Native American Sites of the Chicago Region - The Bambery Site - Batavia Twp Illinois

- In this video, we explore the Bambery Site in Batavia Township, Kane County, Illinois, situated between Batavia and North Aurora, along the eastern banks of the Fox River, across from the Mill Creek. We describe the site's discovery and mapping by the amateur archeologist, August Mier, in the early part of the 20th Century, on lands owned by Henry Bambery. We also investigate the history of the landscape, from pre-contact times to the more recent. Finally, we assess the dating and meaning of the site, based on Mier's finds, some of which are still stored at the Batavia History Museum, in Batavia, Illinois.

Excellent story great history you should do a write-up on the Huber site 11 ck1 Southwest Cook County I had the opportunity to assist the archaeologist in 2020 and in 2021 also it was a early Oneonta sight that had contact material with Europeans

I'm just glad your boys didn't dig up the area which is now Fox Valley Country Club, where I spent many days hacking away trying to break eighty...and the nearby cemetery where my dad and brother are buried.

From our recollection, the only digging that took place at this site was light industry in the form of sand mining, around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. Archeologists have dug a few minor test pits in the area to the west of Route 31 - but that's the extent of it. August Mier did only surface collecting.
Sadly BobbyLee, FVCC is now passed into history as well, and is a new subdivision.

There are rumored to be many underground caves within the that particular area in Red Oak, as well as the area across the street where the new build area (former golf course) is.
One small one on the east bank of the Fox River there was called "Devil's Cave" in my youth... not big at all but you could crawl around in it a bit.

@@BeHistoric Best to check when the river is low; it was probably formed by the swirling river over a millenia. Definately not a subterranean feature. About the size of three sofa's if I recall correctly. Unaware of any other types of caves in the area but it's the nature of these things to remain hidden. ;-) It was well south of the entrance to the old Country Club, perhaps across from present day Sharon Lane.
