Why YOU SHOULDN'T Turn your Levels Past 0db

  • Having control over each individual speaker is a great feature to have. Speaker levels allow you to dial in your audio levels, but a lot of people may confuse them as a volume knob! This video demonstrates why you should be careful turning your speaker levels too high and the problems it will cause you if you're not careful!

    I think the biggest issue is people forget the the individual channel volumes are there for fine tuning so you’ll get the most out of your system and is not intended to blast your speakers at max channel level because you can end up introducing distortion into the mix which is not good for the speakers, like wise with a subwoofer the gain control on a powered subwoofer isn’t used to turn your subwoofer as loud as it can go it’s for fine tuning say you set your subwoofers gain to half way and it’s downing out your main channel speakers you back the gain down a bit to where everything sounds even and one is not drowning out the other.

    I never seen this video until now. For about a year even after I had my room calibrated a year ago. I notice that I was not getting effects from ceiling speakers I use for atmos. This was sending nuts. I heard you and others talk about how atmos speakers do wonders. I had spent a lot of money upgrading my man cave. I wasn't feeling good about atmos. I did understand about clipping. I know I didn't listen to my movie at high levels any way. Two nights ago, I was playing around with my system I did turn my ceiling speakers to the high 12db. just to what hear what I was missing. Of course, my avr vol. was set low. I was amazed how that change how my movies sound. I did adjust them back down to what they were before. I did change them to +4.0 db. on my left and +5.0 on my right. Although I just seen this video, I wish I would seen it earlier. If other youtuber would have said something about this earlier, it would have saved me some time. Thanks for video on subjects like this.

    I have a marantz sr 6015 and I'm guessing that it is the channel level adjust and not the test tone channel level adjust. And for some time now I have been turning the channel level adjust to most of my speakers to the plus side and with some content it sounded fine, with a pretty good blend in sound. But lately I've been keeping it at 0 or turning down to the negative side about -3 to -6 and although I have to turn the volume up a little more, it actually sounds better. I was listening at -15 to -13 but now I have to set the volume at -11 to -8 to get the sound level that I like to listen to. But I've never listened at 0. Thanks for the video it confirmed what I just discovered last week.

      @Kpaceguy  Před 11 měsíci

      You should be setting it once and never touching it afterwards. If you need more volume you can use the volume control to turn up all speakers at the same time at the same level of adjustment

    I have my KEF LS50Ms set to +0.5db, and my REL sub is falt. My AVRs max output is 95watt. I normally max out for personal listening around -10.db
    Im looking at getting a better AVR with at least 110w or 120w to do surround sound. 10:49

    • @pastaman6099
      @pastaman6099 Před 11 měsíci +1

      120 vs 95 is only a 1 db difference you won't even hear it. Unless you're actually hearing clipping, -10 is 10x (a whole magnitude) less than your AVR's limit. Your AVR is completely fine.

    Hi Kpaceguy. Your youtube made me look at the manual for my Marantz NR1711. As is typical, in the index under volume, it does not relate well enough to what I see on the TV say anything
    about "Limit", and "Limit" is not even in the index. The default is 0. If the highest level for any speaker is above 0, should the Limit be reduced? Can you discuss please?
    Also, I changed my "Scale" to the " -79.5 dB - 18 dB " like you use. After I did that, FOR A SHORT TIME, the volume level on the TV showed BOTH values overlaid on each other i.e. -22 (as the AVR shows) and 60. Now the TV will only show e.g. 60. I can live with this but guess there's more fiddling to be done (:-)

    I have my level on my denon 3800 in the negative side( speaker level) after caliberation but under options menu I have set all my speaker levels to plus 4 and some to even plus 6 , but I use the volume at about 42 percentage only, is this cause for concern or is it OK??

    For people using just a receiver and no amps the rating of that receiver is based on two channels, when pushing 5+ speakers they are getting way less watts so wouldn't some then need to be over 0?

    • @Kpaceguy
      @Kpaceguy  Před 6 měsíci

      Sometimes, you have to go over 0, even with external power. It's ok. Just remember that anything above 0 means you're that many decibels of max volume when you turn the receiver to max volume and that's when you have to be careful

  • @BrendanEvansX

    Hey man, I have my volume on a positive scale and my average volume is usually around +47db and my individual levels for all my 7 bedlayer speakers are at +7.0db while the 4 heights are at +7.5db. Subwoofer remains at +4.0db. Is this alright or should I lower something?

    • @Kpaceguy

  • @pastaman6099
    @pastaman6099 Před 11 měsíci

    eh, ive had worse results from overpowering than clipping. Clipped signals at a super low volume barely makes the speakers go anywhere near even their xmax. Overpowering will straight up fry the voice coil, AND send it past xmech. While I was testing out subwoofer drivers for my DIY builds, I've had to go to a different driver that actually works well with my Behringer EP2500, lmao. Thankfully the fried drivers were very cheap and I sent back the ones I didn't damage, and I'll try replacing the coils in the ones I damaged to see if that restores them. Either way, the better driver completely annihilated it without any break in for only twice the price so I'll use that one.

    My onkyo dose the opposite it doesn't let me turn the volume to 0db it dose it automatically. Even tho it doesn't let me I know all my speakers are level matched. But I know my Yamaha in my bedroom let's me turn the volume to 0db and it doesn't go past 0db when I'm calibrating it

      @@Kpaceguy yeah I mean idk why the onkyo doesn't let me set the volume by itself to 0db but my Yamaha definitely lets me so everything in my Yamaha is below 0db everything is reading 75db and subs are reading 85db.
      But my onkyo is also in some what of a bigger space. So my left speaker was reading 1+ and my center was reading +3 and my right speaker was reading +0 and my surrounds where reading both +1 and my height speakers where both reading +4 since they where farther from my listening position and everything is reading 75db except for my right speaker it was reading 76db everything else was fine and subs where reading 80 db
