Soulful Singing: Singing to Express, Not to Blend

  • As caretakers of the human voice in melodic form, particularly those embodied by young people, I believe we are tasked with creating a safe space for fulfilling musicking, to nurture sounds and timbres, and to grow the individual. The oft repeated refrain, “drop the jaw” in order to achieve timbral homogeneity (blend) creates an effect that can negate individuality, distinctness, projection, communication, and flexibility. Can we achieve our desired sound differently or better still, wholly embrace the sounds present in the room? I want to offer an alternative perspective that is rooted in Africanness, individuality within collectivity.

    19:00 I wouldn't call it a confused state. Exploration is not part of far too many institutions of learning after 2nd or 3rd grade. The lack of play is a true missing in higher education whether in music performance or in musicology and music theory.
