  • Bassoon quartet: a contra, two bassoons and a mini bassoon - all played by one person (Polly Horton)! The piece Polly is playing is Mahler 1 (Movement 3) with the Amati contrabassoon playing the part of the double bass, the Puchner Model 23 playing the timpani's part, a Heckel 7000 playing 1st bassoon and the mini #bassoon playing the oboe's part! All arranged by Michael Gibbs. Enjoy!

I'm sure someone else has pointed out that this piece has some fairly strong minor key "Frére Jacques" vibes

Yep, that’s one of the themes that Mahler was inspired by in this movement

oooh....this makes me want to arrange something for two oboes, EH, bass oboe, alto bassoon, two regular bassoons, and contrabassoon. The possibilities are mindblowing.

Nice mini bassoon. That could possibly a tenoroon or an alto bassoon.

Do believe it’d be considered an alto bassoon (altoon?) in this case.

The Jils well considering the fact that contras cost $8000< , that’s not really a good idea. If you have the funds, sure, but not for most people.

@@lightisbetterthanlight566 speaking of light, lighten up, will ya! my comment was meant to be taken as a "light" hearted joke...I think even Mr. Incogitatus, the original poster, recognized my attempt at sardonic humor with my comment....the contra is one of those instruments that you just DON'T grow into...even as with the bassoon, the contra takes an incredible amount of breath control to sound even halfway decent: even if in most cases you are doubling the bass line, to be heard (and felt) during these passages with any semblance of musicality is no small feat...giving this instrument to a child that hasn't even reached junior high school yet would be a very frustrating experience...incidentally, even a marginal, new Amati contra costs around $9000 USD (they actually sound fairly decent and professional contra players buy them for back-up)...phenomenal new contras from Fox and Mollenhauer can cost well above $27,000...and brand new creme de la creme contras from the legendary Heckel company are in the stratosphere cost-wise...now do you see why my comment was to be taken more as a tongue in cheek flippant piece of advice?
