Boorowa Garbage

  • I’m chucking up an old MJE side loader this time, being the late 1990s International ACCO I discovered covering a small job in country NSW 7 years ago! I arrived in the small town of Boorowa early on a Friday morning, instantly spotting the rotating orange beacon of this truck in the distance as it moved along the main road of the CBD. At the time weekly garbage collection was handled in-house by the council itself, with a service schedule of just a single day covering the whole place. I was clueless on what truck was being used for the task, however I happily came across this cool machine, which originally spent its time in Cootamundra as a split bin truck. I guess once Cootamundra upgraded their fleet in the mid 2000s, this side loader became the Boorowa collection vehicle, which eventually travelled even further and became the Oberon collection vehicle! I’m pretty crazy about never getting one of these “DART” side loaders actually being used as a split truck... the only old trait that remains is how the bins are tipped at a greater height than normal.
The action is a little bit slow during the video unfortunately, but just being able to watch an older truck like this at work is still pretty sweet I reckon. A big thanks to the operator for being a top bloke and letting me tag along and video! Felt sorry for him though, because after that second last clip he stopped to have a chat and couldn’t get the truck started again - I was done at that point anyway so not sure how he went afterwards haha There’s a mix of old 140/240L bins getting collected, and looking back now I wish I thought to check out the age of some of the older ones, very likely from rear loading days, too bad I wasn’t curious enough back then. There was also a fortnightly recycling pickup done on Wednesdays, which I would’ve loved to have captured, given Elouera Recycling also ran an old MJE/ACCO for the job. For a number of years local Elouera was looking after all kerbside collections in both Boorowa and Young, but not overly long ago JR Richards took over. Oh and FYI Boorowa, Young and Harden merged to form Hilltops Council a few years back, another region hit by state amalgamations.

The extra box on the street side of the hopper leads me to believe that this truck had either a mono-dalve or a densifier which I have herd rumors of.

Wow what a great truck! Always been wanting to see the footage ever since I saw the pic on Flickr. Now it’s finally here! Just one question do you have any idea what that little box thing is on top of the hopper? (above the hydraulic tank) looks like some little box was very curious to what it is and what’s its purpose. I wonder is it its initial design or something else. Awesome video love the roar of the engine in the first clip great little truck with lots of character to it! Deffs a like and a fav!

Glad you'd been looking forward to this and enjoyed it mate. Gotta appreciate the old Cummins sound of this truck, even the different high pitch whine you get with the hydraulic pump running. Honestly can't tell you a great deal about the little box you're referring to, I'm quite stumped about it myself. I know the mono-valve split trucks which do 2 bins at once feature a box on the roadside for the diverter flap workings, but I know for a fact Cootamundra had split bins, so it doesn't make sense.

@AussieGarbo Fantastic video Mitch! Great to see that you got to film a vintage 1990s International Acco (before it was called an Iveco Acco). Love to hear that it was once a split bin truck. Speaking of that:
    1. Did you happen to get this truck (in any of the one councils that you mentioned in the description) working as a split bin truck i.e. doing waste and recycle bins together at once?
    2. Do you know if Alex (a.k.a. MacDonaldJohnstonFan) has any social medias (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, FaceBook)? The reason is; because, I would like to contact him and tell him to hurry up with the uploading of the Brisbane Single Pass Easter Waste/Recycle Collection👍👍. The last time he uploaded a video of the Single Pass truck was on January 12; and, I'm sure that you will agree with me that he needs to hurry up with the uploading because you even commented on that video, "... I'm looking forward to the proper garbage/recycle video, give us what we want Alex!!!" :)
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and answer my questions; Regards,
    BrissyQlder18.

      1) Unfortunately I didn't manage to get this truck doing split bins at anytime, I was 8+ years too late to achieve it and about 5 years too late for the last Cootamundra split truck. Just haven't had a great deal of luck with split trucks in general, apart from the Richards Compactors.
      2) Not sure if MJFan has social media pages, I'm sure he is on there somewhere. You'll have to wait as long as it takes for him to upload the video you desire, he'll get around to it eventually. I waited 3 years until he finally uploaded the Randwick videos he took of me on the job!

AussieGarbo I was wondering how whether you’d ever respond to my comment I posted about a month ago😉. But anyhows, thank you so much for your replies, I feel for you about not having good runs with finding split trucks😥😫😭🙏. However, I have got a special ‘treat’ for us garbo’s to view that I will be uploading tonight.
      EDIT:
