I grew up in California in the 70s and 80s. I always took the song to mean the female is the state of California - a beauty with her beaches, her pretty pretty friends, Hollywood, etc. At that time, you could come to California with dreams and survive. Tom Petty came in the 70s with very little money in his pocket and made it. But many didn't make it.

If you listen to their song from 1980 the Long Run, the song "Those Shoes" has such a funky bass line and changes that the Beastie Boys sampled it for "High Plains Drifter"

There are a lot of videos of Roy's amazing ability to play any stringed instrument. Modern guitarists who have reaction channels are funny to watch. Their eyes just get bigger and bigger, and if they play guitar to demonstrate what the featured guitarist is doing, they often just stop the video and exclaim, " What was that? What did he just do?!"
