I feel so happy by seeying this. Every time i see people talking negativity about the new generation i fell bad, like, i feel unable. I see that in the past, the peoples was just about to live their lives and support bands, and today, when people see some guys with like, emo hair, punk hair, punk clothes, corpse paint, grunge clothes or trying to be somebody useful, the only thing they make is talk bad shit about it. I think that today, the peoples just need to support themselves. Every day i woke up and see people saying in the internet like "dont judge another people when they just trying to be herself" but the same people that say this, make the same thing, its just hard to explain. Here in Brazil, me and my friend are the only guys with an different hair on my class yn, so people talk every time about my hair, but like, they make sarcasm of my hair, saying to me like "bro, cut your hair" or "what the fuck is this hair bro", or they just make sarcasm on me because i like rock music yn, its hard to explain.

Hard agree. I remember when "the wave" bands were active (Touche Amore, PBTT, La Dispute, Title Fight Etc.) and that sparked a sort of revival in the late 00's-mid 10's. Fact of the matter is that screamo/skramz has always existed to some degree or another but it's ebbed and flowed and will probably continue that trajectory. To give a specific example I think it's funny that the video mentions a band from Denton Texas, but ignored the history that just that specific scene has with the bands Two Knights (early stuff is twinkly later stuff is closer to skramz) Fleshborn, and Father Figure (all 3 bands being pretty incestuous in terms of band members).
Overall this one really missed the mark and I say that as someone who was pretty involved in the Midwest scene during the '10's.

Lmfao there's nothing like new bands taking influence from old nostalgic bands? LMAO MY GUY...This is a constant in the scene. So you just havent been paying attention to the ongoing metalcore revival which peaked a few years back? Or to the emocore revival bands (Truth Cult, Praise, Search For Purpose, Winds of Promise, Bent Blue, Glean, Anxious, Full Color Dream) that literally led to the current emo/screamo revival (which is how this 'skramz revival' was absolutely predictable and i called it in 2020)?? Or idk how every straightedge band ever from the dawn of time is still ripping Youth of Today and Judge? The hardcore scene has always been a constant cycle of rehashing old trends in new contexts. This is not a paradox, its the very nature of cultural trends and the dialectic through which new syntheses are created. The thing youre talking about at the end, "nerds driven to their own corner to make their own scene" is exactly what already happened 30-40 years ago to give birth to "emotional hardcore/emocore" in the first place. If you talked to these kids in these bands you'd know they're following in the footsteps of people who came before them. Not even getting into how you skipped over how the "emo revival" of the late 2000s to early 2010s was literally from the skramz scene and there are still tons of millennial screamo bands out there and last year they even put out that Balladeers, Redefined comp, or like how Alex Bigman was and still is in screamo bands (Seeing Means More and Ghost Spirit) as if scenecore existing (not "warpedcore" which would also have to include late 90s Americanpiecore pop punk bands like blink, zebrahead, gob, and fenix tx, as well as ska punk...😬) meant that actual skramz didn't exist when it was literally made to differentiate the active hardcore bands like Comadre and Fire Team Charlie from the mallcore and scenecore acts you mentioned.
All in all i do appreciate this video. I really do. Im just a stickler for the true history of emo hardcore and i hate the idea that the underground somehow went away while the alternapop stuff was dominating, and the revisionism about the 90s etc. Trust me, i do the same thing on Finn's videos (been a fan of his since way before he was on youtube lol, SYWH - iykyk). So im always gonna leave some knowledge for anyone who cares to know these things.
    anyways, remember kids:

I appreciate attempting to do a video on this because it helps the screamo scene in traction but the history here is bad even in the obviously simplified Crash Course version given here.
The history is incredibly myopic. Also this narrative connecting the pandemic to it 'coming back into fashion' feels like a stretch. There's also the problem of skipping like everything 2000s-2010s in this essentially. Screamo has certainly had a revival but this video frames it as if this entire period before nothing really happened which is just inaccurate and shows an unfamiliarity with ins and outs of the screamo scene and hardcore.
In regards to the modern screamo focus for pillars of bands, I understand the monthly listeners and view criteria to help with this process but this is such a strange collection of bands to choose as pillars of modern screamo. Vs Self, Party Hats, Habok, and Catalyst are all wonderful bands but only Vs Self should remotely be in this convo if one wants to have it. Some other (and imo better) options:
Frail Body (Rockford, Illinois. Not having any Chicago or Milwaukee connection in the diagram theory is insane, neglecting what imo are two of the most passionate and biggest screamo scenes right now)
Knumears (California, US. They do get mentioned at one point tbf)
OLTH (Far better NYC pull frankly)
    Massa Nera (New Jersey, US)
    Piri Reis (Malaysia)
    Senza (Oregon, US)
    Gillian Carter (Florida, US)
    Soul Glo (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US)
Portrayal of Guilt (Party Hats are dope but are a weird pull imo over Portrayal)
    Terry Green (Canada)
    Shin Guard (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US)
Note these bands are not just from the US and each is basically the standout in their local scene. If a band can't easily say that, they shouldn't be in a four pillars of modern screamo convo. I understand it was more to showcase favorites and potential but it's not even a list of the some of the primary bands getting hype.
Neglecting non-US screamo also seems problematic when discussing the 'comeback' of the genre as a lot of it has happened outside the US. The Southeast Asian screamo scene is where a lot of current magic is happening, bands like Piri Reis, Piet Onthel, Naedr. It's definitely a must to check out some of these live sets. European screamo should also have been mentioned in some capacity even if it hasn't been as peak currently as North America and Southeast Asia. It's still very significant and merits a mention. There's also all of the Latin American screamo w/ artists like Dear Diary, This is From My Teenage Angst to My Adult Self, Xcxdxrx, etc.
Not mentioning classic screamo bands also coming back or doing reunions (like Saetia, like City of Caterpillar, Gospel, Orchid, Jeromes Dream) is a big miss.
Just think all these things deserved at least a mention or two in the same way stuff like how the term 'skramz' came to be. Also not mentioning the origin of the term 'emoviolence' as well next to that in the video seems like an oversight. So mostly have this comment as an addition of info to the video I guess.

I feel like lot of sub-genres of the umbrella category known as Vaporwave also have this "paradox". Skramz hits different though since it's guitar/rock instrumentation based music when there has been such a heavy shift to purely electronic instrumentation over the past couple of decades.
Sano Ex Machina, Fiesta Bizarra, Cassus, Steeples, Choirs, are a few newer bands that have emerged in the past 15 years that I thought did a cool thing with Skramz torch.
Great will be the day when a Zoomer Skramz band can put out an album as hard and well rounded as Lineage Situation by Neil Perry.

Im so glad this video popped up in my recommended. I was on tour with my Prog Metal band (The Judge The Juror if youre looking for something technical, psychedelic and surely to piss off death metal and prog fans alike) and on one of our dates, we played with this band called "Astrology Girl" which was certainly a little more on the emo side of it, but 100 percent had the old screamo feel and they filled me with so much nostalgia, Im stoked to hear that there is a resurgence. Id highly recommend AG btw.

as a zoomie who was a senior when the quarantines began, who played in a band that got pretty popular in the scene (played with vs. self during their first gig), and who often frequents these shows around LA cuz I got friends who love going, it doesnt take alot of science to understand how the fresh minds of youth conform to whatever is trending. Playground mentality, they want to be seen having fun and uphold something as having a good time, so they ride along with whatever is happening. HxC shit is an easy pill to swallow for the youth, it "just sounds cool and rebellious and full of raw energy" I Dont really see this much as a strange phenomenon.
When the zoomies finally discover that imagination in music is really what began "cool" Ie. non conformism, individualism, and creative freedom, etc. thats when history will again pay attention to "rock music" or "popular music" or a future branch for new music.
For now, we plant the seeds of influence.

the only thing about the new wave of scramz is the people that use the look and feel that scramz is about as a trend because of tiktok, when music is derived from emotion and pain, a community that is based around trend and not that same emotion makes the scene less strong and real

Ngl it's kind of wild how much you talk about California bands (almost exclusively?) and then talk about the torch being dropped like the scene wasn't still happened for years inbetween. Like I appreciate you giving love to the newer bands and the legends of our scene, but you really didn't seem to do much research outside of what's popular now for bands from the early 2000s and what's popular now. There were so many incredible bands after that and so many thriving scenes and spaces that you had the opportunity to touch on. There's some genuinely sick stuff I think you'd like if you went back and read up on it!

Wow, 90 seconds in and so much already wrong. Screamo hardcore being "new" to the late 90s, emo and hardcore being "diametrically opposed" when emo was wholly a product of hardcore (even most the whiny indie pop punk bands of the time), and pretending like the underground screaming crying bands are "gigachads" and not the beta cucks compared to the actual chad rockstar bands who dated famous models and actresses and are rich.
"Screamo" aka "chaotic emo hardcore" did not start in the late 90s on the east coast. It started in the early 90s on the west coast in bands like End of the Line, Heroin, John Henry West, Navio Forge, Sleeping Body, Honeywell, Reach Out, Mohinder, and Clikatat Ikatowi, and of course Portraits of Past. There were some east coast bands like Merel and Iconoclast that also presaged screamo but they weren't as well known or influential. then in the southeast this style mixed in with powerviolence and metal which gave birth to the joke genre 'emoviolence' via In/Humanity, which became kinda real in acts like Palatka, End of the Century Party, Eurich, Reversal of Man, and Assfactor 4. THEN you start seeing tristate area bands like Puritan (pre-Hassan I Sabbah), Instil (pre-You & I, Neil Perry, Welcome the Plague Year, The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, etc), Sky Falls Down (pre-You & I, Hot Cross, Nora, ETID), and Parades End (ex-Remain, Mean Season, Outspoken, pre-Le Shok, FM Bats, The Twilight Transition) start bringing in NYHC mosh metal to the sound. This combined with influence from Canadian bands like Shotmaker, Grade, Union of Uranus, and One Eyed God Prophecy then finally gave birth to the late 90s screamo scene you're talking about. But "skramz" is a catchall for any real emo hardcore so it applies back to even the likes of Moss Icon, Current, Indian Summer, Nuzzle, Maximilian Colby, etc. and the kids now are definitely taking huge inspiration from that era, ie how bands like Julia and September have blown up with zoomer emo kids.
Now time to watch the rest of the video...

I’d like to add some more to the topic and share about the 2010s screamo scene in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas. Bands like Loma Prieta, Beau Navire, Calculator, and honestly probably one of the most important sleeper skramz bands LEER. Most of these bands came from the Bay Area and would constantly have shows in places like Pomona and La Puente at places like VLHS and BRIDGETOWN DIY and Alladin Jr (still having skramz shows under a different name) which is where a lot of the bands of skramz bands are coming out now. 2014 to 2017 was an incredible time for skramz and definitely the precursor to everything coming out of SoCal now. Sadly LEER and calculator have broken up but it’s good to see Loma still going at it and Sean being in Jeromes Dream now. California has always had a strong but small skramz music scene even before the 2010s but honestly I’m not too familiar with that time lol
