    You *_WANT THE GRAIN PARALLEL TO THE LONG EDGE_* if you want full strength.

      For gusseted blocks you want the grain going from member to member. They are for transferring compression load through the joint and the gussets take the tension and hold it together. None gusseted joins in days of animal glues could have the grain run radially in the sections with an angle of less than 20deg if needed to hold a member that is exposed to high tension loading,. Later the guidance was still to use grain across joint but make blocks 50% bigger in tension applications, as wood less liable to shrink in that direction and resins glues have improved Bond strength compared to animal glues on end grain.
