    💥💥 4:24 I just did an estimate 3 weeks ago for a man whose posts were all 6 inches below grade and all are rotting. Footings always stick out of the ground by an inch or two. The deck is 23 years old and everything else is otherwise still in good shape. I’ve built decks for over 30 years and I have not been able to come up with a solution on how to rectify such an easily avoidable mess. ⚒

    That's a good looking deck!
    With my parting boards, I like to point them into my border rather than running them in square, just a preference I guess but I think it looks better.
    *I went to the Trex factory in Seattle and took a class on how to heat and bend their composite decking.
    We heated the boards with an electric heating pad (made specifically for heating boards) that was sandwich between two pieces of insulation. Once the boards hit the internal temperature we were looking for, we had a jig set up in the shop that we bent them around.
    It was easy peasey. Next time were going to skip doing it in the shop and heat them right there on there job site.

    It looks fantastic. It seems for you installing the picture frame outer boards last was easier. That makes sense although I see many installing at least 2 sides of the border first.

    Great step by step. Thank you! Struggling with the idea of those posts just backfilled with dirt. In my head I was thinking they would need to be concreted in or use concrete blocks/footings. Talk me off the ledge here...

    • @KomarProject
      @KomarProject  Před 4 lety +1

      It all depends on the codes in your town. Where I live all we need is concrete frost footings. And with them going in so deep they will never move. It again if your in a warm climate your not going as deep so you may have to do concrete Pillars. Call your local build Dept and they will tell you beat way to go

    • @wayneosaur
      @wayneosaur Před 2 lety

      This would rot in the moist climate I live in-- any wood that touches dirt will not last. In fact you don't even want the post to touch the concrete. You have a metal plate that is attached to a bolt embedded in the concrete. The wood then sits on the metal plate.

    I built our deck with that composite or fake wood, it looks awesome. That is until it rained, it was so slippery that you couldn't walk on it as normal. THEN it get HOT..HOT..HOT. lost the ability to walk out on the deck barefoot. So we ripped up the fake wood and made a nice and rather large dog house. We then rebuilt the deck from real wood. So so much better. I think that fake wood is more suited for a commercial application than as a residential deck. Not to mention, I can stain the real wood deck the shade we wanted and not what is provided.

    This video is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Like exactly. We moved into a house with a half finished deck. Thanks for posting. Personally I’m a little more old school and rather mount beams on top of posts or notch the post so beams set inside of posts, but I kind of inherited a deck with similar setup only they used FastenMaster (similar to Simpson Strong Ties). I just don’t trust the technology to hold the weight of the joists, the beams, and any other environmental variables. Am I paranoid? Does anyone else share this sentiment? Lol

    • @KomarProject
      @KomarProject  Před 4 lety

      You’re totally right it’s better to set the joists on the posts or notched posts but fasteners like this will hold them just fine. I know a lot of people will argue that point but I have built a lot of decks over the years with building inspections to follow and they have all passed. If you’re worried just attach some two by fours under the joists at the posts and glue them in the place with fasteners and it will hold better then notching the posts. A glue bond is actually stronger then a piece of wood. Hope that helps and good luck.

    • @familyguy5081
      @familyguy5081 Před 4 lety

      Komar Project interesting thanks, I may give that a try. I found some Simpson Ties here www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-Strong-Tie-DJT-14-Gauge-ZMAX-Galvanized-Deck-Joist-Tie-for-2x-Nominal-Lumber-DJT14Z/100374978
      These seemed like they could also work. But I also like going the cheaper route because I have plenty of 2x laying around. Were you thinking mount them vertically or horizontally directly under the joist with some wood glue and fasteners (maybe the FastenMasters) or other screw hardware?

    • @beachbum213
      @beachbum213 Před 4 lety

      Our building codes here you would have to use 6x6 and it would have to be notched. that is the only way to distribute the weight down the pole into the concrete properly. The deck you made it looks great though.

    I have a few questions.
    1. At 11:05 you started the bracing for the outside and middle of the frame. On the outside, did you run an additional joist shorter than 16" from the outside or did you just block in and keep the spacing at 16"?
    2. When doing the border and steps, you overhang the Trex just about an inch. I saw how you did the angled corners and pre-drilled and the screws show, but how did you hide the rest of the screws through the length of the board? The overhang would make it so you couldn't use your little tool.

      I’m not exactly sure what your asking brother but I used blocking every 16” in the middle because I had a different color transition piece going there. And on the stairs again 16”. As for the mitered corners I drove that screw just below the decking off camera. Before we sold the house I made my own plugs out of the decking boards and plugged them like the facia. They didn’t sell my color plugs so if your looking to do composite decking keep that in Mind. Hope that helps you.

    A trapezoid also has equal length diagonals. You should probably also confirm that opposite sides are equal in length to one another to make sure you have a perfect square. Or maybe easier yet, verify that any one of the angles is 90 degrees.

    Great professionals and a great deck...what are you using to spray the Joists?
    TIA.

    Great looking deck! If you can afford composite it’s definitely nice to have. I just hate how they say you don’t need to power wash the deck still. Coming from first hand experience, please clean any deck, it looks so much better 😂
