Great discussion PJ, I was thinking those small differences don’t matter too much for Kwikset but then you reminded me of the rounded bottoms so yeah that’s a big reason right there. Also didn’t realize the OEM Schlage pins are nickel silver! After learning about SFIC I’ve tried to be conscious of key vs pin metals. Thanks for making this 😊 #lockboss

I have a OEM KwiKset pining kit,and OEM Schlage pinning kit. They are the two brands I rekey the most. They are smaller so easier to carry and have extra pockets keep tools in. Most .005 and .003 don’t have a lot of extra room for rekeying tools like tweezers, followers and other tools like the Big Bro for dumping master pins. If I have to rekey other brands of locks, I grab the Schlage kit for rekeying tools and one of the universal kits to rekey other brands. I have both .005 and .003 and find the .003 better. But when you get equipment from retired or retiring locksmith you’ll eventually get both sets. When you do the rekeying inside the building do yourself a favor and bring two pinning mats. One to work on and one to put under your pinning kit so you don’t scratch table tops and keeps the kit from sliding around on smooth surfaces. #Lockboss

I prefer to use OEM for Schlage and Kwikset. I also have a 0.003 kit as well for those "other" locks. Also, of course, Medeco. ASSA,, Abloy, etc. Kits are required to work on those locks as a "High Security" #lockboss. I think you covered the topic quite well PJ. We can overlook your "flub" on the first call as diameter for length.

#Lockboss. I never knew the difference between 003 and 005 until I started watching your old videos. For Kwikset I always use OEM, for Schlage I also predominantly use OEM. But now that I know the difference I think I have to get a 003 kit, currently I own 3 005 kits and no 003. Thanks for the valuable info. I guess I have been lucky.

Great video! I agree- the. 003 kit is best. If you are pinning up cheap, off-brand cylinders, .003 kits are better because you those cylinders are not to OEM specs, and you will be able to get the keys to work much smoother in the cylinder. #LOCKBOSS

#Lockboss great video and info. We use .003 kits and definitely works excellent all the times for most of the conventional cylinders. We do have nickel silver pins for small format (SFIC) but we used them on medeco X4 to match the material of the key to avoid fast worn.

I have both a .003 and .005 kit and both work for pretty much everything but certain padlocks and auto, as well as owning specialty kits for Schlage, kwikset, and a few mini ones if I need something nickel silver. The large Schlage and kwikset hold the tools I use most and other than sfic or something special like medeco the Schlage kit gets used most for master keying.

#Lockboss. My next purchase will be a 003 kit after a factory Schlage kit. I have a factory Kwikset keying kit no. 272. I purchase replacement pins from CLK supply when needed and specify that it’s for Kwikset. You make it sound like you don’t the proper size pins for Kwikset. Am I looking at this wrong? I haven’t done a lot of keying in the past, mainly family and friends. You would be surprised how many friends a person actually has when taking rekeying up as a past time. Thank you for your excellent videos. Fixing to take this past time to the next level.

I use a .003 universal kit and I don't see a problem using it for kwikset locks. The largest difference is .001 which is less than the slop in the lock. Also, the kwikset pins are easier to pick due to the shape of the pins. Just my 2 cents😊 Happy locksmithing #Lockboss

Kwikset bottom pins are made that shape so that it is faster to resin the lock. You don’t need to worry about getting the pointy end in first.
As a side note, because the bottom of the cut on KW keys is wider, not using the KW bottom pins allows for more play on the key in-and-out while using the lock. This could be good or bad. Mainly, it makes the whole thing feel even more sloppy and cheap (if feeling any more cheap is possible with KW), but it also makes the typical bump key for KW to be cut wrong.

On kwikset I use a combination of the .003 and OEM because I have found that if your cuts go from really deep to really shallow example 616 the 1 tumber has very little to rest on and a .003 tumber tends to cock in chamber and OEM tumbler with a flatter bottom seems to work better #Lockboss

I would figure that brass pins on brass keys would wear down twice as fast as brass pins on nickel silver (NS) keys because the NS is wearing down less and the brass pins would wear down the same as it normally would. I’d like to see some real evidence of it but I’d agree NS pins and keys are always better. Thanks for sharing! #lockboss
