How two women trick a husband into buying a new kitchen. Svelte, perfect-looking Jane Peters and her equally svelte, perfect-looking friend are sipping coffee in their Paris original housedresses in the unnamed friend's modern kitchen. "I'm so proud of it it's almost indecent!" Jane's friend proclaims, wiggling one of her perfectly-shaped nails. She suggests that Jane go shopping with her on a spur-of-the-moment "small spree" (to buy more stunning housedresses, no doubt), but Jane sadly refuses. "I haven't got a dream kitchen to make things easier," she sighs. "Mine's strictly the nightmare-type."
Jane's friend is shocked, arching her perfectly-shaped eyebrows, shaking her perfectly-coiffed hair, and turning the corners of her perfectly-shaped lips down into a pout. Why doesn't Jane's husband move her out of that "older house" of theirs and into a freshly-built new one?, she asks, one with a modern kitchen that offers "freedom from uneccesary drudgery to go shopping when the urge takes you"? He certainly should, they agree, and the two women concoct a "plot" to make it happen. Jane has to visit her sick mother in Cleveland; she'll be gone for a couple of days. "Don't get TOO far ahead in your housework," Jane's friend winks. "Oh, no!" Jane replies. "I COULDN'T...."
Now we cut to George Peters as he struggles in Jane's kitchen. George -- brilliantly played by Darren McGavin -- is a slack-jawed mouth-breather who prefers to communicate either through grunts and ughs or by yelling at the top of his voice. His Neanderthal nature is understandable; after all, George doesn't have the priviledge of working in a kitchen "designed for efficiency and convenience." After two days of battling an outdated stove and water heater, sticky cabinets and ice cube trays, and a garbage disposal system that isn't automatic, George not only buys Jane her new kitchen, but a whole new "dream house" to go with it! The film ends happily for all, and Darren encourages viewers to visit a representative of their local homebuilder's association. "Believe me," he chuckles, "a few minutes now can lead to a whole lifetime of happiness. Happy homebuilding!"

At a point: you see the whole wall moving...its a flimsy prop and, he had to do that to keep it from opening as he pretended to struggle. The obviousness of that adds to a narrative that, he may just have a mental issue and he looks for things to be upset about. Poor Ralphie, he is constantly getting screamed at with no cause. That kid has to be nervous AF.

Unfortunately that’s how it is sometimes, where the kids are more proficient than dad. When my mother had late nights at work, I (her 15 year old daughter) was in charge of figuring out dinner for myself and dad. Why? Because I knew where the pots and pans were, and how she liked the washing done. Dad pulled his weight by chopping the veggies or paying for dinner when we decided to just order out.

That was mostly due to the segregation. Since everyone, including Puerto Ricans and Black people and so on paid into the system with taxes, but only white people got housing and business loans subsidised by the US Government, wealth concentration amongst white people went through the roof. To the point where, even today, on average, white people are 12x richer than people of colour if you look at household wealth. Then, of course, once the segregation ended. Suddenly social amenities like subsidisations for anyone aside from a few select corporations is a "handout".
So, you could just start subsidise housing again, and let people of colour have houses too. Just an idea. I don't live in the US, we already subsidise houses where I live and they're ridiculously cheap. Nearest town I live by have about 40.000 people in it. Only 11 of them were recorded as homeless last year. So it doesn't affect me. I'm just saying. That's how houses work. Good luck with your future democratic assertions.
Vincentius Smith I really don't think that's the only reason at all. The UK had a completely different setup for minorities, as did a large amount of Europe that never had much ethnic diversity at all- but women weren't expected to work then, either, and it was affordable.

No, the UK has subsidised council housing.
Just about every first world metropolitan society have housing subsidies. Some also impose rent caps. It's the easiest way to lower housing prices.
And, while I agree that racism is nothing to base an economy upon, my point was, the people who were segregated kind of deserve a thanks for buying everyone houses in the US. That was just credit where credit was due.

Your point applies solely to the USA, and was not the key contributor to the situation.

Oh yeah, I agree with that. I only mentioned it because, well, if you look at how formerly segregated places are compared to the privileged ones, you'll see an obvious distinction. Which shows that subsidised housing clearly makes a difference to people.
I was hospitalized for a month leaving my husband to feed himself & 2 kids. I came home to all new kitchen appliances! 😂

When I was a kid, my mom had to go to the hospital for an extended stay. To get the laundry done, he drew a picture of the control panels on the washer and dryer and took it when he went to the hospital to visit her. Luckily, he drew very well and mom was able to explain the whole process to her. This was in the 60s, so it wasn’t that far from this film.

So, here she is doing the 1950's equivalent of an infomercial to earn a paycheck. (She's 37 or 38 here and still gorgeous! She's about to turn 104 next week!)

I scrolled Instagram awhile. Doom and gloom and the country’s going down the tube. So I gave that up and came over here to watch vintage films where everyone is happy and the music is positive and hopeful and life is awesome. I think I’ll put on an apron and go bake something now. 😊
That guy reminds me of my dad. My mom broke her arm in a car wreck last year, and he got a crash course in housekeeping for a couple months. She actually had to talk him through changing the sheets on the bed. And after 45 years of marriage, he had no clue where the clean towels and sheets were kept. That blew my mind.
My dad used to boast about having never done the laundry. Probably considered it women's work if I know him. Sometimes I feel sorry for my mom. After my mom taught me how to make a quilt he insinuated that I might be gay because I could operate a sewing machine. I actually taught myself to sew doing upholstery, which is a field dominated by men. So not everything from the 50's was so great.
But nothing had really changed. Yes, more men 40 & under do household chores. But people are still as rigid and sheep like as ever. In the 50's society was rigidly organized around separate men & women's worlds. In the 2020s, women now HAVE to work, which means we've lost the parent who would normally keep careful with over what the kids are learning and doing. This has lead to massive fractures in passed down values, including anti-western culture sentiments.
We're also living through the insanity of men being legally allowed to change their birth certificates and drivers licenses to say that they're female.
So not everything is great these days, either.

I do that all the time with a certain young man in my life---he and his family (wife and their nine children) mean a lot to me, and I think of him almost as the second son I never had---and it's rather funny to see it in action.

My mother was born in 1921 and was obsessed with curling her hair and my hair and my sister’s hair. I look at these women’s hairstyles and I’m just like, holy crap! The hours put into screwing around and fussing with their hair. I remember the torture of my mother doing Tony home permanents on me and my hair just turned out like dirt fuzz. SOOO worth it 😆 When the 1970s hit I put a stop to that crap! No one was going to stick permanent wave lotion on my hair ever again! And I certainly wasn’t going to spend another day or night with rollers in my hair! Oh my God I was so glad to be away from that crap!😂😂😂

I hated home perms by tony the awful fumes. My mother and trimming my hair, she did such a bad job she let me wear her pearls to school, I looked miserable and pearls didn't help anyone but mom! She wouldn't go to store without lipstick and stockings and heels but would wear pin curlers in her hair. I never curl my hair,I cut my own, I don't wear make up but mascara and the only thing I refuse to leave the house without putting street clothes on,no grubby ts no jogging pants or sweat shirts, and brushing my teeth, I might run into a movie star lol.
Fast forward 20 years. Their new kitchen looks extremely dated so they borrow against their almost paid off house for a new kitchen...never really getting out of debt.

Probably not because even the 1970s they had mortgage burning parties where when she paid off your house people would actually have big celebrations and burn the mortgage paperwork. But by the 1990s, absolutely !

Actually, as their home value increased in the 60's & 70's, they probably doubled their investment and moved to another house. A median priced home in 1950 sold for
$7,400. In 1970 that house sold for $17,000.

My Dad was the youngest of a large family. When his mother passed away while he was young, he had to take over in the kitchen. Then he was in the Navy and fell into the hands of the chefs. He is a wonder in the kitchen. I learned from him.

That flour dispenser looks exactly like the one I have in my hoosier, except mine is larger and works with a small crank at the bottom. I don't use it--I keep my flour in the fridge...lol!

Gracie Anne I grew up in a ranch house and we had to do the same. Although I love the hum of indoor heating, theres something way better about heat from a fire. Makes everyone huddle together and have family time while it’s still warming up.
@@Great_Lake_Surfer_ my Gran had to light the coal stove to hear the house in rural Appalachia until 1989...had a well and outhouse too. I was burned on the stove as a toddler and used to be so scared for my little cousins running around in the house.
Actually that water heater is very advanced it dispenses extra hot water for the washing machine, now we wash in cold water and clothes are never clean.

Darren McGavin's not the only name in this; Marsha Hunt had worked steadily in feature films in the 1940s but had participated in a radio program against the Hollywood Blacklist called "Hollywood Fights Back," in 1950 and protested the House Un-American Activities Committee and was subsequently blacklisted from having a movie career in the 1950s. She turned to television acting and activism after that. Oh yeah, she's also still alive as of June 1, 2021, at age 103, one of the last Golden Age Hollywood stars.

I remember when my mother had to stay a week with my sick grandmother. My father managed to turn the laundry pink and the only food he could make was soup. One night he made this horrible lentil soup. My sister and I buried our portions in the backyard.😂

That's what I thought.🙉 American society helped men look like dumb bafoons even back then. It's a shame how we treat men in this country. Darren McGavin was the consummate actor. Whether playing awesome reporter Carl Kolchak in the old Night Stalker series, Ralphie's Dad in 'A Christmas Story' or poor old George in this hilarious film he was excellent.
I remember as a child, watching my grandmother doing laundry. She had a washer where you had to use what's called a wringer to wring the excess water out of the clothes. Then hung the laundry outside on a clothes line to dry. Sheets and towels were stiff and scratchy. Lol..I was born in 1955 so watching these videos brings back childhood memories of tougher yet simpler way of living..our 1st dish washer had to be rolled up to the kitchen sink where a hose was attached to the faucet. Two hours later dishes were done..lol..

Rebeccca I was born 55 Maytag ringer washers were made to last, once through to wash once through to rinse then out to clothes line, clothes pins, I know exactly how to hang everything so little wrinkles, and on to folding ironing table called a mangle. In 62 my mom got her dream kitchen, the dishawasher would get so hot we sat around it for warmth. Double side fridge, freezer small but built in ice maker. Microwave one of the first, my mom wouldn't use it,it scared her. Took years before she trusted one. All the technology and still no free time
My mother used a top-loading twin tub until her death in 2002. I continued using her machine until it broke down in 2013. I could have replaced it with the exact same model…the manufacturer was still making them, but I bought a front loading fully automatic instead. The washing was always, and still is, dried outside pegged on the line. I live in the UK, you time your washing to coincide with good drying weather…although that’s not always possible. It rains a lot.

After living in brand new condos for years... i moved to a vintage 1940's cottage with the original kitchen.... yes it was nice to have the modern condo kitchens, but I learned to enjoy my vintage kitchen... things like looking out the window across the lawn while doing dishes by hand... Luckily my roommate always refills the ice trays!... At least I have a garbage disposal.... funny how little u really need !!!
She was SO SWAMPED with housework but she had time to have coffee at her friend's house (?😳) get busy! Our mom's (or grandmom's) had to wash clothes in a boiling pot of water out in the front yard and use lye soap they made themselves. They had to gather the eggs, milk cows, pick vegetables from a garden they tended. They had to cook on a wood stove with wood chopped outside in all kinds of weather. Clothes were made from flour sacks or any other free material. Made by hand too, no extra money for a machine. Somehow these "superwomen" found time to give birth at home, then do 99% of the daily care for the baby and her other children since that care was often NOT considered the father's job. Families tended to be large in those days because there was no birth control. Bearing and raising children was considered a wife's duty. Society shunned women who chose NOT to meet this "obligation". People now have NO IDEA how to "make do or do without". No way that time was better but looking back I'd say, our generation has NOTHING to complain about.
that was the exact reality of my grandmas and my mother to a great degree, and that's what they taught me, skills that I don't have to use today. All good, but in saying all that, were the women you're describing, happy? nope. they were exhausted, run-down, bitter, self-sacrificing, old before-their-age women, that blamed their husbands for their misfortune and stayed because of the children or because they couldn't get a paid job... Not every man who wants a stay-at-home wife can afford one, not to mention that people need more stimulation than just cooking and cleaning all day every day. I've done it for years and was bored out of my brain!
Back in the days when women knew how to cook and had reason to appreciate a new kitchen. As a sales representative, I sold a complete high-end stainless steel kitchen to a new married couple paid for by the grooms parents. At one point, the new husband asked his wife why she needed everything high-end and stainless. ESPECIALLY SINCE SHE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO COOK. She immediately told him, "It's not about whether I can cook or not. It's about what it looks like !" SO there you have it !
These people spent their childhood in The Great Depression and adolescences or early 20’s getting through WWII. Look what they finally have in the 1950’s.

"Racism" in most places was incidental. The races got along much better than today. That wonderful world is now history. What's left will soon be ruined by people like you.

My friend and her husband bought their first home about 10yrs ago. It was a house built in the 50s that was originally owned by an old Polish couple. When i went over to check out their new place, they still the original stove, exactly like the one at 9:05 - and it was still in "like new" condition. The whole home had been emaculately kept. Supposedly, they had deep-cleaned the whole thing every week while living their.
I don't remember what they paid for it, i just remember they got an incredible deal.
