    Typically I'd just write a comment here with the running gag of 'guess the filming locations in exchange for a joke prize' (feel free to do that 317Dan) but this time, I want to get out that I am so...purplexed by the decisions of SWR and the 458/4 project.
    I wouldn't mind the idea of making them 4 cars again if they were running the branch routes as I suggested in the video and if the 442, 456 and 707s were still around, but no, the services are still atrocious, short formations still go on, overcrowding is rampant and there are still routes that haven't returned to their usual service (give me back my hounslow loop and 2tph via Bookham.)
    There's always an excuse for everything given, but my sympathy pit is so dry, it's become a den for fennec foxes and it's also really difficult to be symathetic to First Group when their bus division has invested £89 MILLION on battery electric buses.

    • @andrewreynolds4949

      My guess is they stuck them on routes where drivers are already trained on 458s to save on training...

      @@andrewreynolds4949 That to me sounds quite plausible. Also somehting else I forgot to check was clearance. I have an old driver's manual which shows routes it's not cleared for, but it's very out of date (as in, 10 car trains were not permitted to Ascot and Reading, but that's no longer the case.)

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 Před 25 dny

      @@TheDancingGamer01 That procurement exercise by GWR was won by the existing 387 fleet a long time ago. It was basically just to get a better lease price on those units, using the 379 fleet as a threat to get Porterbrook to cave. The battery 350/2 fleet ideas are almost entirely speculation, based on an offhand comment one time by Porterbrook quite a while ago about investigating the possibility of adapting off-lease EMU units with batteries, not specifying which ones they might try if any. I enjoy speculative napkin-planning as much as anyone else, but it has to stay clearly as speculation.

  • @jamtart606
    @jamtart606 Před měsícem +3

    The fact that these are not going on the Portsmouth runs as originally planned just makes zero sense to me.
    Why put all that effort, money & resources into re-gearing the 458s to run up to 100mph and bin off the former 460 trailer cars to then just put them back on the lines they currently run?
    My only real assumption is SWR were forced to do this because of how pathetically long it has taken the 701s to enter service (and they still fully haven't either) meaning that they can't actually go on the Portsmouth runs because of the lack of rolling stock? This could be the reason, I'm not entirely sure though.
    Anyhow, the refurbishment looks good, I just feel like it's a complete waste of time considering they're not fufilling the role they were originally meant to.

If a fleet has become unreliable the defective components need to be identified and replaced, and maintenance procedures reviewed. That is accepted best practice.
