  • This is a review of a popular re-invention by Godox. The VSA-19K or 19 degree spotlight attachment for Bowens mount LED mono lights. I show how I use these spotlights to create a more dynamic shot, including creating the perfect room tone.

      Keying your subject 2 stops higher than the background makes sense. Even in the official resolve tutorials you see them adding a mask to a persons face to bring the exposure up. Why not just just bring up the exposure with a light in the actual production itself! Smart thinking.

    What was so amazing about Source Four Lekos? Lekos or more accurately ellipsoidal lights have been around for a lot longer than that. I remember them from first learning about theater lights in the early 70's and they were common back then.
    But yes, bowens mount lekos attachments are great game changers for small to midsize productions as well as independent content creators. The lekos along with bowens mount fresnel attachments allow you to diversify your lighting tools for a modest cost since it is assumed you already have the light. Well maybe not too modest a cost for the lekos attachment at $500 but very useful.

      facts. i have not yet been on a shoot that does not have source 4s on the truck. i too learned about them in university, in our theatre dept. that and the use of par64 cans, two of the most versitle tools ever.

    • @michaelcox7656
      @michaelcox7656 Před 2 lety +1

      Leko itself is a brand name. ETC will not call Source 4s Lekos--they're "ellipsoidal spotlights". The source 4 is one of the only perfectly engineer lighting instruments in a gaffers kit.
      Funny that a 750 tungsten s4 cost about $350.

    I'll use an ellipsoidal sometimes to just pick out an actor's face in a dim ambient that could not be possible otherwise. It demands a static blocking but good for a wide establishing, before we get into CU's and that forgiveness.

    when it comes to lighting: harder! harder!
    freal thoe, the panels are putting me to sleep w that flat wash look. caravaggio beams ftw
    btw: godox sz150r, "cheap" light, but i like it. usin it w a forza fresnel, but looks like one of these godox vsa spot lenses would be more powerful and narrow the beam
    since the biggest weakness of the godox sz150r is the output (approx 60w in rgb/hsi) , would one of these vsa lenses make the output appear closer to a 120w fixture (understandably w a narrower beam)?

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  Před 2 lety

      Source four is 622fc from a 3m distance but pulls 750W of power. So compare that to the specs from this video 🤙🏼 Also tungsten only.

    • @creativegreats6924
      @creativegreats6924 Před 2 lety

      @@JustinPhillip what's 622 fc mean? 750w is way more power than the godex light ? Also ...I see you do grip work in la . So I wanna ask you what is the Advantages of a 1200 (1.2k) hmi like an Ltm cinepar 1200 vs the aputure 1200d . One advantage I would think is throw of hmi and how strong the beam is .

    • @connorkenway6845
      @connorkenway6845 Před 2 lety

      @@creativegreats6924 watt =/= brightness. LED is more effective as hmi, hmi ist more effective than tungsten. Aputure 600d should be as bright as a 1,2 hmi. And the 1,2 hmi four times as bright as tungsten (5k). The Problem is, that the Arrimax reflectors (as well as the aputure ones too) are just aweful. So you need to compare fresnel to frensel etc. And you shouldn't trust the manufacturers website

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  Před 2 lety +2

      the fresnel you cant control the same way. No iris, no perfect circle, no shutters to cut & shape the light, no gobos. And most fresnels will have a wider spread even on spot. (i.e. more spill, thats why most fresnels have barn doors)

      Videographers are always after softer light, cinematographers tend to appreciate harder light more. (I know what a cinematographer is but I’m using it to more easily differentiate.)
