing as always Rodney!
Thank you kindly - we're over half done our first campaign of this. Hope you get a chance to play and enjoy!
I really like the subtle focus crossfade at 2:15.
Nice catch :)
Great channel. This and BoardGameBollocks are my favs!
Thanks Dan!
haha I love the suitable replacement idea in this.
Rodney, this game is getting a sequel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ben & I love this game SO MUCH. We would've never tried it without your video. You have introduced us to many great games. We are probably 3/4 of the way through the campaign.
I just saw! Very cool :)
I love your videos!!
Thank you very much!
All your reviews are so well explained and presented. A wholesome treat every time. Thank You! 🤝
So kind of you to say - thank you.
Great overview! Im in a waiting list to borrow it from the library but given how massive it is, i might end up buying it after that.
I hope the previous users do a good job resorting it for you. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Leaving a comment to say thank you for this video!
You're very welcome!
Your timing couldn't be better! I just got my copy last night, and while we played through the Tutorial Scenario, it was a bit disjointed. Your work is appreciated, Rodney!
Yes, my hope is that this video can help smooth out some rough edges!
I did find a slight error :(
At 7:25, you refer to the Galley as the Gallery. Otherwise, another great video! And I’m not jealous that you got yours early anymore because mine arrived today :D
Amazing. You make great videos.
Thank you kindly Chris!
Getting the game Tomorrow after watching this video I will be ready to play it :)
Have a great time playing Israel!
Been waiting for this and its finally out and love your vids :D
Edit : will you do a playthrough?
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: czcams.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/video.html&t=342
This is going to stand or fall on how compelling the story is for the players, I can imagine a lot of false starts getting these rules straight! This must be your longest Watch It Played rules video ever, Rodney :)
Oh no, there have been several longer ones - but this one has a lot going to, to be sure.
This game looks absolutely gorgeous!! Getting it for solo play. Thanks for the video Rodney! 😄
You're very welcome!
Nice I get to watch it again! :D
Thank you Yannick!
Thanks for adding another game to my wish list 😅
Glad you enjoyed what you saw!
Man! That's one whicked box flip!
This game is so good
Petition for a bonus video with the pirate voice!
I just bought this game because it’s Red Raven and was finally in stock where I buy games from. I didn’t actually know anything about the game and wow is it ever complex for my husband and I. But we are very excited to play. I will watch this again to try to figure it out better before we play. This seems much more challenging than Near and Far, which is our only other campaign game.
Yes, this has quite a few moving parts, but I believe in you!
Thanks for the video! I’m ready to go.
Have a great time playing!
Impressive throw for box of that size!
Thank you kindly!
*forgets to take pieces out of box before spinning it* lol man that would suck. Great videos hope i can use you for all my board game inquiries. Thanks!
Glad you're enjoying the videos - here to help, if I can!
Thank you.
You're very welcom!
Thanks Rodney, awesome as always...
With regards to challenges, it's not clear if you are able to use crew abilities and equipped ability cards only if that crew member is participating in that challenge. As per the rulebook:
"You may now use crew abilities, adventure cards, and equipped ability cards to alter the outcomes of the fate draw by spending command to activate their abilities."
Yes, the rule book isn't clear, but I believe this is answered in the video. (I asked many questions about things like this to the publisher, and those answers will be found in the video, even thought he rule book doesn't necessarily state them). Hope that helps.
@@WatchItPlayed First of all, great video! That was actually the only question I had as well after watching it.
In the rule book to me it sounds like that only participating crew members may use crew abilities, adventure cards and equipped ability cards, since on page 19 (3) only after that sentence it says in bold "Any player may also...". Wouldn't this otherwise be at the beginning of the whole paragraph?
From a logical perspective it would otherwise only makes sense that it's allowed to use abilities, adventure cards and equipped abilities of non-participating crew members if those require a command to be spend. Otherwise the only difference of letting another crew member participate in the challenge would be that the skills printed on the crew card will also count towards the challenge.
If skills on equipped abilities from non-participating crew members count towards the challenge it would make a big difference in fatigue management. It would be interesting to know how the publisher intended this to work since it's quite an essential part of the game.
@@heyfrankyboy One item that can be a little tricky to remember, is in what situations different crew can participate.
Absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this game!! Anyone know when we might be able to expect it at retail if we missed the Kickstarter?
Hope you enjoy playing if you track down a copy!
it was pushed back several times, most recent update was this month
The cards are so pretty
Yeah, Ryan builds really nice worlds through his art.
Received my copy last Monday. Perfect timing!! Was there an error in the video posted yesterday? Anyways, keep up the great work!
It was an editing error, but not a rules error.
So glad you emptied the box before spinning it - this is a heavy box that could have broken wrists
Rodney always wears elbow pads and a helmet while spinning game boxes, which we edit out in post. #SafetyFirst
