Blacks Britannica (1978) | Controversial Documentary on Racism in the UK

  • Racism in Great Britain is explored in this documentary. The argument is made that economics is the basis of discrimination in England, which is exascerbated by opportunism throughout the political system. A cross-section of black citizens are interviewed, and footage of street life and violence are used to illustrate how the class system keeps them at the bottom of England's society. - tcm.com
    ---
    "BLACKS BRITANNICA is a relentless and engrossing indictment of racism toward black immigrants to England, told from an obvious Marxist perspective. The film argues that discrimination in England is based on economics and fueled by opportunists across the entire spectrum of British politics. Told through the eyes and words of a cross-section of blacks, David Koff's film uses interviews, stock footage, and scenes of street life and violence to show how blacks in England are trapped at the bottom of an economic and political system which shows little compassion or concern about their fate. Rapid editing, overlapping dialogue and cinema verité all build to an emotional and violent climax, whose conclusion is underscored by a reggae band's call for revolution. As Koff puts it, the film "reflects the increasingly militant response within the black community to the continuing attacks upon it, both by the fascist elements on the street and by the state itself." An official of the British Information Service in Washington called the film "dangerous" and asked for equal time. New York Times critic John O'Connor said the film not only documents the growing militancy, "but, quite clearly, the structure and tone endorse it."
    The program was originally scheduled to air on July 13, 1978, but the showing was postponed so that WORLD's executive producer David Fanning could make some changes. "I never had any dispute with the central premise of the film or with its contents," Fanning said at the time. He argued that the changes were intended to make it more understandable to the American public. But later, Fanning told Newsweek: "I was concerned with the film's endorsement of a Marxist viewpoint."
    Koff insists that two separate films now exist: his version and Fanning's. Fanning rearranged some of the sequences in the original version and removed about three minutes of footage including a sequence where British cops used black figures in target practice. The Koff film opened with an interview with black sociologist Cohn Prescod that became the matrix of the documentary:
    'If one weren't wary of talking about conspiracy, because in all parts of this country… it's clear that at top national level, and certainly at local level, the state has moved to manipulate blacks in any way it wanted to.' "

    I'm a white Southerner. Americans tend to think of England as the apotheosis of manners, taste, and behavior and have attempted to replicate their model since well before 1776. As a Southerner (both sides of the bloodline, white trash and "fallen aristocracy" in equal measure) I'd always thought WE had the global trophy in the racism category. Evidently not. It is both illuminating and depressing AF to learn that it's not just American -- it's endemic. As one of the many (unidentified) experts said, it was exported (along with everything else. for better and for worse) by Britain with the "Pilgrims." Thank you, Reelblack One, for this welcome -- while saddening -- epiphany.

    • @iancooll12
      @iancooll12 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Don't Have your epiphany Just yet, The poor whites built your Country and the UK, The Black slaves fed and clothed them, The first slaves the British used, and let us be clear here who those British people were they were the very upper classes od British Society, Britain still very much practices a die in your Traces and places society, They had so many white slaves from the 1700's on many were left to Die on old Napoleonic prison ships and transported by the same Black slave ships to where ever in the empire they were Basically sent to Die. Their Bones still litter British estuaries if you look online for the information. Catholic Scots and Irish, Jacobites and any poor transgressor, males were often impressed into the army or Navy, women and other unable males sent off, if you look at our poor laws you'll see how easy it was to turn any white member of the working and trades and crafts classes into slaves as they were basically subject to the whims of the squire or lord that Governed their Area, see the Tolpuddle martyrs. It was only when whites were found to be too sickly to work the fields in the South that they turned to paying for Black slaves, white ones were free, and they were then sent to more moderate climates, North to work for the Lumber Industries as my family were, when they carried out the Sutherland Highland clearances, spreading my family far and wide. North America was originally viewed as an escape pod should things go wrong for these European and British Aristocrats, who were given large land grants from the Crown, as they feared what happened in France would be more widespread as Hostility was rife. I'm not diminishing Black slavery or their suffering, but I don't want these people lost even further to revisionist history.
      The Fear of the Mob was still front and center in the minds of the British Royal family who wouldn't take the Zcar and his family when asked by the Russians, or acknowledge the British and Canadian Troops that they sent to Boost the White Russian Army plus the U.S, soldiers who were sent too, and sacrificed. it's why some Historians place the End of WW1 in late 1919, while it's usually listed as 11/11/1918. This was after the newly named House of Winsor, refused shelter to the Zcar and despite knowing, they were dead still sent these troops, Fearing a rising against them following the Losses of WW1. There is no difference between the suffering of white slaves sent overseas well into recent times and Black slavery that was Banned and enforced by the British African Squadron, in 1840's, while white poor children were still being stolen from their parents and sent as farm labourers still, in the 1970's. British and European aristocrats are not Biased between Blacks and whites they see all lower ranks as equal, simply to be used as expeditious or as they see fit.

    For anyone concerned this has always been the most honest documentary on the struggle for black empowerment in the U.K. I was a small boy growing up in this era and as a man I was part of the movements that black men created and organised to contend with this set of circumstances.
    The UK black panthers (now elders) some of whom are personal friends..The pirate radio stations like Genesis radio are mostly gone. Rasta HQ in Kennington was demolished by the council. The N.O.I. is greatly diminshed, Yemanja books is gone, Headstart books is gone although the P.A.C.M. still host A.L.D in Birmingham every year. This historic document exemplifies the composition, intellectual level and motivations of black men as they contended with racism before the internet, instagram or the "woke" era in which we find ourselves in 2021

Grew up in Wales and I've found that I've experienced a few instances of racism but honestly most black people I've met have been meaner to me - both the men and women. Colourism is pretty bad amongst my generation and just anti-black attitudes in general in addition to misogynoir. Many of the black men are anti-black women and some black women are anti-black women as well. If you're an unambiguous dark skinned black woman don't expect black people to be automatically nice to you, that's all I'm saying 🎤

Particularly the South Asians. The West Indian community also had their own businesses that were targeted by racist police officers and racists in general and in short, they contributed a lot to British society. Their only fault is the men dating out in droves/leaving fatherless children all over the place, but even first gen. African males are going the same way.
