  • Walking through how I tackle master studies of John Singer Sargent’s charcoal sketches.
    There’s a bit of an audio glitch 1:35 but only lasts 10 seconds so bear with me!
    Materials:
    - Moleskine art plusSketchbook: 135 * 210mm
    - Generals charcoal pencil - 4b
    - Tombow mono zero eraser
    - blending stump

    Wow. Great work. I found out through genealogical research that Sargent and I are distant cousins. Too bad I have zero artistic ability 😂 Thanks for the video.

    Thanks. I've never used charcoal but have bought some and will take the plunge soon. I agree about a millimetre or so can make all the difference between getting a likeness or not. I think you did a pretty good job: I think in the Sargent portrait, the sitter is looking at the viewer, whereas in yours, he is looking into the distance: a good example of a millimetre or less making all the difference.

      Thanks! It’s called the overlay cut out photo editor. It’s free and does the job but you do have to put up with a bit of advert spamming 😄
