- In the conniving world of politics, even a professional shyster like Thomas Jefferson Johnson (Eddie Murphy) can find himself outmatched. After using name recognition to get elected, Johnson enjoys many of the same financial perks as other politicians. However, while investigating the connection between electric companies and cancer in young children, he unexpectedly develops a conscience. Unfortunately, fellow Congressman Dick Dodge (Lane Smith) isn't about to let him rock the boat.

This is an Eddie Murphy movie that didn't receive the recognition it deserved. Very underrated movie and is truer to the way American politics actually works.

This is not a comedy, but a reality. Not surprised that this film was not recognized. I guess someone in Congress looked up some dead presidents or made hints that unfortunate things happen.

This movie should be categorized as "Educational" so people can see why Congress is so close to a snake pit, and it's almost impossible to get anything done..
But I suppose it hits a little too close to home for that..

That does '' nothing '' in your view . Most of you just project your failures and limitations and frustration on the system . It's always the system to blame . Not you . Whatever ....

It made $86M worldwide, and it was made in 1992. How is it at all 'underrated'? I apologize, but 'underrated' is everywhere these days. It's like a bad verbal tick.
@@w.everett8860 this is in the context on today barley anyone talks about this movie today and that is a crime in my opinion so that’s why it’s underrated to me. Now yes it made money but it was panned by critics of the day and was pushed back by the often mentioned movies of which are too many to list here but anyone wants to can look up them selves. That year alone had 30 -40 movies that get mentioned all the time and that’s not dig at them but this movie has basically been blackballed that general public forgot it exists and it’s never on TV 📺 . This is why I always make sure to show this movie to those who haven’t seen it so it stays alive. also it’s weird that it never got blu ray release when other movies from that same year that made far less money 💰 did.
I'd call that controversial as opposed to underrated, but that's just me. Still a great movie, anyone who has an issue with it is taking both movies and politics too seriously.

Sheryl Lee Ralph's renaissance and her long overdue Emmy win brought me here. This movie is such an underrated classic. I remember it airing Cinemax when I was younger. Classic movie then and now. Ms. Sheryl continues to age backwards!!!
She is hilarious in this we loved her in it! and jokingly quote her and Eddie from this movie often

Truth about many politicians! Comedy makes us laugh, but deep down, I feel sad looking at the way "things work."
Eddie Murphy never disappoints. I love all the voices he can mimic. Great comedy but a lot of truthfulness in how crooked it is in our govt. Clean the swamp !

I really needed this tonight. I took my medicine and kicked back and melted right into the movie. It's a great example of the need to get out and vote for qualified representatives.
The Elections weren't broken, but have since been fixed! In my opinion , the people can vote any way that they want, the reported results are what SOMEONE wants them to be.

It's what happens when you're uploading a 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio as a 4:3 (traditional television) ratio. You get both pillarbox a letterbox formats at the same time creating a border around the picture.
One can see why it's not as famous today as some of Murphy's other movies. Still a worthwhile watch, though.

My father and I used to watch this when I was in middle school, we used to laugh about how ridiculously outlandish these scenarios were. I can still watch it and laugh, but it's an eerie uncomfortable sort of humor. This film has become a dark comedy. I can't believe what has happened.
They even got the change shiat right. It would have been scary if they mention Make America Great or something. This guy is basically George Santos.

The only unrealistic part about this movie, is the good hearted politician delivering on his word to the people! 😆 The corruption runs waaaaayyy deeper than what the movie shows.

This movie is dripping with everything 90s. From the genre and writing to the costume designs and music (especially the steel drums at the end). I was in my early 30s when this came out in theaters (1996), but am just discovering it now (5/15/24) even though I was a fan of Eddies back in the day. I appreciated the trip down memory lane in a movie I enjoyed more for the overall nestalgia then the movie itself. Worth at least one watch IMHO...

One of the best if not THE best satirical comedy I've ever seen. I e viewed this movie before but, had to vie it again. There are so many hysterical scenes but, the hunting scene is fantastic. Of, course, Eddie Murphy is terrific and so are the other familiar actors! Enjoy!

My sister and I watched this in the theater when it came out, and enjoyed it. It came out the same time as his more well-known 1992 film Boomerang. Both were playing at our theater, but this one had an earlier showtime.

wow such an underrated movie I loved how it was made, from the get go the way its shot is very good and the acting. Eddie murphies charms keep you captivated and the story was very well executed. Definitely on of my favourite films about corruption, another great one is the The Campaign with Will Ferrel. But I think this one might be better as it feels more believable.
