I think them not sharing about themselves makes their love even more compelling. They fell in love with knowing the person in the most intimate way. Not by sharing things about their lives but experiencing their lives firsthand. They get to know the genuine relationships and hardships the other lives with. Learning each other's personality through how people interact with them. Love it

I'm glad you got to this movie. The director is Makoto Shinkai and frankly any of his stuff is great. He's done a few - "Voices of a Distant Star", "The Place Promised In Our Early Days", "5cm per second", "Garden of Words", "The Children Who Chase Lost Voices" (also known as "Journey To Agartha"), "Weathering with You", and they all come recommended. "Suzume" is his latest though it's so new I haven't seen it yet. Away from Makoto Shinkai's works other staple anime films I might recommend would be "Summer Wars", "The Girl Who Leapt Though Time" and "AKIRA", "Ghost In The Shell"..

I’ve been to Japan several times over the years (my mother is from there), and during my most recent trip a few months ago I went on a little trip around Tokyo looking for the specific locations featured in the film. It was cold and wet and getting very dark towards the end, but it was absolutely worth it just to see these places in real life.
As you can probably gather I really really love this film, everything about it from the gorgeously detailed animation to the awe-inspiring soundtrack to the beautifully heartfelt story that balances out the goofy body-swap hijinks of the first half (kudos to the voice actors for both leads) with the more bittersweet and melancholic romance of the second. Absolute masterpiece all around.
If you really liked this one, I’d definitely recommend checking out the rest of Makoto Shinkai’s films, especially the ones he’s made afterwards, Weathering With You and Suzume. They’re definitely somewhat similar in terms of the story content and general vibe, but they feel different and unique enough to be well worth your while

Your reaction was so sweet it got me crying along with you even though I’ve seen it so many times. I've never seen anyone figure out the time difference early just from the name of that photography gallery he visits being "Nostalgia". That was a great catch!!
Some more non-ghlibi anime films I can think of with a similar tearjerk romance vibe are Wolf Children, A Silent Voice, Josee The Tiger & The Fish, Ride Your Wave (beware that ones really tearjerker), The Case of Hana & Alice (ok that ones more female friendship but I think its funny and the ending is great), Belle, In This Corner of the World, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Some other non-ghibli ones I like just for the sake of recommendation: A Letter to Momo, Mirai, Giovanni’s Island, Tekkon Kinkreet, Tokyo Godfathers, Patema Inverted, Lu Over The Wall, Rainbow Fireflies, Summer Wars, Suzume, Weathering With You, Liz & The Bluebird, Colorful, Ongaku, Children of the Sea, Night on the Galactic Railroad (those last few are more experimental & weird so probably not great for reaction vids. i just like them for being different.)

Anime used to not be like this. Older animes very often have bittersweet or just straight distressing endings, even downright depressing. They loved their tragedies. Getting attached to characters was more dangerous than getting attached to the characters in a Slasher film. Watch films from the 90's and earlier at your own risk.

There was a Japanese TV show that had a segment on this movie not long after its release as they noticed its popularity among the older generation keeping it in the movie charts (despite the film being marketed to young adults/teens).
They invited some older generation folks to a special screening and placed cameras in the movie theatre towards the audience, then interviewed the people afterwards. Needless to say, many of the old folks were in tears, and noted that the "red string of fate" (symbolised in this movie with Mitsuha's ribbon and the dream sequence at the shrine) which is prevalent in Eastern oriental cultures was something they experienced in their own lives - like an invisible bond - some people said they met their spouse/soul mate or found something they were looking for.
Here's the segment with subtitles from that Japanese show back then - czcams.com/video/gTsafIFkxTs/video.html

Your Name- Mokoto Shinkai’s highest rated film, but also on that goes the hardest on trying for mass appeal. The themes in this film are present in a lot of his other films (so much so that critics say he keeps making the same movie).

I can see a few recommendations for 'Weathering With You' and 'Suzume', but his other, older stuff is also quite good. Nat, I wonder if the K-dramas you watched with similar premises to "your name" came out after this movie? When the movie was released, it was the biggest non-Ghibli anime movie ever in many countries, particularly in Asia, so I wonder if those dramas were influenced by it 🤔(I haven't seen it, but I heard "The Lake House" also had a similar premise to "your name" but preceded it by a few years)

I've watched The Lake House multiple times. It's definitely cheesy and didn't get good reviews. But... Sometimes I guess I like watching "bad" movies lmao. It has some similarities for sure

Your Name probably relates to a lot of people because it sells the fantasy that just by wishing for a different life, you can get it.

Idk if someone already explained it but: if taki would habe written down his name it probably would have been erased like the phone texts. But love doesn’t vanish so this message written on her hand was protected. In japan people also belive that two people who love each other are conected by a red string (like mitsuhas string she gave to taki).

This is info i got from other youtube comments and the reason he wrote i love you is because after seeing the memo disappearing he knew his name would disappear. But apparently declarations of love would be protected by the moon god or something. Among other waster eggs that other have mentioned. Also the cast from one movie will have a cameo in the next movie i think. I only have seen a few movies in the list of movies he has done and i do not notice stuff so i have no idea.

As others have said, I'd also recommend "A Silent Voice" as well as the other films by Makoto Shinkai like "Weathering With You", "Suzume" and "5 cm per Second" (this one is an older film). Personally, I enjoy "A Silent Voice" and "Suzume" a little more. Expect to cry.
I was in the theater and so many folks gasped audibly at the end of twilight hour (Katawaredoki) when she disappeared. The pen drop was so jarring that it took a few seconds for me to comprehend it. This and "A Silent Voice" are typically the films I recommend to folks who want to get introduced to anime.

  • @RaixsOreh
    @RaixsOreh Před 6 měsíci

This entire film is basically just there to set up the last few minutes if the film. Because that's what the story is about.
You know that feeling of how there's something missing in your life? You don't know what it is but your soul is yearning for it? That's basically how they felt the entire time after taki woke up at the school with no memory of everything.
The most important part of the story is the final few monutes and the rest of the film before that is just trying to give you an experience to make you feel what you're supposed to feel.
Taki and mitsuha didnt know what their souls yearned for, living their lives day to day, until they finally locked eyes and knew they were meant for each other. And we know this because we watched the rest of the film.
