I was thinking of my dad John today. This song came to mind & realized they’re saying JONES, not John. All this time thought it said John. Dad was slow walking, slow talking. May he RIP. We are blessed & blissed.
The guy in the middle of the three is Earl Carroll. He was lead singer of the Cadillacs, Ie Gloriia, Speedo, Zoom. Earl toured for almost 20 years as one of the Coasters.
Yeah, he replaced the original lead singer. Years later , the original lead rejoined the group for a PBS Do Wop special. However, in 57 and 58, Earl performed only with the Cadillacs. He was also in the Alan Freed movie Go Johnny Go with the Cadillacs.
When I hear this song it reminds me of my best friend Jan when we were growing up. We have been good friends since 1955 and had a ball growing up. The Coasters were one of our favorite groups.
Black music has always been the most influential music. Bravo to all those musicians that would have had to deal with prejudice throughout their life and careers. They defined future music and are still the most influential contributors.
wow. They didn't have a hi hat or any count in to the chorus in the playback tape so they had to wait till AFTER the downbeat to start singing! I never would have thought they'd do that cuz... you can just add a hi hat to the music and know when to come in. Those lead in notes (and then a...) are what makes the chorus so great. This tune is so unusual. Don't make songs even close to the 60s and 70s anymore. People back then CRAFTED the chords, melody, vibe, everything. Back when it was all about the music, not visuals.
I grew up in the 80's, my dad always played the Coasters and they played them fairly regularly on the local oldies channel, mainly Charlie Brown, but I would hear this from time to time and thought it was hilarious as a kid! They were on a PBS special in the late 80's we taped and watched over and over again, I thought Posion Ivy was great too.
I had three Coasters LPs: listen to: Zing went the Strings, Run Red Run, Little Egypt, Searching, Poison Ivy, Girls Girls Girls, And of course Yakety Yak ‼️ .... oh too many to mention ....
@@tacogillespie4561 He does the best he can to keep the Coasters legacy alive. He has a pretty good lineup as far as sound. The Del Vikings appeared on Do Wop 52 and Do Wop Live in the 90s. Their original lead singer was deceased, so his son did the lead on Whispering Bells. He was very good. In all, these Do Wop specials brought back many of the old groups but many original members had passed away. The substitutes did a pretty good job . There are some clips on U Tube.
That's the wonders of the world we live in now. You can look it up on wikipedia, find who did the original then go to youtube or spotify to listen to it.
Just for the purpose of historical perspective. The Coasters started their career several years before Ray Stevens. Along Came Jones was a Coasters hit in the summer of 1959 , Ray Stevens had his first hit 2 years later. In 1969, 10 years after Coasters, Stevens had a hit with Along Came Jones. Coasters and Stevens of course made a career of similar styled songs, arrangements and humor. They were all wonderful to watch in live performances.
I'm 53 and i can't finded this group okay at all okay and I'm 53 okay letting y'all know but i still 😢love listening to this music okay letting y'all know okay goodnight
@@0olong I see what you mean. They were singing live here and lost the tempo after the "And Then" sequence but it came out pretty good except for the ending being cut. The record version is on U Tube and you will hear what they actually meant to say.

Buck Owens did a much better version of this. It is really funny with his drummer Jerry Wiggins, at the time married to the beautiful Susan Raye, doing the some side voices.
Surely you are kidding. Comparing the Coasters to Buck Owens is a slap in the face of the originals. No one but you probably ever heard Buck Owens' version. I have never heard the second rate Owens' version. He only had 2 hit songs in his life. Act Naturally was one. Tiger in My Tank I think was the other. This is most definitely not a country song. Lieber and Stoller wrote this for the Coasters. Or his other "hit" might have been Tiger By The Tail. I hated his stupid TV show and I left the room when he was on Hee Haw. The only other group that does this song justice is Sha Na Na in a skit on U Tube.
50 years ago we had great music & shitty cameras.
Now we got great cameras.
And thennnn.....

Cannot find music like this anymore, the Coasters were very talented group.
Lieber and Stollar wrote their songs. Great combo
This is actually a live version and not a lip-sync. Sounds great to me and reminds me of being about 13 years old and just lovin' rock n'roll music.
me too
This is the first time I heard this live And it proves just how great their voices were
Man I liked those guys. We need more of what they had in this world of woe.
Will provide it for you "1858-1858 Top 10 Countdown" All the years are counted down in the Top 100 charts to the Number one. Enjoy
The "Bass Man" is phenomenal!
These guys were great!! They did pure novelty songs and gave tem credit!
The Coasters were the greatest! I'll bet they were Leiber & Stoller's favorites, and they are mine, too.
That “slow talking jones” gave me chills lol
Always loved The Coasters as a kid. Had the 45; so long since I heard this actually forgot some of the lyrics, so thanks for this!
The guy in the middle of the three is Earl Carroll. He was lead singer of the Cadillacs, Ie Gloriia, Speedo, Zoom. Earl toured for almost 20 years as one of the Coasters.
I thought he looked familiar! Thanks for confirming that.
I wander if they ever performed "Speedo".

Ruthann Brafford What about Jan? No Head No Backstage Pass, Jan? Or is it Ken Jones Jan?
Mine too! You are Ruthanne Tavernia from Yonkers?
Wish Ruthanne would answer this. I'm all intrigued now. Come on, what's the story with Jan or Jans?
Please
I really have always loved this one- it’s so much fun! A laugh, a giggle, a smile always occurs, every time.
I always love songs that tell a story you can picture the whole way through
I just heard this on the radio. I've always loved this song. :)
Love this band!
This is one of my favorite songs!
They played at the NCO club when I was in the army at Ft. Sill in 1968 and they were great.
This classic song should be featured in the new movie FREE STATE of JONES!!
The Clown Princes of Rock are still the greatest!
Coasters were so great!!!!
R&b with a country twang. Awesome. Thanks.
When you listen to this song think of the world and the news so true jones may be the lord think about
Try Gary Cooper, Jones is Gary Cooper.
I just watched the movie, "Along Came Jones" on youtube." I saw it many years ago when I was young.
BAD ASS, SAW THIS IN SANTA CRUZ 1985, SO SO GOOD,,
Oh man I love ❤️ this!!
Staple on my radio show
Watching from Australia
Hadda be after 1961 cause Earl “Speedo” Carol of the Cadillacs is singing with them.
I get a kick out of these guys....
