    It always amazes me that it does not matter what you watch on CZcams there is an argument between people. To anyone thinking about going to NYC just go and make up your own mind. I went in 2007 loved it so much went back 2008 and finances permitting will be going September 2010. It can be whatever you want it to be. Go and enjoy it, the people we met were friendly and helpful. Go on you know you want to!!!!!

    Thanks for the message. Always welcome feedback. With avenues, the voiceover is in the context of layout, so when it says avenues run from east to west, it means that east of 5th Ave is 6th Ave. Put an annotation in for this to avoid any confusion. And with the Rose Center, saw a lot of planets there and isn't astrology all in the stars?! ;-) Thanks for the tips re the Zagat Guide and the book.

    CORRECTION ON STREET & AVENUE DIRECTIONS: All in all a very informative video. Others may have corrected this but I did not want to scroll thru 1.5m comments. In Manhattan Avenues run North (UPTOWN) & South (DOWNTOWN), and streets run East & West not the reverse as stated. USEFUL TIP: On most of Manhattan the house numbers are on the north side of the street and even on the south side ( I lived in Manhattan for years before learning this, Duh! and it's great for orienting yourself when you get out of a subway and don't know which way is up). Also, the house or building numbers on streets are numbered east and west starting from from Fifth Ave., so 10 E. 59th st. will be between 5th Ave and Madison Ave and 10 W 57th St will be between 5th Ave. and Avenue of the Americas (also known as 6th Avenue). Numbers get larger as you go west to the Hudson River and East to the East River. Numbering system is very complex on the avenues so just check Waze or Google maps. In Queens the streets run north and south and avenues, drives , roads run east & west. Brooklyn is crazy so use map apps. I'm not familiar with Bronx or Staten Island. Good luck and enjoy the city but be wary of street hustlers and keep your handbags zipped and close to your body and your wallets in your side pockets (my wife is a native New Yorker and has had her wallet pinched twice). Macy's is great with huge variety, sales and generally good inventory and prices. I was there last December and the shoppers were from all over the globe and taking advantage of the low prices. My niece and her daughters come from Amsterdam with empty suitcase and go home full of clothes, computers, etc. after carefully removing packaging and tags to swindle Amsterdam customs. Macys is huge- I believe 2.2m sq. ft. or 205,000 sq. m. Wear comfortable shoes and beware of pickpockets especially when it's crowded around Christmas. Have fun and welcome to my fair city.

    Avenues go north to sound, and streets go east to west. Not what he said.

  • @hostelworld
    @hostelworld  Před 15 lety

    The video means in terms of layout, not direction ie 1st Ave is on the east side of Manhattan, then 2nd, 3rd Aves etc is west of here. Likewise with streets - north of 42nd street is 43rd and south of it is 41st street.

    As a native and life-long New Yorker I found this presentation to be quite good.
    One thing that is not addressed is that New York City is a difficult place to GO TO THE BATHROOM.
    Many years ago, there was a book called "Where To Go" and unfortunately, I can't locate it but travelers here should keep such a salient point in mind, that and to really see stuff here you have to be in good physical condition to WALK A LOT.

    1) Go to L and B pizzeria in Brooklyn, plus it is a few stops from Coney Island. 2) Try out Flushing Meadow Park. It is across the street from Citi Field and they did a scene in the park in the first Men in Black movie. 3) IF and ONLY IF you have extra time when you go on the Staten Island Ferry, take the S44 to the Staten Island Mall. I only suggest cause it is stupid proof to get back and forth cause the ferry is the first stop and the mall is the last stop and you get to see another borough

  • @Avars553
    @Avars553 Před 12 lety

    Avenues run north to south or south to north or both. Streets run east to west or both. Fifth ave divides Manhattan from east to west. So if you live say on 59 th st and 5th Ave the buildings will be in the single digits. If you go west the numbers increase with a 'W' added to it indicating your going west. 57 W 59th is close to 5th ave. 600 W 59th would be way across by the Hudson River.
