- Ready for a blast from the past? As you may know, Spanish has two past tenses: preterite and imperfect. It’s often tricky to know which to use when, since they both refer to actions in the past. Fortunately, several general guidelines exist to help you realize when to use preterite vs imperfect.
It’s also helpful to know which Spanish phrases trigger the use of either the preterite or the imperfect, so we’ll take a look at those later.

Normally, Spanish speakers do not say “Amé la película de ayer” as an equivalent to “I loved yesterday’s movie”. We say “Me gustó la película de ayer”, “Me gustó mucho la película de ayer”, “Me gustó muchísimo la película de ayer”, “Me gustó harto la película de ayer”, “Me gustó un montón la película de ayer”, “Disfruté la película de ayer”, “Me encantó la película de ayer”, “Me facinó la película de ayer”. Amar is a deeper personal feeling in Spanish unlike the general English “to love” (I love my girlfriend, I love horror movies”.)
This is the best video on CZcams on this subject. Easy to understand, good visuals, and kinda funny too 😅
There is one little error with the visual at 5:44 for Tu Comías tho lol
Thank you so much for letting us know! Also, we're really happy that you enjoyed the video!
How do you get to the article with the 25 exercises? (about 15:20 minutes) Tried clicking in the video on the picture and there was no link, and I don't see a link in the description. Thanks!

I’m wondering about the statement at 7:10. She says these are conjugations in the pretérite tense. Now I’m confused. The verbs she used were vivía, amaba and comía. Aren’t these imperfect tense!
I think she mean't to say imperfect.
yes, it’s an error
She said IMPERFECT. That is right! I do not see the mistake.
Could you say 'the last time I did something' and which tense would that be in?
The translation would be, la última vez que hice algo. And the tense would be preterite (also called simple past tense) "hice". It's preterite because it's a specific point in the past (as opposed to imperfect past "hacia" which doesn't have a definite end). I hope this helps.
The last time is La última vez, and If it is the last time, it has to be the preterit... one time and already done...past.
I'm so confused.. why did she say that it's preterite for imperfect on 7:10
Excatly! She does not say that!
Isn't it "conoci a mucha gente"? It says "conoci mucha gente" on the video. I'm confused.
Thank you for your feedback! Both can be used, while "Conocí a mucha gente" is the grammatically correct way of saying it, "Conocí mucha gente" can also be used in informal settings.
Says: tu comías
Text reads: yo comía
Thank you for letting us know, Carson! We'll make sure to check this for future videos.
"vosotros" not invited to the party
Is there a version of this where the host acts like they're speaking to adults? I'm sure there's a ton of good information in this video but I couldn't stand anymore than about 4 minutes of this excessively animated and unnecessarily manic presentation.
Don't like the sells job, the constant changing of size and swoop sounds. Like an ADHD person edited this. Plus there's an error in the preterite -ar nosotros form. -amos not -amamos
Thank you for your feedback! We'll make sure to take it into consideration for future videos!
Nothing could be more annoying than, well, you know!!!!!!!!!!
