I have been fighting fungus gnats for a while now and I took all of my in door plants outside on my patio and ran a peroxide and water mix through them allowed the soil to dry. It did cur down on the amount of f.gnats, after 3 weeks I mixed peppermint water and dish soap in a gallon jug and followed the same steps as I did with the peroxide and from there I spray the top of the soil with the same peppermint concoction and I have basically no f.gnats. Now it is also winter in NJ, so we'll see how it goes in the spring and summer đł

I'm loving the plant tips, but beware of letting vining pothos grow on your wall (even with those plastic hooks). My aunt had one of those vines and it grew for years all up to her ceiling and along the whole living room, and it looked amazing. But when she decided to pull it all down, she found that the walls were damaged everywhere the plant had put out aerial roots. They are very powerful roots and had dug into the sheetrock, leaving holes cracks when she removed the plant.
Jeez that's a nightmare. Thanks for the heads up!
@@SheffieldMadePlants Mine has started to put out dark roots that are now attached to my wall... Im sure when I come to remove the plant I will have to filler in the holes it leaves...
@@LondonStockholm yeah no real biggie đ
It's crazy how strong they are. My pothos started growing roots into our bookshelf. I had to actually pull it out. Wish I knew this before. Time to prune it I guess
Exactly! As noted by another, even w/o the hooks, certain plants that grow quickly & can use roots aggressively willâŠ.pothos is a fabulous exampleâŠ.I was always surprised when long branches reached the ground when summering outside, the second the ground was detected, that particular stem seems to triple, or more, itâs growth rate~once rooting into the ground rather deeply & scampering across over 6â when away 2.5 weeks, but Iâve now had a Cebu & Jessenia that were hanging partially in the window & slightly behind the wall (different rooms) start climbing the wall on their own. Also had a monstera adansonii hanging in the window, but admittedly ridiculously overgrown & at the bottom of my priority list, root into the corner of the window & begin climbing vigorously~still unsure how it rooted so strongly to the plastic trim!?!?! I have guided a few others across spaces but opt for the twist clips because they have a larger diameter that allows the branch to hang a bit away from the wall vs the ones in the video that hold it so closely.
I have found that powdered cinnamon is really effective with jeeping fungus nats away! Thank you for your videos I always appreciate watching plant videos!

That's a neat trick with the water conditioner, I might need to give that a try for my weekly watering. I keep both houseplants and aquariums, so I repurpose the dirty water from water changes once a month for my plants, so free fertilizer!
Also I start a lot of my cuttings directly in my aquariums, it gives them a turbo boost. The hobbies overlap very nicely đ

I just got back into growing house plants after my last cat crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The only plant that had left from my move from Maryland to Montana more than6 years ago was a huge aloe plant. So I went to a local nursery bought several spider plants (both green and varigated, A peace look that had green blooms, and a snake plant. After watching your video on tap water causung leaf issues, I went back to find the tap water conditioner. They didn't sell ir, but the head horticulturalist recommended that I check with a pet store that sold aquarium supplies for the API water conditioner. So I checked and my local PetSmart had what I was looking for. An 8 oz bottle was $10. I prepared some and gave everyone a healthy drink. Thanks for your advice.

I have found that the best way to get rid of those little nits is to place 1/4 - 1/3 of an inch of sterilized sand over the top of the soil. The nits are not strong enough get through the sand and die. But you can still water the plant because the water will go through the sand. This has been a major help to me.
Thank you for the tip. I've heard good things about that đ
How and where do you get sterilized sand?
@@lindanguyen3169 You can bake the sand in your oven to sterilize it.
This question really doesn't have much to do with hacks but I definitely need your input! I recently saw a commercial advertising a product that apparently turns not just food waste but PLASTIC into a "safe mulch for plants". Its electric, you put it on your counter, hit a button and out comes this beautiful mulch! Now..common sense tells me that the plastic would harm the plants. What do you think? Thank you!!
I think I know the product you're talking about. I don't know much about it but if they say it's good as a mulch then I would go for it.

I keep butterworts and they trap all the fungus gnat adults. The species P moranensis is super easy to grow. There is still a very small gnat population in my calathea zebrina pot that i should take care of.
Also, I have always wondered why ppl never use rooting hormone for water prop. I decided to try it with my micans cuttings. Just mixed a little powder into the vase they are rooting in. Fingers crossed.

Check out Sodium Thiosulphate as a dechlorinator, I have been using this in aquariums for years and is well known within the trade. You can make gallons of dechlorinated water for a fraction of the cost of the expensive branded ones. Having aquariums I use water out of those for watering my plants. Love your videos, thanks for sharing.
Nice, thanks for the tip đ
I always use my aquarium water conditioner when I use tapwater for my plants, I also use the water out of my tank to fertilize

I waged war on the fungus gnats for over a year before finally eradicating them completely. I tried the peroxide first, then the sticky traps, then watering less often and then mosquito dunks before moving on to mosquito bits in every weekly watering. Nothing worked until I realized that the tap water was probably killing the bacteria in the bits. I started adding seachem prime to the water plus sticky traps and the gnats were gone within a month. Also read a tip somewhere about putting a garlic clove in the soil but never tried it.
Nice tips thanks
Oh I actually put in garlic cloves in my bigger pots that were infested. When I was working in the ecological farm my boss told me that she would always plant garlic in the bed of the greenhouse to promote soil health, I am not sure if she also said it was antibacterial but definitely anti fungal..
I kinda did it mostly because I had repotted my tomatoes from a small pot to a 15L pot which was obviously too much and the soil would stay wet for far longer especially now that it's winter.... making it a breeding ground for gnats... and i figured I'd just add them so their roots would absorb the water where the tomatoes wouldn't reach and give the gnats something else to munch on..
Then i remembered what my boss had told me! So it was the right call. I have also noticed that the gnats had been spreading mold spores and killing some of my younger plants.
Its too early to tell if it helped with the gnats, but it definitely helped regulate the moisture in the soil and I haven't seen any signs of any fungal infections in the pots with the garlic... (then again i also had added cinnamon to fight against that)
Iâve tried a mix of a little water, some white vinegar and washing up liquid in a wee bowl and it catches loads of them!
i am really big fan of your channel, i almost watch twice all of your videos. Everyday first i check, if there is a new shorts or video. Please make many more of it:) Love from a country called Turkey.

I've won the war on fungus gnats. I bought several Katchy Indoor Insect traps. Since I've started using them, I don't have gnats flying up my nose anymore. lol I haven't had a fungus gnat issue for a couple of years now. Firm believer in them.
They're good at catching the adults. Some of them caked in flies!
I slowly switched my plants to about 90% lechuza PON with the remainder in soiless substrate and virtually eliminated them after a four year battle.
Having them taking a morning đ dip in my first coffee âïž was just to much after awhile. I lost a few plants that didn't like the change to PON but it was well worth it!
I need to try that
@Sheffield Made Plants I cost about $500 Canadian for me to do it but at that point I only had about 60 plants. I try at the best of times keeping my collection under 70 đȘŽ. I've found that I can take care of them(watering, pests) at about 60 plants in our small apartment.
Keeping your plants from touching each other also really helps I've found after having plants for the past 30 years.

I donât subscribe to many plant pages, but I enjoy yours & appreciate your enthusiasm for learning from comments while also creating content you KNOW works regardless of popular opinion! Someone already pointed out what happens w cuttings from newer snake plant varieties~they produce the parent plant theyâre derived from~you can find a chart of what different varieties will revert to online, & I replied to another comment about plants rooting into walls & twist hooks, but the biggie is those fungus gnats, which you can actually easily get rid of permanently w/o using only waterâŠ..because when you have as many plants as I do, changing water regularly is hard enough w cuttings, but Iâd still be working thru my jungle when it was time to start over so Iâd never finish! That compost youâre using is the reason for them~same as the store bought potting soils. You can go âsoillessâ by using other substrate. Just caught your video about breaking rules, & not entirely sure which âbarkâ you were referring to, but coco husk chips are key, & unquestionably worth it. After several of my aroids were thriving in a mix I created a few years ago (before it became the rage), I slowly began converting ALL my plants of every sort, just altering ratios according to needs. Coco husk is the base~originally used a bit of coir also but phased it out completely~perlite was the next main component, almost 1:1, but itâs split w pumice now because of the mineral benefit, using 2 sizes of both. (General Pumice Products is a fabulous family owned mine that sells 3 sizes, which I use all of in some way but mainly the mid w a bit of large in this mix) I use regular size perlite in large quantity, but for aroids especially, & a few others, use large, size 3, also (a blend of the 2 are also hands down the BEST rooting substrate for every plant imaginable~& Iâve tried it all!!!~though I use a mix of perlite & moss for a few things & the coca alone works well too) next is worm castings, which were always added but w similar make up to coir, just increased it a bit as coir was left out, & then a bit of hort charcoal. Didnât think leca really helped, as others do, in the mix for more water retention needing plants~actually donât use it for much anymore at all, except a layer in the bottom if no hole~so occasionally add a bit of moss if needed. Thatâs pretty much itâŠ.just a few components that are all inexpensive, esp compared to pon!?!? Husk, perlite, pumice, castings, & charcoalâŠ.though w/o pumice works equally well too. I mix huge amounts at a time so canât say exact ratios, just eyeball it, but the plants are much happier, growing more thru winter than before, havenât seen a gnat in 3+ years, & never worry about overwatering. I have added some other things at times, like zeolite, dolomite, etc, or crushed crab & lobster shells for Hoya, but itâs a lot to keep on hand consistently so just add in randomly. I did find a hemp soil amendment last summer Iâm excited about (hemp pak), which retains water better than coir, w tremendous nutrient benefits to boot, but got pitifully behind repotting my personal plants so a lot more are about to utilize it as Iâm diving into starting that process now w my 1st Hoya flowering already & temps 70-80, hopefully getting thru most before itâs regularly 90+ in a month or so, so Iâll have a better idea of itâs affect this growing season. Idk if you can get LiquiDirt products there, but if you can, & decide to try coco husk, they started selling them a year or so ago & definitely the best consistently available~Iâve bought from all over the world but size is wrong or not consistent & availability unreliable while most other expanding bricks, like pet store offerings, are inferior at best. My original source began making the mix for a similar popular company/product so got too busy for outside sells, but had an equally great quality so you may be able to find something else easily there. Itâs definitely worth at least trying for a plant or two & see the difference for yourself!
Awesome thanks for all the tips. Didnât know you could use lobster shells in soil!
Out of everything in that comment, you managed to find the one thing you probably shouldn't do. Just make compost.
Once I started mixing mosquito bits or a systemic into my soil, there has been no fungus gnat in my home. Also, just keeping the soilâs surface dry so thereâs no fungus.
Spot on đ
J.....Yes, when I bring home a new plant I always do a systemic cleanse into my soil as well. Ditto, on keeping the soil dry as well. I do not have fungus knats!
Is that an Elho watering can I see? I love Elho! Also I won against the fungus gnats by watering every single plant with nematodes, it worked wonderfully. I suspect there are fungus gnats in the potting mix I bought last year so I might try to sterilise it in the oven because there's not too much left of it. There were many great hacks in this video. Is the homemade fertilizer already diluted or do you need to dilute it?
Thanks Amy. I'd love to try nematodes on my plants! Yes it's dilute already

I am getting brown tips on my Yucca Elephantipes and my Dracaena Fragans. I've been attentive to their respective lighting preferences and I've be very careful with my watering routine. So I believe I have narrowed it down to chemicals in the tap water. I haven't been giving fertilizer yet because I bought them a few months ago at the beginning of winter and wanted to wait for more consistent spring/summer weather. That said I do live in California where we are always prone to good weather. In fact, my Dracaena Fragans has grown quite a bit. I have just purchased API Stress Coat and the Organic Indoor houseplant food through the affiliate link. I was wondering if there might be any reason not to combine these two chemicals? In other words, when I do give the plants the fertilizer, is there any reason not to also mix in the API Stress Coat?

Great iedea for the water cleaner. But I for one have a big problem from tap water being extemly calcarous. My only solution so far is to filter it thro "Britta" waterfilters, however it is far than enough to soften the water to get somewhat of soft as rain water. Sadly, since I have no garden I can't get rainwater. Any ideas on that problem?
Another solution so far I got, I think even through this channel was cinnamon pulver against bacteria. But I recently found out, it does not help against mold. Which I gained again on top earth layer of the earth for my plants.
Hmm Iâm not sure about calcium in water. What about distilled water? Mold on top of the soil suggests there is dead matter on the soil which is wet
I run a greenhouse. Our solution to help with mold is a mixture of vermiculite and cinnamon. And we sprinkle it on the tops of our plants, seedlings. We also run dehumidifiers, the water from the dehumidifiers are gold for plants. So if you run a dehumidifier don't just throw that water away.
@@becauseiamawezome I do that đ
@@becauseiamawezome Thanks, that I'll try. SO basically using cinamon was not a bad idea. Vermiculite I have to look up where to find it in german stores. But As I use chemical dehumidifiers, I do not really want to use the chemical embued water for my plants, ...or do you think this would not kill them?
@@Hydracat404 if you can find perlite, vermiculite won't be far behind. They have very different uses though. Yeah I'll be leery about adding chemical dehumidifier water to your plant. I went 2 full years without fungus gnats. Now the war has been raging on for about a year, though the enemy is reduced to small guerrilla factions that only resurge every few months đ
Liking the analogy đ
Getting rid of fungus gnats is really easy. All you need is Mosquito Bits. Mixing some into the soil when planting/repotting stops the problem before it starts. For existing plantings with an infestation, sprinkle them on top of the soil and/or make a âteaâ to water the problem plant(s) with. Itâll take a couple weeks to a month, but it will eradicate the gnat problem and keep it gone.

I only had about 16 plants & was so fed up w/ fungus gnats, that I went down to about 12 plants & put them in water for a few months. It didnât help. Iâm thinking itâs due to my location. I have about 25 indoor plants and 30 outdoors
Iâm currently experimenting with tanlin drops. Not sure how itâs going yet
@@SheffieldMadePlants someone recommended nematodes and put layer sand on top of soil
Thank you for this video. đ
Anybody who have a link for the plastic hooks, pls? đ
It's in my amazon store, linked in the description
@@SheffieldMadePlants Ah thank you so much. đ The idea with these hooks is sooo amazing. Love it. đ€
hello,i am getting ready to repot my airoids into a chunkey mix,do I still bottom water?thank you
I do
thank you@@SheffieldMadePlants
If you HAVE an aquarium, you can water with tank water from water changes. It will be dechlorinated.
Good shout đ
Mine actually have rotted in water. Even cuttings that have started in water. They did great all spring and summer, then when fall hit they started rotting. Even with having plenty of light and oxygen in the water (even used an air bubbler)
Hmm thatâs odd. What was the plant?
@@SheffieldMadePlants it happened to a few of them. Pothos, monstera deliciosa and tetrasperma
Wow loved this video. Loved the clear hooks idea. I get so frustrated when my plants grow past the poles. Also re the aloe vera gel! Brilliant. â€đȘŽ
Thank you Glen đ
@@SheffieldMadePlants hi just an update. Hooks!! Done â . My plants look so good đ. Really really pleased. So, thank you again.
@@glen4075 Awesome!
Hi. I'm going to get the Stress Coat+ as you suggested, but it says 1 tsp to 10 gallons. So I guess that's 1/10 of a tsp for my gallon jug? Can't find a measuring spoon for 1/10 tsp and a 10 or even a 5 gallon vessel is not an option. Suggestions? đ€
Get a pipette and are a couple of drops
đ
Hmm. Think I'll try an eyedropper.
Will a self watering pot work for a calathea and how do u make a leaf uncurl?
Thatâll work. Curled leaf normally means lack of water
Thank u for the advice. I have two calathea and one is a baby plant Iâm trying to save
I wonder if the alocacia is also be able to let grow in peddles and water?
I've not tried it yet. I'd have a Google and see if it can grow hydroponically first đ
i found a hack to keep your plants in a south facing window. get a big leaf plant that likes bright light and blocks sunlight under the leaves, i keep my calatheas and other plants do fine here and are always shaded.
Thanks. What plant do you use as cover?
@@SheffieldMadePlants I use a majesty palm, they love bright light and can take 7 hours of direct light.
Do u think coffee water can cause fungus. I think i noticed fungus ( white web looking thing) . On the top layer
Possibly but I would guess itâs more about the top always being wet
Hi, ik heb boven mijn aquarium tegen de muur hydroponic planten, ze krijgen water uit het aquarium via een pompje nu vroeg ik me af of de voeding uit het aquarium genoeg is voor deze planten.
Hi, I have hydroponic plants above my aquarium against the wall, they get water from the aquarium via a pump now I was wondering if the nutrition from the aquarium is enough for these plants.
Itâs good but you still need to feed your plants
hiii! What type of tea do you use?
Any is good. I used peppermint in the video
My philodendron birkin is putting a bunch of small new green only leaves what could be the issue please? I repot it from 2 months ago to a slightly bigger one it was root bound
A lack of adequate light normally. Iâd cut the all green leaves out
@@SheffieldMadePlants thanks yeah i think you'r right but unfortunately im putting it the brighter spot but here now we are having much stormy dark winter days
Glad I was ahead of the game with the water conditioner đ killed two spider plants with my tap water and had water conditioner on hand and it fixed the problem! đ
đŻ
what kind of tea is best?
You can use any really. I used peppermint
You forgot to mention that snake plant takes really really long time than any usual plant to grow roots. I am on my 3rd month and I have seen a tiny bit of roots on all my cuttings. This plant teaches of PATIENCE. đ
Yea they sure do đ
Watching before the pet shops open. Auhhhh!
đ
Is there any credence to the idea that cutting off trailing stems (pothos, cordatums, etc) keeps the plant fuller, promotes more growth in the center to make it bushier?
Yes it does. Cut a stem and 2 news shoots grow from that point
@@SheffieldMadePlants really? I haven't noticed that w my pothos ik w tradescantia and my succulent branch but not my pothos
@@KimPlantsArt absolutely
@@SheffieldMadePlants dang. Ok. I'll have to try that again once my pothos recovers. (it took a nasty crash while I was away on vacation)
My plants thank you!
Any time!
what are your thoughts on keeping plants with the same needs in the same pot? I researched and it said you can. what do you think?
Different plants on the same pot? Thatâs fine and can look nice
@@SheffieldMadePlants My mom do that all the time. Just make sure if the plants in that same pot aren't thriving, u may need to repot it separately to let them recover.
I like some of your suggestions albeit much of your advice seem kind of silly... however the pictures of the monstera plants and how one can become like the other is probably unlikely as they are two different types of monstera plants...
How do I use the water conditioner?
A drop or 2 in the watering can with the water and you're good to go
I use a drop of honey as a substitute for root hormone.
That works đđ
