  • This webinar will review the global status of BECCS and its role in mitigating the climate emergency. It examines the potential GGR of BECCS in future energy landscapes, the current status, the technologies, their TRL and performance, and the research and development (R&D) priorities particular to BECCS systems.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) scenarios, a 66% or better chance of limiting global temperatures rises to 1.5oC would mean an annual CO2 removal average of 12Gt/year until the end of the century (IPCC, 2018). This needs to begin immediately and ramp up rapidly over the decades that follow. IAMs show that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage or BECCS is pivotal technology with potential to sequester 10Gt of CO2/year (Royal Society & Royal Academy of Engineering, 2018), although sustainability considerations indicate 2-4 GtCO2/y is a better estimate. Implementation of BECCS at this scale is not without significant challenges. Just as GHGs are transboundary pollutants, so the biomass supply chain is global.
Development of sustainable, resilient BECCS systems that meet the SDGs will require careful management, particularly in relation to Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 13: Climate Action, and Goal 15: Life on Land.
