Hello from Puerto Rico, I'm really happy for you to see that your chest of good memories survived that massive storm. Like you I also have a sailboat which survived both hurricanes in the water (Incredible right?, the secret is in the preparation). I can remember vividly the morning after Maria when I expected the worst and when I first saw my boat again I felt that my soul came back to my body. I feel very lucky as only got very minor damage even though the boat was hit hard by a neighboring boat. Here we can all relate to the suffering and all the necessity that the people of St. Maarten are dealing now. I wish you well on your new boat and I'm looking forward to see new videos of you guys traveling the world.

Useful and informative to see the scale of the damage, as well as cheering to see how well your former vessel held up. That said, the overview of insurance coverage and preparation left me with more questions than I started with. The insurer seemed to say that a one-piece cradle rather than jack-stands would be a requirement for coverage; while it looked like DS II had been on blocks. Albeit this was a storm arguably too immense to prepare for, insights into evaluating the sufficiency of a hurricane hole, how best to prepare the boat, and how to make sure one is covered in the event of a catastrophe would all be welcome. (Admission: I'm working way through the series from season one, so perhaps some of this has been addressed in videos I've yet to see.)

I covet the Southerly's swing keel and wish it was available on a steel pilothouse sailboat. I would purchase the new Southerly 48 if it had a pilothouse and I had enough coins.....I hate standing at a helm in a cold driving wind and rain in a storm at sea nor do I enjoy baking in 100° sun shiny days. Sailboats need one outside and one inside helm.....and yes I realize I'm not an Old Salt of the 1800's bygone days. I was worried for a while that your old Distant Shores II was damaged beyond repair, thankfully not. Thank you Paul for this interesting recap!

A friend Charlotte (so maybe everyone's heard her story already) had a non-refundable ticket to the Virgin Islands, before her flight a hurricane came through causing incredible damage. She decided to go anyway. Stayed in a hotel with no electricity or water for a couple weeks. Got a job on the local newspaper. Convinced me that one of the best times to visit a place and its people is when you can bring at least a little money, a great attitude and a willingness to make do. So if you sold Distant Shores II and then bought Distant Shores III.... can you let me know when you're about to buy Distant Shores IV, so I can make an offer on Distant Shores III?
Good video. I'm always curious about things like insurance and what to do when a hurricane is on the way.

So if you can't lift out of the water and onto a solid cradle, you're SOL insurance-wise? Lots of cruising-grounds don't have lifts or cradle-space available on the hard.
During Hurricane Sandy, my brother's boat survived on it's cradle with 8-ft-plus of water above the hard at high-tide. More boats were damaged in the marina yard as water poured right-over the gunwales or toppled by other shifting boats than those anchored up-river. Some lifted then tilted-over as the first tide receded, only to be damaged as the 2nd-tide came-in.

Unless that hurricane was the most powerful NEVER recorded in human history, the winds were not close to 250 mph. I assume the boat yard owner was referring to km/hr. There have been instances of 1 minute gust of 215mph, but even that is very rare.
250 mph winds would have completely removed any trees, and scraped the land bare.
