As an adoptee, you are told over and over that you are special, that you were chosen. At the same time, you are always wondering why, if you are so special, that your birth mother gave you up. I am glad that there is someone in the world who wants to, and is able to help answer some of those answers. And so sorry for the mother feeling she had no choice but to give up a beloved 18-month-old toddler. EPalsson I feel terrible for Geoffrey, but also, that was the Mums doing. How could a man look at that child without seeing his wife’s cheating while he was away fighting for his country? The child would have represented betrayal and probably would never have been loved by the Father anyway. I feel like with being given away, he had the best chance at a normal childhood, it just unfortunately didn’t go that way :( I hope he is able to heal now.

i can understand that the husband didn't want the child. his wife not only cheated on him, but had another man's baby. and then to raise it out in the open was another slap to his face; it's like she's not even ashamed of her actions. i don't feel sorry for the mom; i do, however, feel sorry for the boy and the husband. the mom was selfish and it was because of her selfishness that caused all this heartbreak. this wasn't a stepson the husband had to learn to accept; this was a baby his wife had with another man while they were married.

Geoffrey being ripped from his family at almost two years old is so tragic. That’s old enough to cause a severe impact on a child and maybe contributed to him not being adopted until the age of 7, who knows. I hate to think of what his life must’ve been like that he’s blocked it out until then. Top it off with not feeling loved until he was grown and met the woman he ended up marrying. Thank God for that.

it's difficult in that time period. a woman's identity and livelihood was tied to the men in her life. to wind up making that heartbreaking choice, you have to understand the times. at that point, her husband returned from war and returned as head of household. it is clear he had strong influence over the family and wasn't accepting of any compromise or outcome besides her completely giving the baby up for adoption. it seemed the biological dad was either unknown man from a one night stand after the dancing event or if he wasn't unknown, then he certainly didn't want anything to do with his son since the baby stayed with mom the entire 18 months.
had she chosen to become single mother, she might not have had resources. husband cuts her off from funds and forbids her from having contact with the two older sons. she might not be able to get a decent job if potential employers would view her the same as unwed single mother with illegitimate child. she would've needed to find another place to live. and again, the issue of single mother might come up. some places didn't rent to single mothers.
her own family might've not rejected her had she chosen to leave the husband. some families did disown daughters in the vein of "you chose to leave your husband. don't come back here for money/you're not living here with us." or "you chose adultery. you've brought shame to his family and ours. how could you." and didn't want that stigma. families literally did consider the daughter as dead and would tell people that when she went away.
i've heard of stories of women who did choose their child and ended up homeless with the baby or ended up living on the very rough side of town with not enough to provide for their young child-- clean water, food, shelter, warmth, babysitter etc. because they didn't have any support and there weren't a lot of government entities to help in those days, these women just had love to give but sometimes it isn't enough when it comes to life and death. all these women fought to keep their baby and struggled until it became clear life was not getting better and they knew it was no circumstance to raise a starving cold child, that her child deserved a chance at something better. sometimes, love in the face of no other good options with the prospect of poverty meant giving the baby away and pinging her hopes that the child wouldn't end up in care long term and that a great loving family would adopt immediately.

None of you seem to understand or at least acknowledge the fact that Bessie cheated! Spending all that time away and to return to your wife and family and find that your wife cheated and had a child with another person. FFS, who cares that she thought for one instant there was dancing, laughter, fun blah blah blah. The fact is, a person went off and every day risked their life in a tragic war with the full knowledge that they may never see their loved ones again and then to return and find that the person they loved the most had a child with someone else is one of the greatest betrayals. Not Jeffery's fault, and for sure not the soldiers fault for feeling betrayed, but DO NOT feel sorry for the mother.

yes. I just cannot understand why was so much suffering necessary, the man was obviously deprived for the rest of his live just because someone was stupid. Our friends have one child of a different father (it's a quite sad story) and the child is just loved by everyone, incl. his non-biological father.

These all made me cry. I found out I was adopted at 5 years old. From then on, I searched for 60 years before I found my 2 half sisters. What a blessing they have been. We've missed so many years of not being together. Unfortunately our Mom died in 1998 so I never got to meet her. I inherited my Mom's love of trees. She carried a sketchbook in her handbag and would sketch when she found a pretty tree. I too have a love affair with trees, sketching and painting them in most of my artwork. My adoptive family never encouraged my love of creating beautiful drawings and paintings.
