  • WYE VALLEY AND FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING RUARDEAN, THE PLUDDS AND RUARDEAN WOODSIDE
"Ruardean, the Pludds and Ruardean Woodside”
    Filmed 31st August 2018
    Post-production completed 14th July 2019
The village of Ruardean provides, as far as I’m concerned, some of the best views of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. I visit the village to enjoy a walk, which makes the most of the wonderful vistas. My journey takes me around the northern ridges of the Forest of Dean, with some lovely, quiet and tranquil hamlets and villages, including the Pludds and Ruardean Woodside…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Ruardean, Readings, Horse Lea, the Pludds and Ruardean Woodside. This is part of the series of films shot in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

I really enjoyed this Patrick and the Bear story was very interesting, you certainly are extremely talented and have much knowledge regarding the places you visit which must take a lot of research so I appreciate the work that goes into all your videos which clearly keeps us all glued to the screen wanting more. Thank you for sharing, Enjoy your journeys and stay safe...Vivien 😊👍👍

Thank you Vivien. I do spend a lot of time researching online where I've been walking, hopefully the information I find is correct, although on the odd occasion it may not have been. Glad my work produces results that keep you wanting to see more. Many thanks. Cheers, Patrick :)

We love your films, especially those in The Forest of Dean, and even better this time as we live in Ruardean just behind the pub - we hope you enjoyed a drink there! Your film really showed off the beauty of the area and it was great to see the views from the ridge above our house - we are spoilt by incredible views from our village. By the way if you had headed down Eddy’s Lane you would have come across a worked mine recently opened up in the lane. A flashback to the mining history of the area.

Thank you for your lovely comments, nice to know I had been near your home when I was in Ruardean last year filming this. As I mentioned in my film, I think you have some of the best views in the Forest. I didn't get into the Malt Shovel in the end sadly as it wasn't open by the time I had finished my walk, so I guess it must close after lunch and then open again in the evenings. Many thanks once again for your kind comments and for taking the time to watch. Cheers, Patrick :)

Not a bad church that eh Frank, you may have noticed several churches that I've visited in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean with similar types of steeple. Not sure where that horse ended up, but I reckon he got to the pub before me! Thanks as always Frank and Lee for your lovely comments and for watching. Cheers, Patrick :)

They have now taken away all the hedge & trees at the bottom of the church yard & the views are amazing. On a clear day you can see the Welsh Mountains.

How delightful, I will be looking at more of your lovely travels. I have lived at the top of Cinderford for the past 31 years, interesting you mentioned "Who killed the bears" I used to know the people who lived at Little Marstow farm, down Catshill in Ruardean, they told me it was in their farmyard where one of the bears was cornered and cruelly murdered, I don't know if they still live there now though. Thank you .

@@solitaryrambler The bears were killed by Cinderford and Littledean people read the charge sheet. Nothing to do with my village.

You sure managed to fit an awful lot in when you visited the forest for your anniversary. I had heard that bear story never realised it occurred there, it was really interesting. Was the horse off too the pub? Lovely as always thanks for your time and effort and hope you are keeping well and rambling on.

Yes I had actually shot footage for 27 films last year around the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean, so that was a real achievement for me. Getting towards the last half a dozen or so to edit now! I don't know where that horse ended up as I didn't see it again, but I'm sure he was making his way to the Malt Shovel! :) Thanks as always for your lovely comments and for watching. Cheers, Patrick :)

❤️🙏🏼That was such a brilliant film & brought back so many memories. I used to walk my dogs up to the Beeches & was shocked what had happened to the once so lush forest. I lived on The Pludds untill 1970 & then moved to Sweden.
I must confess my Grandfather Frank Hopkins was the man from Drybrook who got fined for killing The Bear! I have the papers in Sweden to show it.
Im born a Forester & we are very special people!

Lovely video Patrick! I was actually raised in Ruardean and still live their in the same house today and I really enjoyed watching an outsider enjoying my local area! When my nan was a child Ruardean used to be the most lively of villages around where the villages and loads of shops as the coal carts had to go through Ruardean to got south or north depending on where the mine where! If you’re ever visiting the local area anytime soon I’ll happily show you a few more places and show you were the old sweet shop and the old ice cream shop used to be and tell you about how a wild boar broke into our primary school 😂 in the meantime I’ll enjoy the rest of your vlogs 😊

Nice one Will, nice to see a member of Ruardean community watching this film I made back in 2018 😊 I made lots in the Forest that year. I'm not too much of an outsider as I'm a Gloucestershire man originally and I've family (albeit distant) in Coleford and Lydney. I was staying in Mitchell Troy near Monmouth for a week when I shot this particular film, and it was a real joy coming to Ruardean, as well as the other places in the Forest, to film this. Many thanks for watching and for all your kind comments. All the best, Patrick 👍

Ruardean looks to be a beautiful village, Patrick. That is interesting where you mention about those early troubles in the place and fines having to be issued. The church is a lovely and quite historic building and that amazing tower really stands out in the village. Looking at the area nowadays, it's incredible to think that there was mining industriesat one time. A pity too, about the closure of the pubs in these rural places. Well, you had lovely weather on this walk and the scenery of the surrounding area is gorgeous. Many thanks, Patrick.

Ruardean is infamous for the "Who Killed the Bears" story. I remember being a bit concerned about mentioning it here, but on the other side of the coin I felt it would have been wrong not to mention it as it is an important piece of Ruardean's history. Glad you enjoyed this Ffranc, thanks as always for commenting and for watching 👍

No criticism intended - just advice to anyone retracing Patrick's route.
Seek out the topograph in Eddy's Lane and actually wander around the Pludds. It's a place you only go there if you want to go there. It's not on the way to anywhere else. Wonderful.A place where people let reign to their own desires. Quirky and in my opinion charming; and the views ---amazing.

I must do this walk Patrick, ( I only just found your site ) for 2 reasons, it looks like a good walk & not far from Monmouth where I live, plus my Paternal grandmother Alice Cordelia Verry was brought up here 1881-1956, (buried in Drybrook churchyard under Yapp) her father William Price Verry 1854-1914 was a Bootmaker here they lived at Ruardean Hill, possibly the Morse. My dad did mention there is some link we have to the Horlick's family, I've never managed to find out about it, I think they lived very close to my family. Maybe there is grave in the church yard to see. I like doing family tree research but it is very time consuming. John Yapp

I really enjoyed this one , I was always interested in the story Who Killed the bears, many years ago maybe about 30 I met two ladies singing in a pub folk night and they sang a song called who killed the bears I wish I could get a copy of the song , I can't remember there names but I think the one singers name was Joss or Jass maybe you have heard of them or the song.
