  • Hike with the fam up Pyramid Peak. This was a tough one as you gain almost 4,000 ft. to the peak. We took the Rocky Canyon trail up. Summit is 9,984 feet. We couldn't stay long at the top as the boys weren't feeling well (due to the altitude). They did amazing though. Awesome views at the top!

Oh, the boundless energy of small children. I climbed Pyramid and Ralston Peak in about 1956-58 with my younger brother and a friend about my age, lead by one of our Stanford Hill (Fallen Leaf Lake) neighbors and his two boys. Having also hiked up steep trails when I weighed over 315 lbs. (now 240 lbs at 6'4") I can appreciate the energy I must have had when I weighed just 180 to 190 lbs.
Thank you for taking me along on your hike.

Just thinking about all my hikes, I never injured myself despite doing some rather stupid solo hikes. My injuries occurred around our mountain cabin, once ripping my knees open running (it needed stitching by a neighbor doctor) and putting my food through a rotten board (that needed an x-ray and ace bandage). I could leap and jump down rocks and rundown high mountain trails but never did I injure myself. I had good balance back then. I lost the balance at age 32 when I hit my head walking up the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and suffered inner ear issues (that all caused lifelong tinnitus). Ah, being young again; enjoy your years with your children; treasure those years.

Me again. Hiking in the high Sierra Mtn with short pants I guess is normal in the 21st century and after the 1970s, but back in the 1950s, we always wore long pants and usually tough denims (jeans) and hiking books, as well as a hat or cap. It would have so easy to scrape one's knees or worse. We also started from an altitude of 6500 feet at which we had been living for several weeks, so we were very acclimated to the higher elevations.
