Segmented Base Rings for the Bottom of Bowls - Part 1

  • This is the first video in a new series of videos describing various designs for the bottom or base segmented rings for segmented bowls, eggs or bells.
    In this video I produced some segmented base rings consisting of 18 wedges or segments per ring all going to a perfect point in the center. I used alternating purple heart and maple woods to produce these segmented rings. After the rings were glued, they were once again sliced into 0.050" thick discs on the band saw and then reglued back together rotating each disc by 1/2 of a segment. I produced 5 different arrangements of these segmented disc patterns to create 5 unique segmented base designs.

    Very interesting technique. Did you consider making a floating bottom?

      I agree with you. Even a multi-segmented base is going to expand/contract less with humidity changes than larger rings above. I switched to floating bases several years ago.
