this is Denison.

Here's some background:
First, I want to say that I am proud every day to be a Denison student.
Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about our campus culture and I wanted to do a tiny tiny part to make it better. So I thought of a thing (with so much help from the majestic NatKP and Meghan) called This is Denison.
I felt that together, as a community, we could own that we can do better.
Even if you feel like you aren’t “a part of the problem” or that I’m “preaching to the choir,” I absolutely believe, as with any campus issue, that we all still have a responsibility - as Denisonians - to be kind, empathetic, and supportive of one another. We don’t always do that.
However, I choose optimism.
I choose to think that we, as a campus, as community members, as humans, have the capacity to do so much better...that we can care for one another and embrace and love our differences.
This is Denison. This is our home. This is not a place for hate. Homophobia. Racism. Misogyny. Sizeism. Classism.
SO, I reached out to people that I think highly of, people who have a stake in this community, to make a statement in the form of a short movie. I recorded them making statements about what we do and don't stand for here on the Hill. In a lot of ways, it is aspirational. I know we don't always embody these statements. But I think owning it as a vision for our campus is a great step.
This super short film won’t totally eradicate the problem, of course.
However, I think it is SO powerful for all of us to come out and say that we don’t tolerate hate...together. Hopefully, this will just be a tiny contribution to a much bigger intentional and empathetic campus conversation and action.
