    i remember in like elementary school we had an assignment to make an essay on an animal. so i chose manta rays. but all i knew was this one boss from sunshine. but i also didnt know the name so i wrote praying mantis ray. when i asked my teacher for any help, she gave me praying mantis facts to add to my essay which confused me. so praying mantis rays are paper thin ghosts with electricity that live on trees and use claws to hunt. that confused me for years until i properly learned about the two animals.

    My theory as to why most enemies in this game look so weird is that they are actually drawings by Bowser Jr./Shadow Mario. They look like how a child would possibly draw classic Mario enemies, and it would also explain how some of them explode in goop when defeated. That would also explain the blue coin graffiti in the casino that's just in mission 5, because Bowser Jr. was just there to create that version of King Boo, and that's when he smeared the M on the wall as well

    • @BaronSterling
      @BaronSterling Před 29 dny +8

      I always liked to believe that the enemies were so different because they were exotic, tropical subspecies of the classic enemies that are unique to Isle Delfino. I always referred to these specific variants as "Delfino Bloopers, Delfino Boos" and whatnot because of that.

    The roulette actually only lands on the coins a few times. After that, you have to grind off the electric koopas and bloopers if you want a 999 score. Interestingly, once you reach a few hundred, the coins that spawn from defeating enemies become invisible. No idea why, but I went through the hassle of getting max score before and it was a nightmare due to this fact

    The sms speedrunning community recently figured out the episode 6 goop completion conundrum. It turns out the requirement for all versions (even JP 1.0 vs 1.1) have the same percent of goop you need to clean to finish the level.
    However, in JP 1.0, when water is sprayed on goop, the goop visually disappearing doesn’t perfectly coordinate with the goop removed from the goop maps. Visually, a little more goop goes away in this version than in others. This can create ‘invisible goop’ or goop still on the goop map but without texture. This lead players to think the percentage of goop cleaned needed to be higher, when in reality it is the same percent, you just might not be able to see it all.

    Something I just realized is how weird it is that King Boo looks so different. A lot of enemies look different in Sunshine, with the understanding being that this is an exotic island instead of the Mushroom Kingdom, so things look different here. That can explain most of the differing appearances, except for King Boo, as he is a specific character, not merely a category. Now that I think about it, how and why did King Boo even get to Isle Delfino in the first place?
    ... wait a second, I just looked it up, and he wasn't actually supposed to be King Boo, that was just how his name was localized; in the original Japanese version, he was just a "Big Boo". And I guess that canonically this false king is supposed to be made of paint from Bowser Jr.; so, mystery solved.

  • @Robbie_Haruna
    @Robbie_Haruna Před 2 měsíci +9

    I think the really interesting thing about the Scrubbing Sirena Beach cleaning requirement seemingly being closer to 1% is that we know for a fact that 3D All Stars isn't based on the 1.0 Japanese release.
    That release had a game crash if you spawned the 100 Coin Shine in the tall grass secret level, (something fixed in all releases after that,) but more notably every version of Sunshine on the GameCube except the PAL release had a broken NPC spawn in Delfino Plaza, where when Shadow Mario's ship is waiting by the cannon before unlocking Pinna Park, the Yellow Toad would spawn below the map by mistake and be rendered impossible to see or talk to without using glitches in that state of the Plaza.
    So this just makes the seemingly more strict cleaning requirement being in 3D All Stars all the more confusing, because everything else is clearly taking from the most up to date version (the PAL GameCube release.)

    • @nullTitle
      @nullTitle Před 2 měsíci +7

      I'm wondering if cleaning up "X% of all goop" doesn't accurately measure the goop by total surface area. Like, does it sub-divide the landscape into boxes, and cleaning up X% of goop in each box counts? Are there specific spots that have to be cleaned 100%, and other spots that aren't measured at all? These would allow for differences in the amount of goop on the screen depending on where the leftover goop is.
      I also wouldn't be surprised if there was a floating point error, or some bug in how they calculate remaining goop. Does it subtract from a variable as you clean goop, or does it recalculate dynamically based on the goop remaining? In the first case, maybe they have inaccurate values assigned to patches of different sizes, so cleaning up a large patch in fewer direct sprays could have a different value than using indirect sprays and leaving tiny leftover patches. In the second case, the calculation could have rounding errors, like making smaller patches round up to cover more area.
      Honestly , I think there's too much room for error in the methods used in this video for us to make any firm conclusions. I'd be interested to see a tool-assisted run across all the versions/releases, just to figure out the completion triggers when using identical inputs.

    Splatoon's Mario references are likely in part because Splatoon was almost a Mario spinoff game! The devs had a looot of trouble figuring out characters that would make sense with the gameplay (early builds had placeholder "tofu blocks" that originated the concept of blending into your ink; they tried rabbits for a bit but couldn't figure out a way to justify rabbits having paintfights), so it was decided that, if they couldn't nail down a good concept, they'd just use Mario characters. Fortunately, they eventually went for squids, but it's interesting to imagine what that could've looked like.

    • @1snivy10
      @1snivy10 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Wasn't one of the Mario spinoffs like that? Maybe it was Mario Kart, they weren't sure what characters to put in their kart racer, so used Mario characters as a placeholder or something and then liked the result.
      Or maybe I'm thinking of Pokemon Snap, which I know for sure was originally not about Pokemon.

    26:40 I don't believe the Noki in the open room is named Linguine. I think the Noki that says linguine is using it in place of an expletive. The reason I think this is because in his dialogue box the word linguine isn't capitalized like a proper noun, i.e. someone's name should be. If you replace linguine with something equally silly like "fiddlesticks" the sentence still checks out.

    I like how Big Man’s boss fight in Splatoon 3 is a reference to Phantamanta. Nice touch and Easter egg Nintendo. And considering I grew up with Super Mario Sunshine, but didn’t fight Phantamanta until Super Mario 3D All-Stars, it was a bit of nice nostalgia for me to see the Phantamanta reference in Splatoon 3.

I’ve watched so many vids about Sunshine over the years, thought I knew everything there was to know, but this series has taught me so much I’ve never heard before! I really love the attention to all the little details like the posters, regional differences, and character dialogue 🙏 can’t wait for the next!!

    I appreciate these videos a ton. I think I've gotten 100% in this game 30+ times at this point, and I'm still learning a ton more to appreciate about this game through these videos.
    Also, I recently played the Japanese 1.0 version of this game, and the goop requirement is definitely much tighter than the American version. Like, I actually forgot it's tighter until I noticed it, myself.

But I just love all the little details in this game and it’s so cool to see a community of people who feel the same!! And the haunted hotel puzzle was my favourite stage too haha, figuring out I can jump through the bathroom made me feel so smart. I can’t wait until you cover the other levels! I remember being genuinely being stressed out by the manta level. I was stressed not only the considerably higher difficulty but I was also actually frightened by the giant manta. The manta and eely were both considerably scary for a game meant for kids.

    Hey man I just wanted to thank you for making this series, sunshine is one of my favourite games and I spent hours playing it in my childhood so seeing that it still have some relevance nowadays is amazing. Everything from the comedy, curiosity and genuity to the editing, pacing and music (I got that Celeste reference) from your videos is extremely full of personality and originality. Again, thank you a lot.

    I honestly can’t tell you how happy I’d be if you did videos like this for Mario 64, Galaxy, Odyssey, or Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask, BotW/TotK, or hell, even Goldebeye/Perfect Dark, the old God of War games, Final Fantasy VII, or honestly any game.
    These are so addictive and fun to watch! Love your style. I could imagine you exploring so many great game worlds.

    Fun Fact: the Bluster wind ghost enemies can actually be dispelled by spraying them with water before they attack you.
    Did you know: inside the West bell tower (the one above the jail room) in Delfino Plaza, there is a Rocket Nozzle box, and it reflects the status of the main one by the other 2 near the fountain? (You can see it from the rooftop next to the West tower with the banana, line up so the Banana is between you and the Tower, press up against the railing, use the L button (strafe) to force the camera into the tower, pull the camera almost all the way back, and there it is.

    45:04 This is a part of 10回クイズ(jukkai-kuizu, "say-ten-times quiz") in Japan. It's in the following format:
    出題者:「ピザ」って早口で10回言って
    > Contestant: Try saying "pizza" ten times fast.
    解答者:ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ、ピザ
    > Respondent: Pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza.
    出題者:(自分のひじを指して)ここを何と言う?
    > Contestant: What do you call this part? (pointing to the contestant's own elbow)
    The answer is ひじ(hiji, "elbow"), but the contestant expects the respondent to accidentally answer ひざ(hiza, "knee"), which sounds similar to ピザ(piza, "pizza").
