The only real pieces of advice in this video.
1.Work through out the night till the morning
2.Get everyone out of the studio so you can get the fuck to work
3. Experiment with crazy shit and let them float in your head like an ''Ideas bank'' thing.
4. EDM can be stupidly easy sometimes the only thing that will make you pop out in the crowd would be your melodies, even when you have shitty plugins.
then u weren't listening lol
you forgot to add 3. Experiment freely in order to keep your ideas fresh
Not sleeping destroys your brain which in turn makes your music suffer, keep a good sleep schedule.
@@ricochetsixtyten LOL no one ever said not to sleep, just sleep through the morning although that isnt healthy either but better then no sleep.
This is cardinal sin of EDM
XD

@G House Heretics
"...a* cardinal sin of EDM."
He's super right about the sleep delirium mode. Sometimes I can hear music as if it's playing on a stereo. Full on hallucinations. Amazing.
Dude, I have the same thing! And generally it's music that I've never heard before, almost as if my brain is conjuring up it's own music out of thin air! It's always baffled me and I really want to learn how to document these songs, perhaps by learning notation and theory
Man, I remember how I used to hear melody in spoon crashing on the floor. It was really trippy
@@akshay_creates I get the same thing when I'm super sleep deprived! Grab your phone and sing the melody into it if you're awake enough for it ASAP!
@@thnder1472 Will def try that out! I also have a very basic piano app that I fiddle with to try and get the right notes. But I think humming or singing it would work better
I wake up in the middle of the nights with melodies and I hardly know another way LMAO but my dad used to work until 8 am in the 80's making tracks with a one-second sampler
This dude will be 40 next year (well 37 in this), makes me feel better about approaching 40 (I'll be in 2025), his vibe and energy is inspiring and makes me more at peace with getting older, as cheesy as that sounds.
I love thinking about Steve Duda being like 'I can't believe they flew me over here for this.' he just nods and says some agreeable stuff. pretty great.
Deadmau5 says some funny shit and then Duda makes sense of it in an insightful way. Love them
2:39 this is also true for coding. When Iâm tired, my brain manages to find the most efficient/lazy solution. When fully awake, lots of mental energy is wasted in analyzing and getting distracted lol
ghee4345 so fucking true
I feel the exact same way hacking games, so much of the time during the day is wasted on mediocre things Vs doing it 2am in the morning, I know exactly what to do.
yesterday I cried because I couldn't manage to finish a track I'm working on, it sounded the shittiest. Two hours later, still feeling fucked up, I got a beat done that I had been postergating for weeks. And at night I finished another instrumental track to be released. Seemingly, brain works at its best when feeling at the lowest
its a curse too since you dont know how youve done it. creativity is really a hit or miss
All the best stuff I've ever written was at like 2am when I am trying to sleep

What I got most from this series is, Joel screaming from the roof tops throughout all the episodes "STOP FUCKING TAKING YOURSELF TOO SERIOUS!!". Love his personality - spot on!
I wish Joel would do more stuff like this. It's cool to see this authentic side of him.
he's streamed endless hours just hanging with fans
@@kevinmyrick218 I know I've been around since the begining. There are a few instances of him just talking about how he got his start etc. Very informative, listening to other people's mistakes in general and adapting yourself so you don't go down one rabbit hole and your left with your d*ck in your hands saying damn I wish I hadn't have taken that approach. Learn from someone else's mistakes and in this case take what he's telling you and actually apply it to your own situation. Our hero's are here for us to look up to.

agree
"The thing that actually put me out on top of that s***....was the melodies". This is exactly what brought me into his universe as a 50 year old man. A lot of EDM music didn't make sense to me, but Joel's music speaks.
i dont want a top 10 i dont want to be rich and famous i just want someone just one person to say hey your track to my mind off all the bullshit i been through latley because making music for is taking me away from my stress
TezLo same bro. stay underground, ur music gets shit once u get big its been proven time and time again
Yup always stay true to yourself
Same dude im with you on that, I'll consider myself successful, when I least one of my songs touches someone's heart or to help someone in some way
Joel your correct buddy...(here is your answer to the 4 to 7 am hours to finish a trak). 1 hour before you fall asleep or the first 1hour when you wake up your brain is in the THETA ZONE that zone is the same zone we live in as kids till your about 11 or so (hence the amount of creativity during that time). It also is the same time that you'll be able to absorb the most information making training of anything come together faster. Hope that helps!
I literally produced a fat fucking amount of work once from 9pm to 5am. Your brain essentially just goes into auto pilot and is like alright try this and this and then everything comes together
damn his studio looks like a crazy scientist's lab
I love how mad he is by the end of this series lmao

We need more interviews like this
The delirium I feel when tired makes me create the darkest of sounds, for some strange reason at 4 in morning when my Brain is in fatigue mode I create technođ
Yeah when Im tired I seem to make like dark techno/tech house wacky sound stuff its weird lol
i can relate but in my case i was creating dark beats
Gotta love Deadmau5 for his candour and lack of pomposity. 100% real.
When your brain is tired, the part that filters out crazy ideas is less active, letting those crazy ideas in. That's where great ideas come from.
Steve is so freaking chill!
he's like the opposite of deadmau5 lol
@@lukisnootis5708 haha he sure is!
Deadmau5 is the bestest
No wonder Razer took this down,
Joel seemed like he really didnt want to do that interview, especially at 9:00. Jesus Christ...
IDK about that... According to Joel himself on his appearance at the H3 Podcast, he was totally on board with it (story starts at the 1:03:40 mark). If I had to guess, he was probably booted for the swearing, maybe for focusing on being a self-proclaimed internet hate machine and not focusing on the product so much... maybe, perhaps?
Hell if you want to see Joel at his most apathetic, look for the Omaze video, the apartment tour/chance to meet him video. That one's a real treat xD
I want to hear that ghosts and stuff breakbeat
I've found this czcams.com/video/3mAebT2h8BM/video.html
Me too!! Show us Joel!
the making shit and experiment thing just help a lot in my architecture career
And he's right about the melody bit. Melody is king. If you took 100 producers all same with fidelity and quality, its the music aspect that will get you that extra mile
Rhythm is always king even deaf people will feel it, then comes melody rivaling with bassline and then harmony at 3rd or 4th to buff things up when needed. This is when making music for a non musician public. The melody in edm is blended heavily with rhythm to gain in value, it's rythmic, easy to sing and repetitive.
Thats why Avicii was Huge
@@bencawood for his 3 songs ?
Let's not forget that sound design and even mixing are also critical creative factors in creating EDM that offer a genuinely unique sound and style that is shaped by the artist.
It's all about the melody
I like him
Id love to hear the crazy experimental stuff.

This is the cardinal sin of edm of all time.
This is great!
Brilliant video and just liked and hit your 300
DEADMAU5 IS SO FUCKING CORRECT. That's exactly how I be like right now with my music. Going to bed like 7 a.m. after staring at a screen for 4 or 5 hours.
Raw deadmau5 emotion
Einstein of music, Deadmau5! đ§ĄđđđđđđđLove ya.
He's the new Beethoven, or Beathoven, if you will
Ermmm, no
I'm the same way. I can start at a decent hour working on some music. Motivated and ready to get some shit done and in bed before dawn. I end up doing almost nothing for the entire night til amost sun up. Then (usually by accident) do something I all of a sudden dig and it's 11 am before I go to bed finally. Drives me crazy. I have never heard dead mau5 as a person really talk into detail about anything before today. I have a lot more respect for him. I've always been impressed by all that analog gear he has though.
While I agree with Joel about artists like Martin Garrix half arsing their way to stardom (yet rather ironically I'm always worried that I'm not putting enough time and effort into my music but that's another matter), I also think Duda makes a good point about how there's probably some other artist out there who has more experience than Joel and makes the same rants about deadmau5 as Joel does about artists like Martin Garrix.
Joel's issue is basically with artists who come across as if they're in it for the money and don't care about the quality of their music, artists who would rather take shortcuts than actually put the time and effort into making something incredible, and while I agree with Duda about how there's always going to be someone more experienced who'll rant about those with less experience, I think the ultimate solution is for people to be passionate about the music they make, to care about what it sounds like, and to make it sound the best that they possibly can.
Very honest discussion. Thanks đ
totally agree on the 'sleep deprivation delirium stop analyzing' part, as on many Sundays when I worked as a chef, feeding sometimes 50 to 60 people a la carte by myself and with the help of only a dishwasher, after a night out and with around 4 hours max of sleep, I would get into the most amazing flow. Doing everything near perfect, as you get into some sort of 'auto-pilot-mode' - not thinking anymore, just doing what you do well and have done so many times already.
But I soon as I would start running my mouth, getting friendly and boasting to my guests... I'd almost always burn the food, or myself...
It's called flow! Lot's of science has been done on this
The more tired you are... Or isolated in a cabin in the mountain.. Great music comes together! True story!

Funnily enough the 6-7am thing is the same effect we get as coders.
Basically youre thinking shittier so youre less logical and precise which makes you experiment more.
You can get the same thing by getting a couple drinks in and maintaining a buzz, aka the ballmer peak
I can't express how much I love you Joel.... so I won't ever tell you:)
I know a guy thats been in the dance music industry since the Disco days and he DJ'ed in every major nightclub in his city,
He has been trying to get to a high place in the EDM industry for years. And today he still hasnt made it.......
I feel so bad for him. He even traveled to UK to try his break there for 3 years and nothing. Everyone tells him he is talented but never made it.
Mean while he see's all these other guys (to him they are brand new) and they become this huge monster EDM icons.... and he just gets upset and breaks tv's or put holes in walls.
he watched Hardwell, all the way to Marshmellow and Deadmau5, and he constantly asking himself (WTF?)
Many times many labels told him they cant sign him because his name is not big enough. its like a catch-22 he says.
Now hes breaking 60 years old and depressed, he locked himself in the house because he knows its over, its too late for him and to him he says the industry doesnt want him.
hes been struggling to make it since 19 years old..... Some people just dont make it......... its the sad truth.
That's really sad. But I think it really depends on what you're going for in life.. I have no ambition to 'make it' in the industry. I just 'make it' If somebody enjoys what I do and wants to support me, I appreciate it. If they don't enjoy it, it's not for them. If you go in with the expectation that you're going to be somebody, prepare to have your expectations crushed. If you go into it loving what you do, having fun and being open to sharing, I think you'd be happy regardless if you had 3000 listeners, or 3. The fact that he's envious of other peoples success speaks volumes about his character. And his character probably has more to do with his lack of success than the music he produces.
Obviously, there's a fair bit of luck involved with getting discovered. These days, it requires being on multiple platforms at once, a sort of quantity over quality. It's not enough to just be on soundcloud. You have to be EVERYWHERE for people to take notice. I don't have anything, anywhere (besides the garbage I uploaded when I was 13, uploaded on YT and Newgrounds) and I enjoy every minute I spend producing music. I do it for me. But as the other comment mentioned, maybe he could mentor on CZcams and Twitch, giving other producers tools that may help THEM succeed. In doing so, he may find success of another kind, be it financial or some other measure.
Just my two cents, anyway. I mean no judgement.
Sad and all but donât have to post stuff like that trying to discourage others based off one experience of someone born in a much different time ...Today production matters so much more than Dj experience. Social media platforms opened many doors for all the producers you see headlining today, this is a new era if you make the right tracks and know what labels they fit they will bite guaranteed if the music is good enough. Weâre in an era that many artist/label owners like to find up coming talent to play their tracks themselves that no one else has ever heard. Followers donât matter music quality does I donât care what anyone says if the music is good and it fits I can guarantee you there is no way they wonât take it up. It is so easy to walk up to your favorite dj at the booth of a venue event and hand him or her a usb or cd. You have to be willing to think of it all and do it all and like I said before...your music must reach that standard so production skills are KEY
Post a link to his music would love to give it a listen
This may not be related to music but Jonathan Banks from breaking bad was in his 60s during the show. That show plus better call saul was by far the peak of his career. It isn't over until it's really over. I'd love to hear some of this man's stuff you mentioned
yis
For me it's sleep deprivation or just I'm fucking around so god damn much to the point where I'm like "What even is this?" Where I've made like an entire track in 1 sitting but it was a basic trance track and it sounded ok
Yo that shits real delirium can help at 3 am
yeah, got to love those times when you just stay up till 10 am just vibing, like you know you need to go sleep, but you just don't wanna, but you really do so you're just like yeah whateve :D it's a mystical place, to be honest I think sometimes you just let go some things and ideas just because of the thought - I will sleep, wake up and make it, but the truth is it's not the same vibe. Idk, there's just something about it - a magical place where time disappears and all that shit lol

I think he feels that dance music is stupid because he doesn't consume it anymore as a raver. The music is stupid, for sure. It's not Vivaldi. But it's tailored to sound wonderful on way to loud volume. His hunt to taking his style in music further gives him these feelings about it.
I'm the consumer of old EDM from 2012 and down.
I think deadmau5 has a genuine love for electronic music from the tech aspect. He describes himself more as a tech head rather than a musician, after all.
Because of this, of course he feels dance music is stale. 90% of it all follows a very strict formula/structure so it's near effortless for the DJ to mix.
I definitely wish more electronic producers came at it more from deadmau5's angle of experimentation rather than just making the next one hit wonder club banger.
â@@urphakeandgey6308 Yeah but the productions he is known for are relatively uninteresting. They are pretty basic and they all follow the same exact "deadmau5" formula. Where's the experimentation? Sure, there is "Stuff I Used To Do" but that's not his signature sound.
Complexity does not equal quality. If we follow what you say, then actually all music is stupid.
â@@urphakeandgey6308EDM is extremely broad, I guess you only mean the more mainstream part... If you mean this EDM scene I just mentioned, then I'm more or less okay with that, although don't forget the emerging and established artists who do care about their music; they are not few either.
Deadmau5 says he loves electronic music (as well as business), I don't think his love is limited only to the technical, since I also mention the genre as a whole (which does not only include EDM)... His biggest complaint is in the mainstream.
I find it sad that mainstream EDM is degrading like this, but we can't call it "stupid music" either... :(
Deadmau5 says he dont get high but I think he's high right now. Some type of stimulant
