- A cheap home made PVC target stand that cost less than $20 to make. It's a great versatile target stand that can be made to fit any specific target of your choice. The best part is you can easily take this target stand apart for easy storage.
What you need to build one target stand:
6- 15" 1 1/2" PVC sticks to make the legs
4- 1 1/2" PVC tee's
1- 18.5" PVC crossmember. You can make this piece any length you want in order to fit the target of your choice.
2- 4 foot 1"x2" wood sticks for the supports.
the thing i love most about your design is that you can bring along different sized crossmembers (depending on the different widths of your targets) and interchange them so easily on the spot because nothing is glued in place. great simple idea. thanks for the vid.
Of all the PVC target stands out there, this one works, it's cheap, it's stable - and easy to make more stable, and the one cross member makes it more versatile and easier to adjust to fit different width targets. Good job!
Thank you for making this video, there are a lot of videos on making PVC target stands but this one is by far the easiest and cheapest. Cost me $14.58 out the door at Home depot & another $3.88 for a 4 pack of plastic (4") spring clamps for the 1x2 uprights. It stays together without any issues being unglued and that is even in 10 mph winds using weight on one of the legs, and I have used it at least 5 times at my outdoor gun club pistol range, the targets are hung 25 yards from the shooting station and it sucks having to lug everything around when you want to shoot closer...thank you for solving that dilemma for me!
Made 2 of these over the weekend. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the video.
Been looking for some less expensive stands to make and really love this idea. Thanks for posting and sharing you materials list.
I like this. Thank you. Looking at this, I cannot believe I was having so much trouble trying to conceive a target stand that could be easily built and replicated. Looking forward to putting one together, giving it a try.
It not over-engineered and can be disassembled...Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this.
Just got all my materials from Lowes, thanks for the simple design!
I used most of this same design with a couple of modifications. Instead of the cross bar in the middle, I connect the two sides using the cross piece on the front bottom. I also drill out the firing strips to different heights depending on what kind of shooting I do. A great design. Thanks
Great video. I built 2 of these using all pvc. I did not put end caps on the bottom pipes because my shooting pit has really loose sand and on windy days I put sand in the bottom pipes to stabilize it. Easy peazy. It's strong enough to hang a 10" steel plate from it.
You won the Internet for the day! Best DIY idea yet!
I made this today and it worked out perfect. I made the crossbar a bit wider, but your directions were spot on.
Perfect!!! 2021 New to shooting and the local range here needs us to bring our own targets. Started to build a stand with 2"x2" 's with 2 crossmembers.. Nevermind that Im buidling this!!! Thank you!!. I ride into range with motorycle too. Great Ageless design!! Thanks
GREAT Video. Thx. Heading out tonite to build one. Be safe, remain vigilant.
I've built this-works excellent.
if there's a wind you may have to weigh it down but that's simple to do.
Awesome vid! Thank you for the detailed description. I can also use the stands to hold my fishing poles while I drink mah beer! yeehaw!
Just made a couple of these. Cheap, easy, and works. Thanks.
Thank you!!!! I have been searching locally and online! This is a GREAT idea!
Nice stand. Think I'll make a couple.
Put caps on the base and put dirt in the tubes
I watched this video, and I brought some PVC pipe. The ABS pipe was the same price as the PVC. I didn't plan to glue the piece together. Thank you for the video.
Thanks dude, great idea! Making a couple today... happy Shooting!!!!
Nice video. How far do the wood sticks go down into your pvc tubes? Thank you.
This is cool, you can also fill the legs with sand for more support
just came across this while looking for a simple pvc target stand that I can pack to/from the range. Question I have is since you shoot in the wide open yonder how does this work in windy conditions? you ever have to peg it in place to keep it from blowing over?
This works great!!!!!!!
This is dope and simplicitic
this stand looks awesome. im gonna hit lowes tomorow. i been looking for an easy design.
Nice stand man
Excellent !!!
Nice. Keep it simple!
Went to Lowe's today to buy supplies to make one of these. The T's that Lowe's sells would not allow a 1x2 furring strip to be inserted. I had to buy 2" PVC and T's. I don't know if it's the stuff Lowe's sells or what, but there was no way it would stay together without gluing it together. I did leave the cross beam unglued so I could adjust the size if needed. Works very well. Thanks for the design.
How much pipe did you need??
great video. thanks
Also you can make self healing rubber targets from stall matts. Paint them white and wala!
Great idea.... thanks!
Thanks for the vid this one makes quite a bit of sense...
It can blow over in the wind pretty easy. A good way to fix this, besides using sand bags or rocks, is to drill holes and stake stake it.
I use to drive stakes until I saw a guy use 1/2” x 10” lag bolts and an impact driver in the desert for tent stakes, I do this now, great hack!
Just what I was looking for. Do you have dimentions.
Thanks for this video. Just bought my materials and will get started constructing. I plan to use it for an indoor airsoft target. Shooting real bullets is getting too expensive.
@ldbaize Mine are 4 feet. You can make them as tall as you want. I just took a 8 foot stick and cut it in half.
Awesome. Thanks!
If you have lots of spent lead bullets, use some to weigh the stand down in windy situations. Rebar pieces work too.
Thanks for the vid! I just made two for an upcoming trip and only cost me $15 each.
That terrain looks like Eastern Washington or Oregon.
Thanks for giving the measurements.
Very interesting!!! But 1 1/2" = 38 mm?
Why then 4 foot 1"x2" wood sticks for the supports., will they fit inside the pipes?
Real nice
this is a great idea..
I think I know where you filmed this. Near Sparks, NV? I've been out there several times. Great design by the way. Thanks.
I'll have to get one how's the magnifier that comes with it
Hi,
My understanding is you have 2 x 15" upright legs. 1 x 18" cross bar but what is the ;length of the bottom 4 x ? feet.
Great Video!
How do you like the vortex red dot I'm thinking of getting it
@bigchrisdom24 Thanks. The best part is it's simple. People try and over complicate things.
My Grandpa always said K.I.S.S. is the best.
I like this vid a lot; just have a question:
How do you fit the wood stick which larger base side is 2" into the PVC with a diameter of 1 1/2"? Am I misunderstanding?
A 2" piece of wood is actually 1.5".
@ldbaize No problem. You're welcome.
Nice job. I love making stuff like this. I now have a weekend project.
Thanks for the great idea. Do you staple the target to your wood batts??
Tutto Bene I cut cardboard and staple it to the wood, then staple the target to the cardboard. I use sheet targets though. If your targets are boards then yes you could staple it to the wood posts.
Thanks for the video. Didn't like the heavy metal stands that are out there that require you to add on tall 1x's. This will be much better for transporting and storing. I'll just bring a small sand bag to set on the leg to help prevent it from tipping over (we get a bit of wind out here where I'm at). Thanks again!
How did you fasten target to boards ?? (tacks)
@bigchrisdom24 Personally I love it. I'm actually thinking of getting another one for my second rifle build I have planed.
glue everything but the center cross member. then thats the 2 sides, cross member and teh wood poles. that seems pretty good to me.
Do the 1 x 2 wood pieces move around? Wobble?
Would You do this with 1" PVC and smaller wood?
What size wood fits inside the 1.5” pvc?
I made a mistake and got 1 1/4" pvc pipe, but it ended up being a great mistake, because the wood fits in the pipe with a perfect amount of tightness, and is almost at 6' height, because it can't go down past the t's , yet is tight to the point that it can't come out.
I made one similar to this but it was a little more cumbersome than this one. I am going to make this design. I could see gluing the T's to the vertical legs as it doesn't add much length and would be less to have to put together.
Do you have a video on how to build a target stand by steps?
What are the dimension of your targets?
or make the horizontal " foot" supports at a 90 degree angle to each other
Forgot to add i put end caps on it to keep out dirt and drilled small wholes on each end to drive long nails through to keep it stable against the wind...thanks again.
Where do you see "3 legs?"
Or fill the bottoms with sand or water
Do you have problems with it toppling over due to wind?
a couple sand bags made out of old jeans filled with sand and sewn at both ends would keep it still thats what i plan on doing
Or for those of us without sewing skills or jeans without holes a flat rock or cinder block will work.
Local hardware stores have empty sand bags ~ 50 cents ready to fill.
Another idea would be a tent stake on the four corners after drilling a pilot hole thru the PVC
or U shape stakes.
What are the dimensions on your wood posts?
Gregor Beals 1x2 5 ft long
"3" 15" sticks? Not 4?
3 on each side; 2 on the ground and 1 upright.
PFI dude??? Sounds just like him.
Check out my new vid for instruction on how to build an actual target for weapons up to 175 lbs
@bigchrisdom24 Not the best. To be honest with you I never use it.
Instead of PVC, I suggest using ABS pipe -- the black sewer pipe. Being brittle, PVC shatters when hit. ABS can withstand hundreds of hits.
Blaine Nay thanks for the tip. Ill look around for that pipe vs the PVC
You get the idea from TheLateBoyScout? Cause if you did, like i did, i think its a good idea to give him and his vid some credit.
Don't use sand. Use water for weight. When you're done shooting just pour out the water.
What’s the purpose of the wood? Why not just build the entire stand out of PVC?
It's cheaper to replace the wood and the wood gets shot up very quickly
Also allows you to staple cardboard or paper to the wood.
