In this video I paint a portrait of this woman of color and I talk on some proprieties that egg tempera has. I try to apply these an the portrait and see how it gradually becomes a very pleasing to see piece of art. I also show some Fayum Portraits as examples of amazing painting that has used tempera as medium along with wax.

It is very satisfying to see the face emerge from a blank white canvas (or was it board). It is like watching a photographic image emerge, slow-motion, from the paper in the developing bath.

I am finding your painting of her makes her look born-again, from the original photo! just beautiful. Your channel is well named. I always see so much inner light in your work-it's inspired me to buy pigments, and a brush-- a brush I will use only for egg tempera.

Your reflections about your process are so valuable, Antonis. It models for me (for students) how I can approach a painting and explore the process of enjoying creating it. I often frighten myself while I’m painting and just see how badly I’m doing! 👹🤬. You are the reassuring teacher who looks over the shoulder and encourages the student. Thank you so much. 🌹❤️🌹 I’m becoming more interested in egg tempera watching your work. Will explore this medium more as soon as I’m able to.

Thank you, this video is an Eureka moment for me as an aspiring Ikon writer & Tempera artist, a wonderful reference, which has brought the Fayum techniques to life, unfortunately i am a perfectionist, whose approach to painting is more deliberate, seeking to recreate the reference faithfully, you have shown me to be more adventurous & less precise

I have to say that your egg tempera technique was a bit of a revelation. It's the most fun I have ever had with pigment powders and medium :)

It is nice to hear that you are humble.
You probably know that many people, especially the well-paid, stick their noses in the air and don't listen to anyone.
And your painting turned out wonderful!
Her right corner of the mouth, you lost her youth.
Anyone who wants to, understands your accent👌👍 Carsten

Bravo. Listening to your comments were a balm to my soul. It is wonderful to paint in tempera. it is not for everyone, way to tedious. I think that is what I love about it, you can sneak up on the end result. At a certain point it is joyous. Thanks for everything.

This is my favorite video that you have done. It is because you pulled back and showed your palette and how you mix and explained your basic approach of not worrying about 'exact color' accuracy, but work for the correct tone (lightness/darkness) and how you incorporate warm and cool colors. I like your narrations in general as you try to give some insights every time. Thank you!

To everyone watching, this is the best CZcams channel for Iconography hands down! When you get frustrated with iconography he uploads a video on Michelangelo or some other master to keep you excited. He doesn’t mind other mediums (I’m gonna try to get him to use water colors) Most others channels don’t answer comments and make you attend there school in order to learn more. Not here he answers them all, and all his lessons are free. Thank you Antonios and God bless

@@PaintingtheLight well you will be happy I have learned more than just something. I have learned how to properly draw hands, faces, halo placement, blending techniques with oil, 3/4 faces, how to copy anything, and make it larger. I could go on. Aside from the techniques, you introduced me to El Greco and made me take a second look at Botticelli, who has made it to my top ten list of painters I want to learn something from. For all you have taught me, You can consider me your semi disobedient student, who will always look for a way to get you to try painting an icon with watercolors. Thank you for everything.

@@PaintingtheLight I live in small town of 1,600 people in about the very middle of the state of New York, in the United States. There are more cows in the barn down the road then people that actually live here. Nice and quiet place to paint. Lots of stars at night. Far away from city’s lights. If you don’t mind taxes, it is perfect. How about you my friend?

May I ask you about material on which you have been painting in this given video.
The next questions are regard to the using of additional water to thin the prepared paint and how to correct the mistakes.

  • @Tt-t100
    @Tt-t100 Před 3 lety

Is it the 1:1 formula enough thin to avoid pealing or cracking? It seems to me a bit too thick, considering that tempera can have even proportions of 1:10, one egg by 10 water. Also I try to apply thin washes at the beginning so they can penetrate the board surface. I'd like to know your opinion about this matter. Thank you in advance.

your accent is really not a problem, but your vocabulary needs work (e.g. watch a lot of YT channels draw-mix-paint Andrew-tischler and mind-of-watercolor for native speakers who use the expressions you are groping for here)
