Zion National Park Winter RV Camping

  • We're visiting one of our favorite places on the planet: Zion National Park in Southern Utah. Zion was my very first national park, and the love affair it sparked for the great outdoors was a big factor in our decision to RV in the first place.
    Although we've been to Zion many times, this is our first winter visit. One advantage of coming during the off-season is that there's almost nobody there. We weren't sure what to expect when we arrived in Watchman Campground, so we employed our usual full-timers' strategy of arriving early on a weekday. It turns out we had nothing to worry about, as we were virtually alone for three days, except for a couple of other RVs and a few intrepid tent campers ("intrepid" because the forecast called for a nighttime low of 10º F during our stay).
    Watchman Campground has a decided advantage over many National Parks, as there are a decent number of big-rig-friendly sites, including some with 30-amp hook-ups, and even a few 50-amp sites.
    We've driven both of our RVs through the Zion - Mount Carmel Tunnel during previous visits. If you're planning to take your RV through the tunnel, be sure to check in with the ranger station first. Hours for oversize vehicles are limited, and a special permit is required.
    When you arrive at the tunnel, they'll shut it down to oncoming traffic, and you'll drive your RV right down the middle of the road all the way through. It's a pretty cool experience, although likely a little intimidating for a novice RVer.
    We've always loved Zion, and think it's one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. But the snow is like the icing on the cake, adding stark white to the palette of red rock, green trees and vivid blue sky.
    We couldn't have imagined Zion being any more beautiful than every other time we've visited... but it actually was.
    Check out the video for a tour and overview of this magnificent, magical wonder of nature.

    We went there 2 summers ago. We made a day trip from taking vacation in Las Vegas. It was amazing and so beautiful. I'm so glad my friend that lives in Las Vegas told me about it. My kids said they loved this more than Vegas (I say kids, they're 25 & 29). I highly recommend this for anyone that is in Vegas.. take a day from the drinking and gambling and enjoy nature!

    You make great videos. When I visited Zion for the first time it was 1963. I was 11 with my family on a 3 month cross country camping trip. We were able to stop at the vista overlooks in the tunnel. I was there a year ago in the Fall, I certainly understand why that isn't done today, it is a very popular park.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Před 7 lety

      Wow! You're right about there being too many people to stop inside the tunnel, but at least in the winter things were quiet enough that we were able to slow down a lot for filming. :)

      RVgeeks That's good to know. Our oldest son lives in Central Point/ Medford area. We visited Crater Lake in July 2003. There was snow on the ground and so cold. Thank you for bring back all the memories of Zion. Looking for adventures though out southern Utah, for an April-May trip to the five parks. Fell in love with Zion 20 yrs ago and we've been back a dozen times. Always get the same question, which park is my favorite. After 33 different parks under our belts, I would have to say Yosemite is by far my fav and Zion is a very close second, very close. Always tell people to see all the parks in Utah because Utah is a very special place, with all the colored hills, valleys, slot canyons and its unbelievable beauty. Love Zion with snow. Bryce is even higher so they should have lots of snow. Thanks for sharing, thanks for the great video. Take care and safe travels.

We'll be going into our second year of FT'ing next year. Last year we did BC to Nova Scotia and back through the US. We are looking for other top spots to act as center pieces to our travels. And seriously, I have learned more from your video's than anyone else's. I've come to trust what you say. Thanks.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Před 7 lety

      We did do a video about one of our other top national park picks: Glacier! czcams.com/video/BnV9Elax5jI/video.html
      We don't have videos about our other favorite national parks, but they are, in approximate order: 1) Yosemite!!, 2) Glacier, 3) Zion, 4) Crater Lake, 5) Sequoia, 6) Arches. We also love Canyonlands and Yellowstone (of course). We've been to every single national park west of the Rockies (many of them multiple times), and our attitude is that they're all designated a NP for a reason. The above are our personal favorites, but not nearly all-inclusive. We also love the Grand Canyon, but haven't had the chance to explore it as completely as we'd like (haven't been to the North Rim... or hiked down into it... yet)!
      If you want to blow the whole list apart, we'd include the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, Icefields Parkway). Once you include those, the whole list gets re-ordered! ;-) Sounds like you may have been there on your cross-Canada trip already.

The road is much improved from the first time I drove it 30 years ago, when I moved to Alaska from California. I'm a full time rv'er for 2 yrs. from the Northeast. I have a 35' class w/ tow vehicle. I'll be visiting No. AZ & So UT for 39 day for the first time starting 3/6/17.
    I'll be going the following areas starting at Cottonwood, AZ, Lake Powell, The Wave, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks, Canyonlands, Arches, Natural Bridges, Monument Valley, Painted Forest. & maybe Mesa Verde and probably more.
    How long did you spend in Zion this visit? Do you have have suggestions on places to visit and how to visit to achieve the most. I'm trying to park the RV in a central location and site see as much as possible w/ the car.
    I've been to a -lot of the NP from So. Dakota, Montana & Calif.. From Glacier National to the WA coast, down the coast mostly on RT1 to San Diego, AZ now UT. Last yr I did Maine to Florida to Texas then diagonally back the Northeast..

      Hi Joe! We stayed three nights in Zion this trip, but if it's your first time, and you'll be there in the spring (my first visit was in April, and the weather was fantastic), the amount of time you stay depends on how much hiking you want to do. As with many other places of dramatic natural beauty, the real way to see Zion is by getting out on the trails. Obviously, Angels Landing is #1 for us. Observation Point is another one of our favorites. The Narrows hike may or may not be possible in the spring due to water levels in the river. Check with the visitor center to find out. If it's open, it's epic, but you'll need to rent a bit of specialized gear from a local outfitter in town. Also, either make your reservations for Watchman Campground as early as possible, since it is very busy in the summer, or plan to show up early on a weekday for a 1st-come, 1st-served site in South Campground (right nearby, but with fewer large spaces and no electric sites). We'd stay at the very least four nights, giving you three full days in between. Of course if you have more time, there are many more hikes to do in Zion. You could easily fill a couple more days if you have the time. Research and plan your trip at nps.gov/zion.
      You can't realistically park your RV in one spot and visit more than one or two places by car, because they are so spread out geographically. But you don't have to, since there are places to camp in each destination.
      We'd suggest that however much time you spend in Zion, allot half that much time in Bryce, and if you're short on time, skip Cedar Breaks, which is really just a miniature version of Bryce.
      If you're planning to hike to the Wave, you will have to either win the advance lottery for hiking passes, or go to the local ranger station the morning before and try your luck at the daily lottery drawing. We've won passes twice... once using each method. But it's become VERY popular, and demand for the few passes available each day is high. You want passes for Coyote Buttes NORTH. More details here: www.blm.gov/az/st/en/arolrsmain/paria/coyote_buttes.html
      PS - I just checked, and the lottery for the time you'll be there has already passed (4 months ahead), so your only chance is the daily draw at the ranger station. We parked in the Wal-Mart lot in Page and got up early to go out to the ranger station for the drawing the following morning. We did that two days in a row before winning. Your only real chance is to allot time in Page, start each morning at the ranger station, and then use the rest of the day for other great things in the area (Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Glen Canyon Dam Tour, etc). Good luck. It takes time, determination and luck to get to see the Wave.
      We LOVE Arches and Canyonlands, and they are two parks that are close enough to camp in one spot for a week and see a lot of both parks. Monument Valley is close enough to Page that you shouldn't miss that either.

    Looks great. Which park did you stay at and which entrance do you use. The east entrance looked a little tight for my 40' rig. We are towing a car so just need a convent place to park a few days. Will be there late April.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Před 7 lety

      We came in the West Entrance, through Springdale, which is a no-brainer for RVs to enter, and stayed in the Watchman Campground, right there in the park, not at an RV park (you can see all the details in the video). The East Entrance can handle your 40' rig as long as it's not over 13' 4" tall. But you do have to arrange for and pay for ($15) a permit to drive through the tunnel. Don't expect to show up at Watchman without a reservation in April and have much chance of getting a site, unless you come on a weekday morning and get lucky. There are commercial RV parks in town (with full hook-ups), but they're a lot more expensive then the National Park campground (and not in the park). ;-) We'd suggest reading carefully through the trip planning section of the Zion website before visiting: nps.gov/zion

      Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. Really appreciate it. Really enjoy watching your videos. One quick question, we have used an electric blanket 3 different times just to warm up the bed. We turn it on 20 min or so prior to going to bed and then off. Each time, it works fine for one night and then next night it doesn't ever work again. We have taken them back and got a new one, same story. Seems like it is burning out the control. Any thoughts?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Před 7 lety

      The only problem we've heard about with electric blankets is if you're running it off of a Modified Sine Wave (MSW) inverter. For some reason, the electronics in the controllers for electric blankets/mattress pads seem to be very sensitive to the power source and need Pure Sine Wave power, like what comes from the electric company (or a Pure Sine Wave inverter). So if you've been running the blanket off of a MSW inverter when not hooked up to power, that would explain it.
      If it's happening when connected to shore power, it sounds like the outlet you're using them on could have a bad ground or some other wiring problem. You might want to try plugging the unit into a different outlet (preferably one that's on a different breaker if possible) and try it again to see if you can isolate the source of the problem. You could also get one of those little plugin circuit testers to see if it identifies a problem with that outlet... and test the others in the RV to determine if its the wiring in the RV that's a problem.
      Let us know what you find out!

    I have some questions that I always had after watching you guys, 1 how do you get deliveries like from Amazon, 2 what do you do for work (if you don't mind me asking) and 3 are you two a couple? Thanks in advance and I loved the video!

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Před 7 lety +3

      It takes a little planning to receive packages sometimes. The best is when you know you'll be visiting a friend or family and have it sent ahead to them. You can also use a service called Amazon Locker, which you can find in a lot of major cities (we've never had to use it, so I guess we know people in a lot of places)! We design websites for RV parks for a living. Started our location-independent business nearly 10 years ago, and now have customers all over the country. Yes indeed, we are a couple. Just coming up on 21 years together. :) So glad you liked the video, and thanks so much for the nice comment. :)
