Someone give this woman a job as a costume designer in a film! This is so beautiful.
Or in baroque opera!
Vivian Lee are you sure about that?
I agree. As a seamstress if she were to do it full time as a job it would not be as fulfilling as it is now. When you have to do something it sometimes takes some of the joy out of it. When you sew for others there is another level of stress and conflict. I have my own shop but I do not sew clothing for others (I have made dresses but they are ready to wear and not commissioned).
Luvelehh there are lots of different ways to get into historical fashion, there are Facebook groups/ youtubers and events such as reenactments and history lecture as well as classes for sewing/ costume design that can help you make friends with the same interest or time period :) you can also research in different ways focusing on type of time period/culture or use books such as Janet Arnold’s that has historical patterns you could have a go makeing yourself ^_^ I to find the makeing part is a lot more fun less stressful when it’s not for a commission x
On instagram, there's a lot of them. :) I love this too!!!
i love that she's aware and articulate about how historical life was different from fashion, and that she doesn't aspire to actually live in the 18th century
it's such a refreshing change from people who are love period dress but claim that they were 'born in the wrong century' not realising the totality of what that means, especially for ethnic and religious minorities, women and members of the LGBTQA community
exactly
ummm... yeah I didn't say that. I'm saying it's nice that this woman is aware of those kinds of traumas from THAT time in history. I'm not talking about the injustices of today, because even though we should be talking about them, I was specifically only talking about this video.
but you can do all that now you ARE watching historical events history is always happening
no you like the romanticised ideal of that society
Given what this woman has graciously explained about not wanting to recreate 18th century life and being aware of how hard it was back then, I feel like it's kind of unfair to refer to her as a "modern day Marie Antoinette". Clearly this lady has a lot more going on.
Ciara Creagh-Peschau , How do you mean? I am familiar with Marie Antoinette but I want to know why you feel this way.
@@crystalprice1942 because Marie Antoinette was known to live in a rich bubble when the french people lived in miserable conditions?
Maybe they called her that because marie was known to be a fashion icon/trendsetter?
@@Stephanie-xz7qd possibly yes
Could be talking about her and Marie Antoinettes clothing, I do get that kinda vibe from these dresses
This is awesome. I wish gowns like this were still a thing. They're such a beautiful classic.
Jodi Howell as a consumer, YOU set the trend
yeah its pretty but very cumbersome
yeah I'd wear these anyday! they are soo so so gorgeous!
Apparently, Goth look took some and kept it alive. But, those dresses are hard to walk in, especially not used to. So most women will complain.
I love the 1910-1919 fashions,I think they would be more practical to wear for today's lifestyle, even with a corset underneath.
That blue gown is just beautiful, an artist, this woman
Lo Fernandes I agree. The gold accent is stunning 👌🏻
I love how this lady acknowledges that 'repeating' history wouldn't necessarily be the best thing!
Clara x
This woman should work for the movie industrie. She has a lot of talent and skill!
Ruth Steiner couldn't agree more
*Industry
My friends: you should dress casual
Me:
So we're just gonna skip over how she got to go to the BALL IN VERSAILLES?!!!! I never knew this was a thing that people do. I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg but at least I something new to dream about🤩
Just got back from france...apparently youll spend 1k+ to just attend and dress for it...amazing palace.
@@ag-bk5wf Well....it does take serious money to maintain the building.....so...it would be well worth it to many of us!!! It would take me 5 or so years to save up (because I'm a broke a$$ veteran) but it would be totally worth it. It would be a amazing honeymoon adventure!!!!! Far better than the standard go to the Bahamas honeymoon!!!!!
I want to go to the ball! 💃🏻💃🏻
@@dianebrady6784 OMG I agree!! Definitely a bucket list item of mine and I'd save up for it. Probably would take about 5 years to make the money and acquire the attire but it would be so worth it when the time finally comes❤
Me too, haha.
I wish we still dressed like this
um...the sides fold in like accordions
We could bring them back if we tried 😂, honestly, I’d be the first one to vote yes if an election for bringing back classic dressing
Occurred, it would be amazing.
My phone lagged and posted without me finishing typing lol
honestly i would be the first too lol modern clothing has no place in memory of how nice and classy it is because its the opposite. cheap, not very well made and 90% of it is gone out of style in a month
Dawn Ivey Hair I'm too lazy to fo this per day....so I would probably be one of the few who would admire the dresses but rarely ever wear them....
WOW, I've always loved historical clothing, especially Georgian styles, I would totally walk around with you anywhere in period fashion, I just wanna dress up all day and make up dresses, I adore you ! ! :O
MrLOLgab me too!! Like I have designs drawn down....but no one to make them!!
yeah, I can't make up anything really I just have a giant pinterest board with everything I like tho if you wanna stalk lol It's Antelope Cope
Ahah, yeah I used to do American Village, which is like Colonial Williamsburg type deal, and I got to dress up in colonial stuff and act out, it was pretty cool. But I was in high school and of course that took a lot of convincing from my grandmother! I'm so glad I did it tho, you just gotta risk it for the biscuit aha
thank you ;)
I know, I would wear this any where!
Lauren: "I don't have a recreationist persona or name that I go by"
Racked: "We'll see about that... Marie Antoinette!"
Why on earth does Lauren work in a boring job, when she creates these fabulous designs? She should work in the arts, where her creations are appreciated. Perhaps in movies.
A girl has to eat. and buy fancy fabric. I like my job- and it lets me do what I love- HOW i love it ;)
Lauren, same here. I'm an artist, but I work a 'boring' corporate job. I'm told always that I should be doing something with my artwork. I am, making myself and others around me happy. I love your work! I'm a bit obsessed with Marie-Antoinette, which is how I found this video.
It's hard to do creative work and for a lot of artists doing it full time sucks the enjoyment and creativity out of it, I personally would much rather having a boring job that gave me the money I need to pursue my creative interests freely than be forced into hand sewing costumes I didn't design every day of my life so I can afford to eat
Maybe she also likes her boring corporate job. People have different interests, and not everyone aspires to turn their creative hobbies into a serious profession. Plus the ‘boring’ job is what provides her with the income to do her own thing, so I’d say she is doing just fine.
yes costuming for theatre or Hollywood
I so appreciate how she mentions the economic strife and depression in that era and isn't trying to glorify the aristocracy. I am obsessed with the aesthetics and symbolism of monarchy and nobility, which is ironic because I'm a very leftwing democratic socialist, but we can appreciate the surface beauty of these elements without condoning the inhumane systems that produced them.
"....without condoning the inhumane systems that produced them." Sooo...do you add qualifiers every time you purchase/use products made in China?
Care about the inhumane china government...
@@squirehaggard4749why do you feel attacked? lol
I think that's bomb. If I was Given the chance I'd love to dress up go to 16th-19th century balls. even just a masquerade ball. Recreate the fashion, foxtrot, but to music of 2013-2018 in an orchestrated piece. I was looking at fashion over the centuries, and it's crazy to see how we went from these huge petticoats and robes to jeans t-shirts and short dresses. I’d say bring corsets and petticoats and tunics leather, fur back but modernize them, not so much corsets for a smaller waist, but I think they look sexy if they are form fitting
Mason Perry
Focus shifted away from following the fashion trends of the upper classes after both world wars and working class people realised they were allowed to simplify their clothing. The old styles are very well and good if you want to spend all day sitting in a library with a book but not very effective if you're planning on doing anything else... the upper classes finally folded in the 50s and 60s when it became ordinary for them to have day jobs, thus making the big skirts of the past unsuitable. These outfits would be assembled in 10 or more pieces also cost a fortune to make, you can't really mass produce them with good results unfortunately. Maybe if we reverted to 20s styles, they give freedom of movement and drop the heavy corsetry without losing the elegance
Mason Perry They didn’t wear corsets during this time period (18th century), they wore stays. Stays were a precursor to the corsets of the 19th century. They weren’t as restrictive.
Something like that does exist. You'll find it if you google 'Lolita fashion.'
Just Another Happy Humanist Corsets aren’t restricting. You can do pretty much the exact same thing as you would without a corset/with stays.
I need her as my friend!!
Same! See more of Lauren's style on her Instagram instagram.com/virtuouscourtesan/?hl=en
@@Racked That Instagram page is AMAZING....wow, she has pages of photos of her in gowns from several historical areas, and also gorgeous photography.
Me too!!!! M going to try and find some information on her and contact her!!! I need information!!! I also want to challenge her to make me a HanFu!!!!!
@@dianebrady6784 Weird.
@@dianebrady6784 .... gorl you are obsessed with her
Indigo is my favorite color, so I think the blue gown with gold detailing is my favorite! Spectacular craftsmanship!
I seriously love how she acknowledges the suffering of those from this time. She makes it so clear that she’s interested in the fashion not recreating the way of life.
All the beauty of the Rococo without the starving, I want in!
Same
I make my own dresses from the 18th century, worn authentic dresses also , it’s got to be for me also one of the best periods of fashion. Would love to spend a day with this lady, it takes some work to re create these dresses but so worth it.
Christina Whale You guys are so lucky. I have to buy mine. I was always in the orchestra which kept me from taking sewing classes in school. But I've made a Vogue swing dress all by hand. Turned out beautiful except for the button holes. I found an old pattern that showed how to make hand-sewn button holes but haven't tried making a dress again. Too easy to buy.
Leslie Kendall you might consider delving into Costube. It’s a huge community of costumers (historical and otherwise) here on CZcams, and many of them have very informative tutorials for all skill levels
I don't see mix with Modern fashion but wow her dresses look so good
huedrian 9 You don't supposed to see it. It can be modern materials, decorations or the technique of sewing. To put on these dresses needed other people's help. I think she creates them to look historical but easier to dress up by yourself.
much of the modernity is in the execution. The gold leaf for example is completely a modern adaptation. the patterning is historical. I can get myself into these gowns because I have practiced but it is 1000x easier with help. ( I really recommend having assistance)
in that case i see it, just imagine using the toxic make up of that era, and not using a sewing machine xD
My stays are 100% sewn by hand. Much of my work is done by hand- when possible i prefer to hand sew as I find it meditative. I do use a machine for the long inside seams but if time permitted I would not. Anything you see on the outside is done by hand. Its a fallacy that hand sewing is arduous or weaker than its machine counterpart. Both can serve a purpose. My makeup is modern...although I suspect in the future they will find out our make up is toxic too. ;)
Woow that is taking dedication! :D when i think in modern fashion is less is more, minimalistic, let you move and i've seen modern design inspired in baroque and rococo, but what do you mean is baroque and rococo style with moderns things right? and maybe in the future make up will be good to take care of the skin :D
This video just made me cry because of how emotional I got seeing how passionate she is for her artistic interest. And I am so happy she did not give up on it
You know what ya I wish everyone would dress like this again it’s so elegant and beautiful
Carleigh Nielsen Change begins with the one in the mirror. I dress that way, too.
Leslie Kendall did you make your stays yourself?
Lol i would be wearing hot topic and everyone would be wearing rococo and I would be like: uh
I'm planing on changing my style and start using things that mix modern with Queen Elizabeth I. Now that I know how to sew, it's just up to me
marie antoinette is QUAKING
I can watch you modeling gowns all day. For some reason I have an affinity for this time period including the music. You are extremely talented, love your work...
Lauren has restored my faith in humanity.
Damn she got sewing skills!..as a crafter who also wears my custom tulle skirts as everyday wear, need her in my squad!
Me: I love the 50’s I am also not into recreating the life of the 50’s I just love the fashion. 😊
Mari Curls “Vintage fashion not values” -I’ve heard many a time.
What an amazing lovely dream life she's created for herself. I can really appreciate the dedication to natural fibers and textiles. The clothing we wear nowadays is all so cheaply made and oftentimes the fabric is not carefully considered. It is a real privilege to have a closet full of silks, cotton, and wools. Very rare these days
Your work is beautiful!
RESPECT! Cheers to this inspiring and exceptionally talented woman for having the strength to choose to live her bliss.
I loved this, I'm so inspired by people who dress the way they want to and the detail in her historical costumes is amazing.
I love your style! I dreamed of going to Versailles and actually finally went and spent a week there. Leaving for Venice Tuesday I would love to wear one of your dresses there. My favorite person is more Baroque than Rococo and that was the divine Athenais de Montespan.
Ugh she's so badass! Much admiration for her for just living her best life!
These are so stunning! She can definitely support herself with these gowns, not to mention she really looks the part as well. Beautiful dresses for a beautiful lady :)
I love this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves a meticulously constructed piece of clothing with lots of hand-stitching. Something about it is so satisfying to both make and wear.
I love this mini doc format
Wow these gowns and accessories are amazing, especially that navy blue one at the end. And she has the face and the porcelain skin, she looks like she stepped right out of the king's court....great talent, this lady.
She looks absolutely stunning when she walks around in town in that blue dress.
She looks like a queen.
I love that smirk that she has while garbed in that luxurious blue silk gown. It's haughty yet inviting.
Oh my, the ball at Versailles sounds fascinating! I went there once and it was so ornate & full of history I was overwhelmed. Her dresses are so lovely!
It makes me happy people like this long gone life style! It makes it come back to life and it’s so unique!
This is so amazing and she's so talented!
I just keep watching this! So many gorgeous pieces!
That takes a lot of courage to walk around on the streets, in the sybways and doing normal stuff while being dressed up like that. It looks beautiful but so eye catching and extra (all in good meaning). I applaud her for doing this.
Wow! She is so gifted and an absolute incredible costume designer that the world should know! Brilliant designs 🌹and such a down to earth lady
love this soooooo pretty...the part where shes walking through downtown NYC in her dress was very breath taking
IMMENSELY IMPRESSIVE WORK!! This is better than what you see in most tv series or films. It is criminal if she is not doing this full time and professionally.
People like this woman are quite inspiring to me. Not to take it for granted what now everyone is doing - being uniformed - but that it is possible to reinvent my life and give it a new flavour. One that I enjoy. Thanks to all people showing this to me.
I LOVE this video and what she is doing to be herself!!! SUCH BEAUTY!!!
She looks like Molly Hooper in period dresses. :D And I mean that in the warmest way possible.
I really wish that people dressed more civilised and elegantly in general, everyday fashion at the moment is quite the testament of our uninspired, undisciplined and bored out lifestyle.
Well, everyone can just do their part so I'm trying to dress the way I like (1900-1940 mostly) and set an example of the different ways fashion can look.
She looks gorgeous!
You’re amazing and your talent is phenomenal! I love the look and the fabrics! I admire everything you said and I feel the same way, both about your take on the 18th century and about abandoning your talents. Never change.
I always dreamed of wearing some of these beautiful gowns. Its very classic!
so talented and dedicated. her gowns are so beautiful what the hell!! i would actually like to wear one of her creations one day. she should open a gallery for her work!!!! theyre so beautifully detailed and wow
I love this woman. I collect and sew for and restore antique dolls. I adore hand sewing. It is a lost art form. Good for you and your amazing tallents.
A great modern interpretation of classic 18th Century Court Dress! Great concept!
Amazing! She looks so gorgeous! Her outfits are stunning! This is what I aspire to be and do...
I adore the fact that she mentioned that she wouldn’t want to live in the decade and for the most part appreciates the fashions from the time. So many people are quick to think that bc you wear clothing inspired by or from a certain era, decade you want to go back. That simply isn’t the case for almost everyone who wears vintage, retro, antique clothing.
She is amazing!
I also noticed she wears stays, I’m assuming on a daily basis. Fuxking awesome!
Wow I love what this woman is doing. Her work is amazing!
This is inspiring me to sew even more. Your work is amazing. God bless you
Utterly wholesome. She is very witty, sensible and informed.
I’m so jealous of all your beautiful gowns you get to wear! I love the green striped one !!! 😍💚💚💚💚💚
She is so cool! That’s a real passion
I'm such a fan! I love hand stitching and she inspires me so much!
I use to live in Astoria Queens and I took that subway a billion times when I worked in NYC. I would have loved to have seen you taking the subway and sitting beside me with those gowns....I also trained and worked as a costume designer in my undergraduate studies...that was ages ago...now I spend my time collecting and making videos on Vintage Costume Jewelry. Keep it up, you look amazing and I love that you pursue your passion. I love it!!!!
So creative and Inspiring! I like how you like to express yourself by clothes.
Love your work!
Get em girl! Gorgeous work, so glad you answered the call that kept coming in to you. I get everything you say. You speak to me!
Omg, I always wanted to wear something like that..the dress is just so unique and somewhat so special and beautiful, I’d die to wear it every single day ❤️
She’s pretty, she has a noble high society look. It suits her
She is wonderful!
She should make classes on how she makes her gowns. I want to learn, now! She is such an inspiration!!
she has this silhouette and classical beauty, it suits her very well.
Oh to be so creative & honest about your passions! 💕
Those gowns are amazing. What an amazing hobby.
That blue dress is just Amazing !!!
Beautiful 👏👏👏
This is simply beautiful
this is amazing. I've always wanted to dress like this it's so elegant and beautiful
I love this I absolutely love historic fashion especially the Victorian and Edwardian eras this was so inspiring to allow myself to be expressive in any (positive) way I want. Amazing super amazing.
I love all her gowns
Everything about this video is amazing!
I love these kind of dresses
They are so beautifully made!!!
How talented!
Now this is fabulous
So astonishing!
You are such an inspiration
Live your best life, Lauren!
Shes great. Great seeing people following their passions instead of abandonning them
Wise lady! The history is there from the old generations before for us to learn. She appreciating arts and antiques.... I can somewhat related to her interest's 👌👏👏
Going to a ball at Versailles would be so much fun, I'd love to do that! Her. dresses are so beautiful!
Definitely historical and high couture, love it!!+
Beautifully created, her style is art, sewn art.
Stunning! 👏🏻 I would kill for that blue dress!
I really love people this 💛 you make the world so colourful and beautiful to live in!
Wow. It is amazing. I love history and this is really nice.
Love it! Good for you! 🌸❤️🌸
Wow!!! She is really talented. I wished I could sew like that. You know she could become a fashion designer if she wanted too. Make costumes for movies.
So gorgeous! Impressive work!
