Try Gainsborough, my town. It has a Tudor half-timbered Manor House in the town center. It the biggest Manor House that has been in continual use since it was built in 1478. Henry Vlll met his last wife there, Catherine Parr. It has been visited by other royalty over the centuries too, as well as other welknown people. Two minutes away is the parish church. It was built on the foundations of a former church where Alfred the Great married his wife Elswitha of the Gainas Tribe.
You have the River Trent a stones throw away from the Old Hall too, with a purpose built path along the river up to Trent Bridge that goes past all the old waves, and a fair few building turned into exclusive flats. There is a stunning walk from the Trent Bridge along the bank where you can walk past West Burton Power Station.
Back in the town, there is the Heritage Center which chronicles the history of the town which is absolutely fascinating. I was born there, but had to move 10 years ago for work.

I always come back to this place. I was last there in April. It was blowing a hoolie on top of Mam Tor, it nearly blew me off my feet but it was a stunning view.

That brought back some memories! Back in college days, whole group of us walked over Mam Tor, starting at Castleton. Wouldn't have been a student thing if we missed a pub call at the beginning, or at the completion.
