- St. Gianna Beretta Molla was an Italian pediatrician born in Magenta, Italy on October 4, 1922.
As a young girl, Gianna openly accepted her faith and the Catholic-Christian education her loving parents provided.
In 1942, Gianna began to study medicine in Milan. She was a diligent and hardworking student, both at the university and in her faith.
She earned degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Pavia in 1949, and in 1950 opened a medical office.
In 1952, Gianna specialized in pediatrics at the University of Milan and was soon drawn toward mothers, babies, the elderly and the poor.
She chose the vocation of marriage and dedicated herself toward "forming a truly Christian family."
In December 1954, Gianna met Pietro Molla and the couple was married in September 1955. Gianna had three children by 1959.
When Gianna became pregnant with her fourth child in 1961, doctors discovered a tumor in her uterus. She was given three choices: an abortion, a complete hysterectomy, or the removal of the tumor.
For her child, Gianna opted to remove only the tumor.
Her child's life was saved, for which Gianna graciously thanked the Lord. However, after the operation, complications continued throughout her pregnancy.
A few days before the baby was to be born, Gianna clearly expressed to her family: "If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose the child. I insist on it. Save the baby."
On April 21, 1962, Gianna Emanuela Molla was delivered by Caesarean section. The doctors tried to ensure both lives would be saved, but a week after the baby was born, Gianna passed away from an infection.
Gianna was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in 2004. Her husband and their children attended her canonization ceremony, making this the first time a husband witnessed his wife's canonization.
St. Gianna Beretta Molla is the patron saint of mothers, physicians, and unborn children. Her feast day is celebrated on April 28.

I am a medical student and I look up to St. Gianna so much. Because of her, I know I can be a great wife, mother, and doctor and do it all to glorify God. St. Gianna, pray for us!

At the end of 2021 I started asking St. Gianna for her intercession for healing from a painful fibroid tumor. So far this year ('22) I've barely had any pain. I've been able to get back to work, do my chores etc, while before I would be taking painkillers by the end of the day.
Very brave Gianna. Pray for all doctors and expectant mother's.
Made me cry, beautiful.
Simply a very brave woman / and a mother.
My name is gianna reny . I was named after st gianna . It is now , when I’m 12 years old , I knew more about her . She is so great.
I was also named after her and now I’m 11 and also love her!
The two of you - Gianna Reny and EmeraldDragon Nation - please share your feelings about this great saint with other kids your age. It's through young people like you that we can change the future of this world.
Saint Gianna, pray for my life.
I read somewhere that her daughter became a physician for the elderly.
Yes . . . the daughter who was born from St. Gianna's last pregnancy. Her name is Gianna Emmanuela Molla and she is a geriatric physician.
🙏 What a blessing.
Now this is a saint who’s relatable. I feel like so many other saints out there aren’t relatable at all. Here’s one who went to school and got married.
YES! We agree! It proves that even doing the most ordinary things with great love can bring you into sainthood!
Look up Carlo Acutis.
She is so down to earth too!

Before Now by John Hobart
Wow God that's sad.
Pity. She deserved better
She thanked the Lord for saving her child's life. She knew her daughter deserved better than the heinous act of abortion. Today her daughter is a physician herself.
Name something better than being a Saint…………….
