People might just view Agnes as a snob but I like her character because U find out why she is so jaded. She had to marry a man who was cruel to her because her brother left them penniless and she was thinking not just of herself but of her younger sister. People are forced to make hard decisions like marrying an unkind person if it means both they and their sister don't end up in the poorhouse.

When a parent dies and there is a much older sibling, it seems to make the jealous and envious of what the people around them do - they are NEVER wrong. I see this same pattern in my own sister. She is a glass half empty, I am a glass half full. I don't that I can't change the past, so don't let it interfere with my future - she can't get over the past and used it to establish a Mental Health facility, so she can tell everyone the "proper" why to think - because she paid to learn it.

Christine Baranski referring to her character in the First Person is the kind of dedication that makes her an icon. And I really like that Nixon has gotten a character that allows her to show her warm smile a lot. But my favourites are Peggy and Oscar! Both actors are phenomenal and their characters are easily the most interesting.

She is an amazing actress but the writing is so one note. No depth to the character. A quick Americanized version of Lady Violet. I was hoping she would be like Mrs Levinson. Far better written role. Full disclosure, I’ve not seen episode 3. The 1st two were such letdowns that I’ve decided to wait until they’re available to binge. I also want more from the servant class.

Solid first episode, second more involving and the third is a knockout. Fellowes’ writing period for television is expert - he begins with every literary cliche of the time, every relationship explained literally in dialogue, in character portrayal and by plot incident, every social convention set out, the staff hierarchy and their jobs shown, it seems it’s all just building blocks but suddenly you are living and breathing with them in that world and in those houses and you understand exactly why Agnes bristles and Bertha competes, Marion obeys and Oscar rule-breaks. It becomes just as important to you if someone is late for tea or wears the wrong dress as it is to them. Fellowes is a master of illustrating and dissecting class behaviour and etiquette that would flummox us today, yet we are so immersed in it we understand it. For us career is so critical, for them not having a career or any obvious employment is critical etc. And I don’t know who costumes this series but you could watch this with the sound turned off and just marvel at what everyone is wearing, the wardrobe is sensational, one breathtaking dress or suit and hat after another.

I find it more rewarding to see the good in those who are often perceived as bad rather than simply celebrate the virtues of those already seen as good. Take Agnes, for example; despite being seen as snobbish and traditional, she treats Peggy with genuine dignity. She deeply understands Peggy’s struggles, both as a person of color and as a woman, as highlighted in their dialogue. Unlike Marian, who offers help with a sense of charity that ends up offending Peggy, Agnes recognizes Peggy as someone engaged in a struggle and in need of assistance-no strings attached. Agnes’s respect for individuals who strive to help themselves, especially in her reference to Peggy, resonates profoundly with me. This principle, so powerfully conveyed, explains why Peggy, a determined woman, opts to work for Agnes, preferring the humility of an exit through the back door over returning to her rich father’s house. Sometimes, especially for those of us with strong ambitions, what we need isn’t charity but rather someone who can look us in the eye and offer an equal deal-simple as that.

I love Peggy. I hate when writers, write these protagonists who zone a lot and need time to do something/understand. Like Harry in Harry Potter, June in the handmaids tale (which was the worst one).

I haven't got HBO so this is new to me. I will wait til a couple of seasons are under belt and I will binge it. The gilded age has always facinated me and initiated my love of the old mansions of that time. Every small town had one or two.
My favorite movie depicting this time and its fall is Orson Welles "The Magnificent Ambersons", really great story.

    "We must have more money!".
Well, if that was not just a random phrase but a quote from D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner", as it seems...
Well, then things are going to get quite complicated for this family.

Julian is like David Attenborough. Giving more for us as they age. The refined part of life that we wish we had. Julian had very little to work with through downtown and had to make a few cliché storylines work. But I think he has more freedom with Americans.
