Hello and welcome back to Winners And Losers World Cup Edition. On today's show McCubs and Dougie are breaking down the Netherlands' 3-1 victory over the USA. This game featured star performances for Memphis Depay, Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind, but we want to focus particularly on how to improve the US ahead of their home tournament in 4 years time.
With particular weaknesses at centre back and centre forward, we run through the options for who could be their new stars in 2026.

Which position do you think the USA need to improve the most? 👇
Striker, USA has none.
Could use a competent back line. Ream and Zimmerman are not good enough
Centre back and striker
Coach
maloney and henry
We've lacked a true number 9 for years now and Berhalter made quite a few weird decisions. Reyna and Aaronson were barely featured and probably could have helped our creativity
Fr. Did you see Aaronson making the defenders stutter with his stepovers and Reynas plain deception getting the better of VVD. Imagine a full attack of these types of players. Oh and a new coach😂
Preach brothers!!! We've got a young team full of talent at every position except up front. The main issues for me are lack of size and not having a good enough 9. We needed a 9 who could challenge VVD and Timber, a big strong CF who can put his head thru the ball and not get shoved around in the box. Dest and Jedi put crosses in but no one was there to jump with the CB's from Netherlands.
Leaving Ricardo pepi home is ridiculous
We don’t lack a “true 9”. We have quality there, just have a terrible system that provides 0 chances for the strikers
You don't know where I'm from dawg
You mention the lack of CB’s, but it’s important to remember that the 2 who may have been first choice in Chris Richards and Miles Robinson were both injured (and both under 26) so along with CCV it doesn’t look as bleak for 2026. Tho CB is the main area for improvement 👍
kobi henry and leonard maloney
Remember the name Josh Wynder. Imo he’ll be one of the best young centerbacks in his age group by 2026
John brooks probably wont be a starter in 2026 but he would have been an improvement on both ream and zimmerman. Still cant understand what the coach had against him
@@adamspadafora8251 Brooks has only played 10 min for Benfica this season, was fine with him being left off tbh
@@Anderrated7 ya he hasnt managed to fit in anywhere. I think its possible he has a serious attitude problem or something, coaches dont seem to like him much.
To be honest I was pretty happy with how we played today. Although we lost, I thought we created a pretty good amount of chances, the amount of crosses were a bit frustrating though given the Dutch backline is so strong. We pressed very well also. We are a young team and our inexperience definitely showed defensively today as well as our need for a number 9. We have nothing to hang our heads coming out of Qatar I think a lot of us Americans are feeling very optimistic moving forward and for a good performance in 2026
You definitely did, Pulisic puts that first chance away and it’s completely different.
I thought we played really good attacking football. Don’t believe the score reflects how competitive we were. I think our center backs tried their hardest, but still played at MLS level.
The US has done great developing Wingers, Midfielders, and fullbacks, now we have 4 years to find/develop a CB and a ST.
Yes
We really just need a clinical striker and maybe a new coach and we’ll be set
USA need a better back line aswell plus better wingers , Dest is decent though
Should try and get Balogun off England and Nigeria
@@hotsince0550 Chris richards and miles Robinson were supposed to be started for us, but both are injured so we had to rely on Zimmerman and ream, who in fairness didn’t do half bad
80% of teams these days need a clinical striker, it's easier said than done
@@ibrahimhashim2281 I thought ream played unreal considering how everyone thought about him coming in and his age
Balogun is the obvious striker that should come in for 2026. Trusty at CB too.
The video I've been wanting from Football Daily!!
I'm happy with the USMNT's performances at the World Cup. Got out of a fairly difficult group, a Last 16 exit was the most likely scenario in my mind. But glad we got young players in to gain good experience for 2026.
A world class coach would change everything. As good as MMA were, you still feel like Reyna or Aaronson (or both) should be on the field for longer.
Most of our team in this World Cup are going to be in their prime in 2026. There are a lot of good players in the U20s and younger as well. We’ve got a promising future!
Need a natural 9 and better center halves… other than that they were great
Good shouts - the midfield were particularly impressive despite being caught out today.
[Michael]
Austin Trusty is doing really well at Birmingham rn. Next season I hope he’s back from loan getting minutes at Arsenal. He’s 24 right now
We do have a natural number 9 and we left him at home. Ricardo Pepi should have made the trip and he currently plays in the eredivsie for Groningen. He had 6 goals in 9 appearances prior to the World Cup.
Your mistake here was thinking Berhalter would make a logical like putting Pepi on the roster. Berhalter's tactics and player selection are horrendous.
Pepi will be good in 2026 but this was one world cup too early for him. Would have had him in the squad but he doesnt get us past netherlands
@@adamspadafora8251 agree but he certainly would have played better than Jesus and never in a million years should Jordan Morris still be in the USA squad
@@adamspadafora8251 No one is saying Pepi would have been our savior at the 9, but even with his youth he's a much better player than Wright. Besides Haji's (extremely) lucky goal, he did nothing right any time he was on the pitch, and the lack of effort when he came on AS A SUB for 25 minutes vs. Iran was pathetic.
Berhalter has to go if the USA want a shot at a deep run in 2026. He is horrendous tactically, and even worse when it comes to player selection. All but one substitution he made the entire tournament legitimately made the team on the field worse.
Goated duo presenters. Love a McCubs and Dougie vid!
Thanks Callum!
(Dougie)
The USMNT played well, those boys should be proud!!! While we may not be a top 10 team now I can see us in the top 10 by 2026 when all our guys are healthy and have more experience. By then we'll have a few new faces, hopefully a dominant CF, and the guys who played their asses off in this tournament will be in their prime.
Very interesting
Its jokes now til we take balogun and leave you lot with brewster🤣
The thing is that only 1 player on the US team had World Cup experience before this tournament
We’ll be back with a vengance
USA can try a 4321 with Pulisic & Reyna/Aaronson playing behind Weah/Pepi.
I think Van Gaal was smart (assuming it was deliberate) to let the US have the ball and then hit them with quick counter attacks. Because normally if you think of an LVG side it’s slow possession dominance and not many goals.
The funny thing is if LVG does that it’s “winning football” and revolutionary, but when Gareth Southgate does it he needs to be sacked?
Trusty is an emerging cb. On loan from arsenal atm and doing well.
Zimmerman had a promising pairing with CB Miles Robinson of MLS before Robinson tore his ACL. He'll be 29 in 2026, so we'll see if he can come back strong in the next cycle. I always root for Carter-Vickers!
We need our cbs in solid european clubs
Quality in defense and quality goal scorer. Easy to say, hard to find
The Americans can feel optimistic about the next world cup they're definitely on the up
Defensively the US was not focused like they were against England. Offensively it was the usual, high energy, created decent chances but they were never really going to score more than 1 goal
Need to get a cb
The USA team remind me of Beyblades. They start out fast and look great, but eventually lose their momentum and peter out in the final third.
Josh Sargent is the best striker overall for our side imo. The problem is our coach isn’t great
My view as an american football fan is that the problem areas are left back, striker, and general cover across the forward line. We have right backs to spare, I think some young guys, john tolkin or jonathan gomez could contend at lb, dest or scally could both do shifts there too. Cbs for 2026 i would hope will be richards and miles robinson, with eric palmer-brown and ccv as backups, with maybe some younger guys like justin che and wynder to fill it out. At striker, we need a deputy for pepi. Ferreira is not a striker, and i dont think he is good enough anyway. We can see what pefok and sargent are doing in 2026, but hopefully we get some talent coming through there. Weah and pulisic should be starting wingers, but i would break up the midfield and put reyna in for musah, and have musah and aaronson as cover for both midfield and winger. Aaronson has a brother who is pretty quality, he could have a lookin for 2026 as a mid or forward. Goalie we should be good with an older turner and/or slonina whos going to chelsea
Why on earth would we break up the mma midfield
@@austinlarrimore6542 i think reyna is more talented than any of the three in there and he is a natural CAM. Musah and mckennie can rotate for me, and adams is a lock as our only very good cdm, but reyna will create chances through midfield, as opposed to putting in shitty crosses as a first option
If they could convince Balogun to play for them (USA) that could also help with options up front as well.
the problem is we dont have consistent service
@@ektran4205 Now having a fit Reyna should solve that problem.
@@sesughakpera service from every where not only the right and the center
@@ektran4205 true, but remember you can have Pulisic and Weah on either side of him, I also believe more talents would emerge in the coming years, especially given the rapid rise of MLS. Point is I believe the USA will be a force to reckon with at the next world cup. Probably getting a good head coach ASAP so they can adapt to his/her style well before the next world cup will be a major deciding factor as well.
US outplays England- I sleep
US loses: Real shit
Pepi was left out by Jesus Ferreira. Not Haji.
Why did we not take Jordan Pefok 🤦♂️🤦♂️
first thing first get an experience couch🧐
Folarin Balogun could solve the No.9 issue in 2026
Adams and McKenney are good but they need more experience, Adams was terrible on tracking back , you can't leave the middle with players crashing in open.
Honestly if no true number 9 emerges we could always play a false 9 as a way of getting all of our most creative players on the pitch at the same time. Right now I'm holding onto hope that Folarin Balogun chooses the US over England
Every US fan will tell you striker is the biggest need. I doubt we have fixed this situation by 2026 and I think we should play more of a 4231 and get more creativity with a front 4 of weah, aaronson, public and Reyna.
Surprised there was no mention of Josh Sargent, was definitely a bright spot for us in the group stage, was a shame he was injured or that Netherlands game would have been different; still young and has a bright future. Berhalter has got to go, the decision to not bring Gyasi Zardes really hurt us and after the Iran game, Cameron Carter-Vickers had to play today, if he was on the pitch it might have been a different story. Definitely think we will be ready to compete again in 2026!
No way you said Gyasi Zardes he’s horrible 💀
@@bradenhines1809 Haji Wright got 1 lucky goal but he was terrible when he got the chances to play, and Jesus Ferreira was not ready to play. Zardes would have been a veteran that could have turned up. Never know
@@julesg6602 clearly aren’t a real usmnt fan if you seriously think Zardes could make a difference, if anyone should’ve been brought it’s Pepi or Pefok
So true, he is the best 9 USA have.
@@julesg6602 none of them should have came😂 Pepi, and pefok at the house is a joke
Balogun might declare for the US 🇺🇸
I can see a couple of young 18 year old center defenders growing into the USA squad over the next four years. Sergeant is by far our best #9. I love Robinson's athleticism and his heart is the best but he needs to work on his skills and his pitch awareness, he looked poor today. I'm not sure if it's the coaching but Robinson needed to close on Dumpfies but just let him pass freely. Killed USA. Good tournament for USA I'm very happy for them.
First we need to get an experienced international coach.
As a nation, we're so naive on how to properly build and sustain quality technique and tactics. This team is young but that doesn't just automatically make us dangerous in 26. Have to look at how young, yet injury prone our young stars are. Particularly Pulisic, Reyna and Adams. A new manager, #9 and overall reboot is needed.
The rate of player injuries has increased significantly since Covid started, so this is not just a USMNT problem. Even club teams that don't make very deep runs in their domestic or continental tournaments have had to deal with such short turnaround between games it's putting them at risk. It's the exact reason Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp publicly shamed FIFA/UEFA for their plan to go back to 3 substitutions earlier this year, which FIFA/UEFA eventually back-tracked on.
@@FromTheStands definitely didn’t help squeezing in this World Cup in the middle of the year and making every club play way too close together
@@austinlarrimore6542 Yep, in regular World Cups, players are ALWAYS released from club activities 3 full weeks before the WC kicks-off. For Qatar, players were forced to play a league game on November 11th(!!!), and then the World Cup kicked off on November 19th. It's insanity.
Either need a 9 or need to change play style.
what a pefok? guy is doing well in the bundesliga
The best thing to do for the U.S. is to get an actual coach, not one who got his job because his brother worked for the federation.
USMNT desperately need a true number 9
GET JESSE MARSCHE
geggen pressing is not the way
The USA had no real scoring threats, they need a true #9.
they need far more than that
just give some Dutch players a US passport. Ow wait, nobody from Europe is interested in that.
Fix them? They did just about what was expected from them, they aren’t going to beat countries like Holland for a long time
USMNT need better coach.
If USA beats top ranking FIFA nations in 2026, they will cause a great upset to world of football/soccer.
Berhalter for sure has to go
American here. Greg got it wrong. He thought that the Netherlands were gonna possess the ball more which is why Zimmerman got the start over carter's vikers, and with Chris Richards out Zimmerman is our 4th choice centerback. Main issue he's not good on the ball at all, ream is good on the ball but Zimmerman is super poor. Up front I have no earthly idea why ferreira started that was a disgrace of a decision, especially when hagi Wright and Sargeant linked up so well with the midfield and wingers in the group stage. Overall extremely proud of this team I adore this side. The Netherlands got the goal and essentially said "go on and beat us" and wecouldn't. WE expected to be the underdogs, but they knew we couldn't break them down with vvd in the back. Overall proud of the boys
It's easy. Don't put any MLS players on the USMNT. The roster should be built by the best players USA has in Europe.
What's wrong with the MLS
Just get a south american coach, you guys need to stop looking that much to europe and focus in how the game is played in the continent, play Copa America, play Libertadores with MLS teams, that's the way.
The us needs balogoun or pepi at the 9, get mls players like aaron longass and shitkeel moore out!, and most importantly #berhalterout
Reyna on, Berhalter off.
American Fans...Who is our next manager? 🇺🇸
Definitely just need a solid centre forward who can put the ball in the net. tough ask, as they seem to be obsolete in football in general at the minute. I thought dest was there best player, suprised he didn’t work out at barca thought he looked solid if maybe a bit naive at defending
dest and robinson showing why they weren’t called up for their home countries
They don’t need “fixing”, the last 16 is a good result for the USA
Firstly stop calling it soccer
We as fans need to fix 2 things as well.
1. Call it football
2. Forever stop with the “I Believe That We Will Win” chant. It’s the WORST
Get more players from liberal arts schools, it strikes fear in the enemy
Don't really know if they need much fixing anywhere, they just simply were outplayed by a better team
Unfortunately my country holds other sports in higher regard and that in itself has MASSIVELY HAMPERED the overall quality of the US mens national team forever. If football ⚽️ was the most popular game(as it is virtually EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THIS WORLD) & our best athletes played it. Well, then id surely bet my life that a team with LeBron James in goal, Justin Herbert & Josh Allen at CB, Mike Trout at DM, Stephen Curry in the 10, Stefon Diggs and Tyreek Hill on the wings and Lamar Jackson up top is a team that would be pretty fcking hard to beat in a world cup... ahhh, nice to imagine. Only if Baseball ⚾️, Basketball 🏀 & the other Football 🏈 weren't far more popular in this country!
Mate I hope you understand athleticism and talent in one sport does not necessarily translate to another. That is foolish reasoning. There are far superior athletes in regards to size and speed than the likes of Leo Messi and cristiano Ronaldo who didn’t have those 2 talent to succeed in football.
@@maximusorbis2548 As an American, I completely agree. Never understand the people who act as if athletes athleticism in other sports would translate to good technique in football lol
@@Anderrated7 yeah I mean you need to be a completely different type of athlete to be good in basketball compared to soccer. It’s a stupid comparison
Pretty sure if they wanted to the us can find money
What a load of typical american crap
Oh my God Fotball Daily gets on my tits sometimes. McCubin the worst but jesus christ people, get to the point!
At this point. Just don’t play soccer.
1. Stop Them From Calling It Soccer
As an American who loves football, it drives me nuts to see this stupid "it's called soccer" campaign.
@@benortiz6 It’s literally just a thing to make people mad and obviously it works
@@grantb5536 it definitely is. But as an American I can understand why people dislike us. We try being different for no reason.
The football was made by an American btw
There’s no fixing a country who calls holding an egg football
The ball is one foot long. Its a measurement it has nothing to do with the shape. The entire game is based on measurements and the ability to reach certain distances in a small amount of attempts.
@@melosivitch So true😅🤣😂
As an American, American football should be called American rugby (or just hand egg). There is only one football and it is beautiful.
I mean sure, but the USWNT seems to wipe the floor with their opponents most tournaments so…🤷🏼♂️
@@THENOCK1366 there’s not one football… I mean association football… the sport you know of football only became a thing because it had to differentiate itself from rugby football and Gaelic football. There’s also Australian rules football. Then america created gridiron football. Association football became assoc, which then became soccer. Rugby was also known as rugger for the same reason.
Until you stop calling it soccer and call it "football" not a chance 😅
Soccer. Now go cry about.
They need to increase their attack repertoire, starting from using cutbackpass-shoot. for reference copy hollands attacking style.
