Global Journalism Funding: Insights and Strategies

This session was hosted in collaboration with the Journalism Funders Forum, a peer-learning community of Philea.
Katie Donnelly, a research consultant with Dot Connector Studio, presented the findings from Media Impact Funders’ latest research. This comprehensive study offered a detailed snapshot of the global journalism funding landscape, drawn from extensive surveys and in-depth interviews with media funders and journalists. Dot Connector Studio’s additional analysis of the top 25 journalism funders revealed key trends and shifts in global funding priorities.
One compelling discovery from the report highlighted the diverse motivations behind foundation support for journalism. While enhancing trustworthy news and combating misinformation are primary drivers, there is less focus on the safety and security of journalists. In this session, we heard from several funders about their motivations and discussed the urgent need for our sector to prioritize the safety and protection of journalists.
