Thanks for your comments about the audio! The band were exploring new sounds in this session. As early as soundcheck, it was evident that this was not going to be a run-of-the-mill performance. Adrianne Lenker on guitar and vocals, Buck Meek on guitar and backing vocals, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on percussion tinkered with everything from their physical arrangements in chairs to the harmonies embedded within songs they've sung many times before. Krivchenia began, mid-song, to frisk noise from the exterior of his puffer jacket; Oleartchik took off his own jacket just before recording to play shirtless; Lenker and Meek continually beckoned one another to adventure new vocalizations - making excited eye contact when a note hit just right. Then, listening to the soundcheck, Lenker's arms raised in disbelief upon hearing the first notes of "Shoulders" played back in this new form. It's her song, she wrote it, but in that moment it seemed as if she'd never heard it before. The result was an ostensibly stripped-down performance that sounded like the album version's distant, reverb-laden relative; inspired not by the band's recorded material but an ever-evolving, ever-shifting future. "Everything is new every day," Lenker explained. "Including our set lists. We work on things as we go like it's a living organism." "We try to keep it dangerous," Meek added.
I love it when songwriters experiment and take risks. These are amazing. The room must have a great sound and their placement in a semi circle must’ve been awesome to hear live right there.
Love hearing this band fearlessly exploring new sounds, and grateful for the Current fearlessly supporting that exploration. The original is great and this rendition is great.
I love how they’re all just so consumed and lost in the moment, making beautiful music together. Love the passion and focus. That’s the best thing about playing music or making it my opinion.. Just being in the moment, creating something more lovely than words could describe.
Can anyone explain the two capos on one guitar thing the lead singer has going on? I LOVE this song, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't seem complicated enough for something so out of the ordinary.
@@thecurrent honestly the chorus doesn't sound bad in this style but the rest is really hard to listen to. I guess that's the thing with experiments is the results can be erratic
Holy reverb batman! Please fix audio. The album version is much better her vocals start to break down and then so do the guitars none of that here just fade out gently. Kinda disappointing

one capo on 3 strings, 2nd capo on other 3. Gives some alt tuning, plus up a whole step.
