    I have an Aero Long half belt in Chromexcel that I purchased in 2007, and a King Of the Road I purchased in 2009. Both were wonderful experiences ! At the time, there was a gentleman named Mark Moye taking orders for them - he lived in South Carolina. Both of these jackets have aged beautifully, and now have a fantastic patina ! I wish I needed another one !!!! Yours is gorgeous- wear it in good health !

    CXL looks pretty darn nice, i would like a jacket made out of boot leather. My heaviest jackets are chrome tanned cowhide around 1.4mm, since i am from Mexico and there is not much variety to choose from here. Most leather (I am guessing some 70 or 80 percent of the jacket production) chrome lambskins which unfortunately are very low quality, i would call superficial tanned, then calfskin around the same thickness but far more durable and better tanned, horsehide (Which actually is quite supple almost as lamb, here in the country some cuts of calf are the stiffest hides you can get) which is not worked by most companies (Tanned by a few, and sewn by even fewer) and finally pebbled cow and steerhides (Sold as equals) which are usually the motorcycle grade.
    I have indeed seen other few hides around like kid / goatskin (But i guess that would be better for gloves and such) and thick imported bovine (Steer / cow / calf) but those are not used much, if not at all in the jacket industry here. Naturally there is also veg tanned calf and lambskin for very high end products but i haven't ever seen a veg tanned leather jacket in my life. Boot and shoe leather is usually cow / steerhide which is rather stiff from the tanning process, same for the hides used for bags and wallets, and the heaviest hides from the market here are vaqueta or veg tanned bovine, around 4 to some 6 or 7mm thick. Used for belts, straps and soles.
    Greetings, nice jacket

    I had gotten a shinki leather jacket, half price off of eBay, which was just slightly tight in the chest and shorter in the sleeves than I would want. A few times now I'd go outside, in hot weather and under bright sunshine, and managed to stretch the sleeves a bit. With the jacket fully zipped, I've also rotated and swung my arms and its helped improve the chest fitting. The heat is helped loosen the leather the way i needed it to.
    Horsehide is not as fixed as some people might think and I feel I'd rather start off somewhat tight rather than too large. I would have preferred to have started with the correct arm length but it wasn't an insurmountable obstacle to overcome and I had managed to get the sleeves comfortably fitted past my wrists. yay!
    My jacket now it fits like a glove. My efforts, for me, have meant I didn't have to purchase a custom Himel and I had paid 1/3 of the price I would have otherwise.

    I don´t know if you have already decided on the "next one". Just wanted to mention a nice option. I have a Bootleger in Steerhide that is (a bit like your D-pocket model) a bit leaning towards biker jacket with the diagonal zipper. As a second and clearly different Aero Leather, I got a "Happy Days" in Horsehide. Very simple, pilot-type jacket in a softer and thinner leather. Both jackets complement each other perfectly. Bootleger: Thicker and more wintery; Happy days: softer, way less break-in time and kinda easier to wear (you can even wear it with chinos and a pair of more "fancy" Aldens and it still looks top).
    BTW: The steerhide I have is a thick as the standard Horsehide (I had a Horsehide Highwayman) but it feel smoother overall and creases nicer to my opinion.
    Just an idea,

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  Před 3 lety +1

      man THANK YOU for the recommendation!! I am finding this leather jacket business just as addicting as boots!!! You have given me more models to go research :-D I do have another one coming from Aero which is the Hooch Hauler in Russet Badalassi, but after that I will be looking into others

    • @olgi2068
      @olgi2068 Před 3 lety

      @@DalesLeatherworks really consider the Steerhide, if you have the option. To my opinion, it creases nicer and feels a bit less stiff than Horsehide despite being super thick too.

  • @drewmeyerhoeffer467
    @drewmeyerhoeffer467 Před 4 lety +2

    You can also get CXL in horse butts. But they are obviously a bit thicker (too thick for a jacket) and also not the right size for the pieces of a jacket. Also, horsehide is probably denser than cowhide split to the same 2-3oz thickness. So I would agree that, for a jacket, you are 100% correct that this is a "pleasant" surprise. I loved the one side of horsehide that I have built some wallets from. The sides they used look particularly clean as well.
    Do you think when they say Badalassi they are referring to Badalassi Carlo? If so, to have an Italian veg tan jacket would be pretty incredible. Badalassi Carlo is the maker of a couple famous leathers like Pueblo and Minerva. Not knocking American tanneries, but the consortium of italian vegetable tanned leather tanneries in Tuscany is home to some of the best leather in the world (Badalassi Carlo, Tempesti, Ponte, Walpier, La Perla Azzura, etc.). If you throw out shell cordovan, I'd say the area is unequivocally the best in the world for leather.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  Před 4 lety

      horse butt CXL as well? SIGN ME UP!!! I swear the more I collect different leathers the more I'm realizing that the sky is the limit as far as the hides, the colors, and the processing involved all seems to be interchangeable. And yes, I believe the Badalassi referred to in the samples provided is Badalassi Carlo, it's something I first heard of from Jake (almostvintagestyle) and after looking into it I realize I have a pair of shoes in Badalassi from Grantstone!! Their description of it is "This vegetable tanned article is tanned in one of Italy's boutique tanneries which specializes in the process. Badalassi vegetable tanned leather "
      Yes it's phenomenal leather, extremely durable, I'm planning to maybe go for another custom in Russett Badalassi :-)

    Aero is way overpriced for the quality of the garment. The zippers will fail rather quick. I truly do not understand why Aero goes with zips knowing the low quality of the products. Many other companies are getting in to the small market. All of them still equal Lost Worlds quality. However, they still do not have the desire of going the extra mile. I personally own an original j23 and j24 in pristine condition. This new repros are far super in quality to the originals.

      I couldn’t imagine what would cause an Aero to come apart at the seams... I’ve had many high end leather jackets, and Aero’s seams are incredibly robust. No skiving to thin down the leather for a “prettier” seam. I owned an Aero a size too small and was VERY rough on that jacket, trying to stretch it out a bit. It belongs to a friend now and still going strong. I currently own a horsehide jacket from a maker that costs more than twice of an Aero, and while it is beautiful, I would be hesitant to stress it’s seams in any way. I’m sure there are some samples that have failed, but in my experience, it would take some serious abuse to accomplish.
