  • A step by step time-lapse video of shaping and glassing a longboard. Surfboard dimensions are 9’2” x 22.75 x 3. I used a polyurethane foam blank with two layers of 6 oz fiberglass cloth on the deck and one layer on bottom with a tail patch. I used Greenlight marine grade epoxy resin with colored tints to create a resin swirl. I used a Bahne fin box and FCS leash plug. Logos were printed by boardlams. Pin lines were made with resin and black pigment.

    Would love to see a video for beginner board builders where you do a start to finish of a board and explain the details (like what materials are used and why, why you choose to do ? many coats of fibreglass, the trade-off between strength and materials/weight, etc). It's quite intimidating for people looking to start. Anyways, great video and loved the look of the board!!

      Check out some of Andrew W's videos - he does a great job explaining the process. I'm more just showcasing my work and builds. You could also try a mini shaping hobby kit from greenlight to get a taste for the process before doing a full board build.

      Up to you. For this board I did concave under the nose for nose riding and a vee on the tail. Flat in the middle.

  • @elflacosalinas
    @elflacosalinas Před 2 lety +2

    Question: when do you add the catalyst? Before adding the cup with paint to the resin? I tried to do swirls but it ended up solidifing too quickly under the fiberglass.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Před 2 lety +2

      This board was epoxy so it uses a hardener. You mix the color into the hardener and then mix it with the resin right before applying. For poly resin, mix the color and then add the catalyst when ready to start laminating.

  • @kevinm5564
    @kevinm5564 Před 3 lety +1

    What kind of planer and sander do you use? Can you get good results with less expensive tools? And something ive always wondered: why do you have to sand the final coat of resin?

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Před 3 lety +2

      WEN electric planer - cheapest one out there. Variable speed sander. You could just use a sanding block and not any electrical tools, its just more time consuming. Sand the final coat to flatten and then bring back to a gloss finish

    Whats the difference between the hot coat and the gloss coat? Are you mixing the resin with a specific chemical?

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Před 3 lety +1

      No difference with epoxy, but with poly resin is thinned out for the gloss coat to give it a high gloss finish. Epoxy is just another coat to seal the pin-lines

    • @boccacantiga5095
      @boccacantiga5095 Před 3 lety +2

    what does “hot coat”mean? varnish or other epoxy composition? thanks for ur videos. I make my first sup from extruded polystyrene. 9' length, 4'' thickness. Do you think it will be tough enough after glassing? without stringer. And what is the viscosity of epoxy for glassing?

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Před 2 lety +1

      Hot coat is just a borrowed term from polyester resin boards. You add more catalyst with poly resin to make it kick faster which also makes it go hot faster - hot coat. But for epoxy resin, the hot coat step is just a fill coat since the resin mixing ratios are always the same of 2:1 so it doesn't cure any faster. Strength depends on how heavy of fiberglass weaves you are using and how many layers. Without a stringer, you'll probably need extra strength in the glass. This board is only 2 layers of 6oz on the deck and 1 layer on the bottom which is pretty light for a longboard.
