    I enjoyed your first American history series and American English narration. I am Japanese and Japan has been very deeply influenced by America but American history looks very complicated to me, so your video is pretty clear, easy to understand, and very educational. Thank you for creating such a good video.

    For anyone confused about the out of 43 ranking. This was before Trump when there was 44. And Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th, so the same person counts as 2 separate ones. So only 43 people had been president at the time.

    I'm not too sure about the "ranking" system...

    • @proof4469
      @proof4469 Před 7 lety +45

      It's not really that I disagree with the rankings (no opinions about Lincoln's rank by the way). The problem is that people will certainly disagree about the rankings in the comments and just ruin the video. Also, it is probably tough for the creators to decide on the rankings too.

    • @proof4469

    • @proof4469
      @proof4469 Před 7 lety +10

      My point is that subjective opinions should not belong on a history video as they are not facts and these "rankings" tend to bring up unnecessary comment wars.
      Did it ever occur to you that rankings are worthless?
      What makes a subjective opinion of a commoner different from those with a PhD in political science or history? All subjective opinions are equal as they all have an equal chance to be wrong; opinions are opinions because you can't "prove" it definitely.
      There is no 100% valid way to measure and quantify presidential competency; *it is OPINION*. An expert opinion is just as valuable and useless as those from the masses. Your "19 categories" is useless as it too is subject to bias and it is only opinion. What if some people value something of a president that is not in the 19 categories? Who makes these decisions? Who votes? Are these people conservative or liberal? What are the personal backgrounds of these "experts" that voted and how does it affect the ranking votes? How do you measure that 100% accurately?
      *Why do you put so much faith into something that has too many variables and cannot be controlled?*
      Also, did it ever occur to you that experts are oftentimes wrong? For example, experts said DDT was 100% safe for decades before they said "whoops."
      Why are you so fanatically protective of this ranking so much? Who are you?
      *Can you actually make a real argument for once?*

    • @proof4469
      @proof4469 Před 7 lety +2

      "All presidents were voted on by historians and political scientists. So
      people that actually achieved more than complaining in a CZcams comment
      section."
      -Ted52
      Who started the insults? Really? You were the one that barged in from nowhere saying that our opinions are worthless because we are not historians and political scientists, as if their opinions are inherently more valid and worthy than ours are (even if opinions are ultimately equal of value regardless of superficial "credibility"). Then you just dismissed our opinions by belittling us as people that did not achieve anything and we are just lowly mobs that are dumb and deserve no opinion. How more condescending can you get?
      So first, you vexed me because of your inability to understand what subjective opinions are, and why they are worthless regardless of credibility and "expertise". Second, you insulted us first. Third, you are turning the table pretending as if you are the victim. You deserve all the hate you can get.
      *Also, you don't have to like your own comments. I can see that.*

      Grant disagreed with the adversarial stance taken by the Army against the Indians. It was General Sherman who appointed Sheridan and pursued aggression towards them, and rightfully so after Hancock was far too lenient. The Lakota and Cheyenne were launching raids on settlements and wiping out entire families to almost no retaliation. Then Sherman replaces Hancock with Sheridan in command of the region and all of a sudden it's "poor Indians."

    Factual correction: Lincoln did not free 'all southern slaves by executive order', as stated in the video: The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the rebellious (Confederate) states. It did not apply to Southern states that remained in the Union-Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, & Delaware.
    The rankings in this video are entirely subjective and intended to provoke interest and debate.They're taken from the 2010 survey by the Siena College Research Institute. You can find out more about it here: scri.siena.edu/us-presidents-study/ "Previous SCRI surveys of U.S. Presidents have been reported in Presidential Studies Quarterly, The New York Times, Washington Post, recent scholarly reviews of the presidents, and national news networks." It was packed with a lot historical illustrations and paintings. Each succeeding volume had a vibrant color different from the previous volume.

      Let's face, old Georgie wasn't, how you say, qualified for the job. He didn't know really anything about politics a few arguably loosely understood the economy and diplomatic agenda. However, he was the most popular man in the country, a great peacemaker, and a figure of union. The only thing he had to do was to make sure the United States stayed neutral, peaceful, and wealthy, and make sure the whole damn thing didn't collapse off the bat.
      So yes, he was a great president, one of the but not the best.

    • @ludicrus32
      @ludicrus32 Před 7 lety +11

      Kate x "The only thing he had to do," are you joking? The United States was neither neutral, peaceful, or wealthy when he became President. The North and South were already barking at each other, there would be TWO rebellions he had to put down, and the populace was fervently gunning to either invade Canada or help the French in their revolution. George Washington was tempted time and time again to take the reins of power as a dictator, but he resisted every single time. He led the United States through a period of great uncertainty, when the government could barely pay its own bills and the new American currency was practically worthless, and he turned all of that around.
      His strength of character, his principles, and his commitment to the new republic echoed throughout American history, and no President *dared* break the precedents he set until FDR, and even then, it was only under dire circumstances. A struggling young nation on the frontier of civilization could not have wished for a better leader from such inauspicious beginnings, and he safeguarded us from the very worst kind of strongmen that so plagued other nascent democracies like those of South America and in France.

Taking away the Central Banks led to the first economic disaster in America, that's why he disnt run for a third term. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Indians and Javkson unconstitutionally removed them from their land in the most cruel way. Also a funny side note about how much of a clown Jackson was. He through a big MAGA inauguration party at the White House and his followers trashed the place and he had to sneak out of the back. Oh bbn yah, what a hero. He also murdered 2 innocent Spanish soldiers to hint down slaves in Spanish Florida. Andrew Jackson was a war criminal, a regular criminal, should have been impeached and destroyed the economy. I'd hazard a minor quibble about the Madison description. The US was, by any reasonable standard, the aggressor in 1812, opportunistically capitalising on Britain being tied up in the more important Napoleonic Wars to make a landgrab.
    Far from it being to protect American rights at sea, the case for war was retroactively changed to that of impressment once it became known that Britain had already repealed the Orders in Council 1807 that America had claimed as their reason for it. America was on the warpath and did not want to negotiate the matter peacefully, despite the British already having made concessions and willing to make more (as evidenced by the fact that impressment, the retroactive casus belli, was repealed before the war's end rather than as the terms of peace).

    • @EpichistoryTv
      @EpichistoryTv  Před 7 lety +5

      I think I remember this being an essay question at university! I think you have a reasonable point of view, but I would put more emphasis on British provocations (Chesapeake affair etc.) in putting America on the warpath, and creating a desire for war amongst a young nation very sensitive about insults to its standing. I think the potential land-grab was completely opportunistic, but within the context of intolerable infringements on America's status as an independent nation.
