Is physics, chemistry required for persuing software engineer, as in india we have to study them with maths for getting into engineering colleges by giving exams like iit jee for persuing it?

I'd say the most important moment was around 1:20. Sister's internship for this summer was rescinded. Full time job offers were being rescinded for this year's CS graduating class too, from what I know generally. I do not remember that this ever happened before in that field. Basically CS is going thru a crisis. ChatGPT can write code, and various tech companies are in layoff mode more than hiring mode because of that and because Musk showed that Twitter could be operated with far fewer employees. Don't think others didn't notice that. I would not rely on how things used to be in CS at this time.
I donât think the layoffs are because of chat gpt. Pretty sure itâs because the tech industry experienced a huge boom because of the pandemic and now that the pandemic is over, the market is correcting. I donât think any company is actually using chat gpt to write code
chatgpt ay write code but it cannot write code that is efficient. the CS major teaches you how to not only code, but code well, and how to code each problem and exactly how it works to the systems level. ChatGPT just grabs things from a paper it might have read or something similar to a prompt that you asked for but most of the time it is incorrect. I am in a machine learning internship and I try to use chatGPT to correct some errors I face. It just can't sovle those errors, so I have to research the solutions myself.

Nice video, kinda funny that your job comes down to LeetCode. Just had a question: A lot of people who excel at Math contests go for quant jobs at big trading companies like Jane Street/Jump-Trading/Hudson-River-Trading. Are you any of you two interested in that field. Most of the time a math/physics/cs degree is enough or really just any major that has lots of analytical quantitative problem solving.
I was interested in it for a bit (we both did a lot of math competitions in high school), but I realized it would be too stressful for me, and I have heard the work hours tend to be quite intense. If you are very good at mental/quick math then it might be a good choice, but I feel like I would enjoy a better, more relaxed work/life balance, which is why I stuck with software engineering!
I have been haunting a few military technological sites, and I wonder how pervasive military might is going to be in the next century. Sometimes it strikes me that the matter and energy expended in a single college football game could feel and shelter a whole county in Africa for a month.

I have a little question about the college : Does the company focus more on how the college is like or more on the major this school is (example would be in US News right now the major rank of cs in university of Maryland is higher than that of Harvard, but if I am the employer i might prefer the guy from Harvard ) And how is the cs in UCB, I only heard it ranks so high but what is your idea on that compared the cs major in Caltech
Hi! I think the school most likely plays a role in initial resume screenings. I've heard most of the time it is random though, and honestly, it depends more on your experience. I would assume companies no longer care about your college once you are in the interviewing phases because if you do well in your interviews, they will of course want to hire you. I don't know about how the CS in UCB is, but I think Caltech's CS major is probably one of the most theoretical when compared to other colleges.

@@bowencao7216 Of course! Many companies are interested in Caltech because of its prestige, so we have a lot of career fairs geared toward CS students where big (and small) companies recruit. I did not attend that many on-campus career fairs, so I just got my internships by applying online! I will say though, Caltech does provide many other opportunities such as sponsoring you to attend conferences, and I have heard those are incredibly helpful in helping you land an internship right away.
@@bowencao7216 Hi Bowen, so sorry for the late response! I just saw this. You definitely have plenty of research opportunities. Most people, especially freshmen, try doing research at least once during their Caltech career, and several are able to publish papers. You can also play a sport here if you are interested because they aren't super competitive. Many big (and smaller like startup) companies will come for career fairs. Because Caltech has such a big name and the undergraduate population is small, these companies heavily recruit here and you have plenty of opportunities. Caltech also provides funding for you to attend conferences across the US to talk to more companies and get an internship! For this internship, I did not attend any of these, though I probably should have utilized the resources they offer more.
Silicon Valley companies pay employees very well besides free housing & meals but the downside is that the work might be very complicated, tedious, and daunting in addition to a "karoshi" culture of over 60 hours/week, I suppose? However, I think that the BS Applied Computational Mathematics from Caltech is probably the best bet because it fits more with Quantitative Researchers & Traders at hedge fund companies that pay even more than any jobs at SV? IDK but that's my best guess!
Actually, I've heard the work hours are extremely chill, especially at big tech companies! One of my friends at a Silicon Valley company (new grad) said they work only 4 hours a day, and they get half of their Fridays off. I also feel like the work isn't that daunting (though still challenging) compared to some other jobs once you get used to the codebase and know what you are working on. You are right, the ACM major here is probably very useful to get trading positions, but I do know of a lot of people who aren't in that major; instead, they are physics and cs majors!

Hi, Angel (Amy's sister), I did dream of going to either Caltech or MIT in my younger days. Caltech was more attractive due to a more personal environment of less than 1,000 undergraduates but academically too demanding & stressful. MIT was more reasonable but too large & impersonal with about 5,000 undergraduates. I ended up going to neither school because of my deafness & extreme laziness. Now, I think that Harvey Mudd would be about just right between Caltech & MIT but the CS program there is truly outstanding since the average starting salary of a BS in CS from HM is roughly an incredible $120,000/year whereas a BA or BS degree from most other colleges or universities across America would get you around $25,000/year give or take $5,000!
@@suthiraphanassarat8669 Hi! Hm, $25,000 is very surprising to me. I would expect it to be at least $100,000 given the high demand for software engineering and advancements in technology. I would say that in the end, Caltech, MIT, and Harvey Mudd all produce great software engineers, and it doesn't make that big of a difference as long as the school has a decent CS program.

I meant average starting salary of BA/BS degrees in all majors from colleges & universities all over the US. Those with CS majors are considerably much higher than other subjects like English, history, psychology, etc.

So biggest questions i have for cs are as follows:
1. I have done many personal projects with cs but no actual competitions is it worth indicating a cs major on my apocations?
2. How easy is it to switch i to a cs major in caltech if youre in another engineering field?
3. I am very proficient with advanced mathematics, and i know you kept referncing the theory based stuff at caltech. Just how advanced math does caltech comp sci take your math education? Like do yall go up past complex analysis, differential geometry, etc? Or just stop with set theory/algebraic topology?
4. How do you maintain a healthy lofestyle whole workong in cs? I myself have struggled a lot wih balancing my work/life, and can sometimes spend 13-16 hours on a day wasting away in front of my computer trying to grapple with whatever problem im trying to work on. Was wondering how much activity do you feel workplaces support their developers in, and how you uave built healthier habits to keep your mind and body in tip top condition?

@@thepianokid7870 1. I haven't done any competitions, and I honestly didn't have that many personal projects. If you are a CS major, you should definitely put it on your applications.
2. I think it is fairly easy. I know a lot of my peers have switched to CS during their sophomore years, and the CS requirements are very light compared to the other majors.
3. I wouldn't say the math I've taken has gone up to differential geometry, but we do go over things like set theory. If you are a math or ACM major, then of course it will be very advanced, but because I have chosen the ML track, I wouldn't say the math is extremely advanced. One of my friends, however, is taking the mathematical track, and they are always working on complicated math problems I can never understand. It all depends on what you're most interested in!
4. I would say most companies are pretty good at helping you maintain a healthy work/life balance. In terms of working during the school year, I like to start my sets as soon as they come out so I have enough time to work on them and come up with questions if I have any. I am also on the volleyball team, which forces me to take a break and focus on my physical health. I would suggest giving yourself time to take a break and participate in social activities because while there is a lot of work to do, you can always set time aside for other things you enjoy.

I feel like mainly CS majors do get these positions, but I have heard some cases where other majors have been hired. I heard some companies actually seek people from other majors who can code (like physics, for example) because specializing in other areas leads to different ways of thinking, which is beneficial for their specific projects.

How many hours a week of work did you do at khan academy? Do most tech jobs hover around 40 hrs/week? What made you choose being a swe over something like a data scientist or product manager in tech?
I worked around 40 hours a week, maybe a little less. I chose SWE because I enjoy coding projects, and Iâm not really interested in analyzing data. I also canât be a product manager intern, but maybe in the future after some years of working I can transition to be a manager!

So, being a computer specialist, can u fix PC? If Microsoft update totally destroys PC, can u undo and put PC in a fully operational state , even if it is say, 10 years old .

Uninstalling/ reinstalling windows or removing that damned update . I am not talking about fixing hardware . Microsoft update has to do with the coding, registry corruption. That is not a hardware. Hey wAmy and Angel I am currently a senior who is considering majoring in Cs but understand there will be calculus which Iâm not really good at. Like if your not that good at math is this major right for you?
I personally don't think calculus is the core of CS (there are a lot of other concepts associated with it), so if you are still interested in it then you should still major in it!!

Is Georgia Tech's CS major better than Caltech? If I don't really want to go into research, would you choose Georgia Tech CS over Caltech?
Good question! It depends on the student. Keep in mind that getting good at interviewing is really just LeetCode at the end of the day, and Caltech might have more prestige at the tech companies you want to work at. Georgia Tech is amazing, and Caltechâs opportunities are incredible due to its small size so you might find recruiting a bit smoother. Also, like my cs friends, if you want to go into industry, you can regardless of the curriculum! The Caltech experience is also unmatched in my opinion!
@Wamyy5 Thanks for the response. My biggest concern is that I am also from Minnesota which is a bit too far away haha. Also ngl Caltech intimidates me. Idk what the admissions committee was thinking to take me in lol đ . I am really conflicted with the two and even though Caltech is obviously the winner in prestige, I think I'd let the costs decide. I hope it makes sense to go to GT if the yearly costs are more than 20K < Caltech.
i thought a management consultant associate compensation (salary + bonus) paid more than a softer engineer fresh out from college if compare to similar big firms in both industries, like BCG vs Amazon or something like that.

Yeah so right now, total comp for analyst/associate (the term for first-year consultant differs between firms) is lower than your average total comp in MAANG. Keep in mind the other forms of compensation like bonuses, stock options, etc. Even if the total compensation was about the same, you work way more hours in consulting and donât get perks like the free meals and gym reimbursements lol đ đ
@@wamyy5 Thanks Amy. Things definitely have changed. I always thought that investment bankers and management consultants made much more than software engineers when fresh out from college. However, I think consulting get you more expose to the world but the hours are really bad!
