Complete Bikepacking Bag Setup For $45!? LIDL BIKEPACKING BAGS REVIEW

- I bought three bikepacking bags from Lidl the other day for the reasonable price of 45 Euro. Even if I didn't end up liking the bags, the price was just to low to resist trying them out. The set consiste of a Handlebar Bag (9L), a Frame Bag (2L) and a Saddle Bag (8L).
Have you ever bought cycling gear from Lidl before? If so what is your opinion about their products?
Bike Touring Mike the bags look virtually identical to the Roswheel ones I bought on Amazon. Great value for the money! I have purchased a ton of cycling gear from Lidl including a helmet, a repair stand, and some riding clothes but the best deal so far has been the pair of panniers for $12 US.
bkaufman91 - The repair stand was particular good value for money, I see similar repair stands for 10x the price
I have a set of Crivit LED lights which are very good value for money 👍
@@rhysb402 I bought a set too. They had automatic braking light. Amazing value lasted a year of daily use.
@@ben1447 yeah I haven't had mine that long yet but they are going fine so far. The brake light is a pretty cool feature too as you said.
I love my Ortieb bags, they are not cheap but will be with you your whole life. I use them for holidays and also for shopping every day.
I bought two X 20 litre roll top pannier bags from Lidl five years ago and they were and still are great value.
I did a lot of shopping and carrying with them and often had them packed to overflowing above the unrolled brim carrying more than double their closed capacity and totally overloaded. One of them has a taped seam at an outside zipper coming apart but I must see if it can be repaired before it gets too bad because they really were amazing value for €9 or €10 each.
Too good to give up on even if the repair might cost more than the bag originally. I probably apply too much sentimental value to things that have served me well.
I'd definitely buy them again if I came across them for sale.
I got a bike trailer last year so they aren't used and abused very much now.
Other than that, I got a heavy D Lock, lights, a saddle and various other miscellaneous items I can't think of right now and I'm generally very satisfied with the price to quality comparison with everything from Lidl.
For anything branded from anywhere else you will have to pay multiple times the price for just similar quality.
If I were doing long tours I would definitely spend the big bucks for well known and proven quality and reassurance.
But for someone like me, commuting and every day utilitarian use (and fairly heavy use!), I'd spend €15 on a Lidl (I'm sure it was branded Crivit?) bicycle bag any day.
Excellent concised review, in addition to the bags and fitting them it was interesting to see the size of the tent and sleeping bags you were using

I use Wittkop saddles from lidle since years and I am very satisfied. Since I do this I don't have any uncomfort. I use also a wire cyclocomputer I bought 6 years ago and it have a lot of functions, sometime more than a much more expensive Sygma. On the other hand the wireless cyclocomputers are crap. In general I am satisfied with the staff they are selling. The products you tested weren't sold in Romania, but now I will look for them. Thank you.
I also have Wittkop saddles on two of my bikes, and they are really great. The bags might be avaliabe in Romania in coming weeks, they tend to be released on different weeks in different countries. England and Germany had these for sale a couple of weeks ago, so it's different from country to country.
Good review and an honest opinion is always welcome, subbed. Happy trails, stay safe. I bought a headlamp, a pump with gauge and some inner tubes for my MTB touring bike. I try to avoid the centre isle to save from spending too much money.
Yeah, that is probably a good advice. It's easy to impulse buy stuff you don't need in that centre isle. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending n how you look at it) my Lidl is really tiny, so if there is something you really want to buy you have to be there when they ope the store on Monday.

A bit surprising but a really interesting review video. I have bought quite lot of hiking/biking/trekking gear from Lidl, but frankly I do not actually use any of those on my bike touring trips - the quality is not good enough. I mainly use Lidl products while commuting or for shorter biking/hiking trips. However, I think that those bags that your reviewed are good enough for my family members, The reason is that they go on biking tourd just once or at most twice during the season. Thx for the tip Mike. And keep producing for such great content.
Yeah, that is my plan as well. They can easily fit theis clothes and sleeping gear in those bags so for 45 Euros it's great value.

Thanks for the concern Dave. As you probably know Sweden has takes a kind of laid back approach to this whole Covid-19 thing. So thing are pretty much running as usual around here. We have been training on this whole social distancing thing since we were born. At least us up here in the north. Everyone keeps their distance to each other. Regarding the bags I'm probably giving them to one of my sons so they can use them on an upcoming tour. By the way, congrats on breaking the 1000 subs mark Dave. Well deserved!

Thanks Dino! No, I'm probably going to use them as extra bags when I want to take one of my sons with me on an overnight tour. They will serve their purpose well those occurrences.
I wanted a use for my foldable day pack while cycling if I was carrying extra food and drinks, so I thought up a hack. The front tube bag harness you have works fine if I put my day pack into it but it might be a little loose. I bought 2m of 5cm wide organization velcro strap and I simply split that length at the head tube, wound it under and over my day pack and handlebars twice and stuck it on at the ends. Pretty stable on roads, pavement and a bit of gravel. And cheap, got it for about US$7, easily replaceable.
Hi there. Ive used Lidl bicycle bags, panniers, clothing and bike stand for exapmlpe many times. Its not top of the range ofcourse but its a good enough quality for a good price and they are getting better year by yaear. Its also good idea for a trial to make sure if thats the way I want to travel and buy some better onece in the future. I know now Im a classic fan so I prefer panniers all the way. I'm also a pannier guy. But I wanted to try these out, since they were so cheap. I'm probably going to use them for an overnight when it gets warm around here. Afterwards I'm probably going to let my son use them when we go on a family bike tour. For longer tours my Ortlieb panniers is my weapon of choice.

Lidl is one of my favourite supermarkets. I've bought a few Crivit things that include chain oil and cycling helmet which have been very good. Also I bought some very light rain covers for shoes, and cycling gloves or bungees. I think they are good for small things
I tend to shop at Lidl when I'm touring for the fact that they alwas have these huge open windows by the cashier. Which means I can park my bike outside and be able to see it from the cashier and notice if someone is messing with it.
I also have a cycling helmet from Lidl, I've been using it since 2013, the LED is long gone, but the helmet does a great job.

Thanks for the video Mike. I'm not aware of Lidl here in the States but I have bought what seems like similar products by Roswheel & Rock Bros on eBay/Aliexpress. I have a Roswheel 8L saddlebag which I like but doesn't have the cargo netting. I use it to carry a change on my commute to work. I agree that the saddlebag is probably the best item, I don't like the way the inexpensive HB bags prevent you from using part of the HB on drop bars. I have the Rock Bros. frame bag and it is more useful than the Lidl because it is larger but cost a bit more $$. Rides of Japan did a video on the same three items as inexpensive alternatives.
I'm probably trying thes out for an overnight later this year. But the main purpose of bying them was to have them around for when I'm taking one of my sons with me on tour. I think they'll be perfect for those times. If I were to buy some bikepacking bags in the future I would most certainly opt for some bigger ones. Plus a handlebar bag that has some kind of distance from the handlebar itself if you knw what I mean. So that the cables don't risk being damaged by the weight of the bag.
Yeah, I think I have seen his video way back. Fun fact, the guy who has that channel is originally from Piteå, Sweden our neighboring town.

Haven't finished the video yet, but I am telling you already that LIDL and ALDI have some cycling stuff which is extremely good value for the money you pay. As a matter of fact I still have a winter cycling jersey for nearly 8 years that I bought at ALDI

Hej, I have some great biking glasses from Lidl, with 3 sets of lenses. We had the same bikepacking bags in Lidl UK too, only £30. I also have the Planet X ones and for the money they're fantastic. Lots of space if you take a bivvy bag rather than a tent. The seat pack and/or frame bag can also be used with your regular panniers if needed. I would just use the frame bag and load everything else onto Malin's bike! Good to see the Vitus again. Ed
Hi Ed! Yes, I noticed that you Britons got the bags at an even lower price. Brexit? Haha, load everything on Malin's bike. That poor thing would last a mile with more than two panniers on it. I'm hoping to be able to go on a short bikepacking trip with the Vitus as soon as it dries up and gets a lot warmer. The next couple of days around here looks ok though. Above 10C in the afternoon. Might even be able to pop out for an overnighter. Social distancing by bike touring.

Yes, very affordable and great quality for the money. I have a handlebar bag, frame bag and seat pack. I recommend them all. I have lots of stuff from PlanetX, and the service has always been fantastic

Lidl seem to have this gear on different weeks in different countries. I know the UK and Germany has already had them. But then again, these are some anusual times. Hope everything is OK with you in Spain!

As an American I have no idea with Lidl is but I'm intrigued.
Lidl is kind of our version of Walmart (only the stores are a lot smaller). Aldi might be the closest comparison.
Hey nice value for the money - you have said the drybag in the front should be waterproof? How is it with the other bags? The zipper of the framebag looks waterproof too.
Sorry if I didn't hear your comments in the video about the waterproofness of the other bags.
According to the manufacturer all three bags should be waterproof. I forgot to mention that in the video.

I think as a starting kit for backpacking and the cost there not bad , on a slightly different note, I know you have the cloud up 2 tent , I think the sides slope so much and space for a full touring bike ie panniers front and back rack pack and handle bars bag , it's a tight little virtually 1man tent .
Couldn't agree with you more David. My rule of thumb is that a 2 person can almost always be considered a 1 person tent if you intend to have some panniers inside, or just be able to move around a bit. That's why I bought the 2 person model. I have another tent for when I'm taking my wife along on a bike tour.

I bought exactly the same frame bag for 4eur in Billa shop (in Czech Republic) and unfortunatelly it's poorly glued so it ripped in the joint. But for 4eur i wasnt any surprised lol
Why not attaching a back carrier and using conventionell sidepacks?

Also, do you mind telling the size of your frame? it looks like you got some space in the inner triangle after installing the frame bag, that would help as a reference since my bike is a size medium. Hi Pio! My bike is an XL. I'm afraid there are no online links for these bags. I think you're only able to buy them in physical Lidl stores. Nice affordable set! Iam only 1.7 m tall always have problem with these type of set up.
One of the problem I encounter is the cable on my bike is not internal. This means the top tube bag strap is in straping the wire as well.
It's the same on my bike as well. Are your cables on top or underneath the top tube? If they are on top you can probably fit the straps underneath the cables. If the cables are under the top tube (like mine are it's a bit tricker, but still solvable. I tighten my straps just enough but not too much, and by doing this they don't interfer with the cables. It's a bit difficult to explain in words but it should work, with a little patience.
@@BikeTouringMike there was a gap between the cable and the frame, so I managed. My other bike, a flat bar bike, the cables are on top of the toptube makes it impossible to do it.

Yeah, that was my though initially if they were crap. But they actually turned out to be pretty decent. So I'm going to keep them and use them as extra bags when I go on tours with one of my sons for instance. Thanks for the encouragement. Stay safe yourself!

Hi Dziz! I will definitely do that in the future. The only problem is that I live right around the Arctic Circle, and when I shot this video 1,5 months ago everything was covered in snow. At the moment some trails have started to dry up, but it's still below freezing during the nights. So what I'm planning to do is to do an overnight tour as soon as it gets around +5C during the night. So look out for that video!

Hej Jens! Jag köpte mina för två månader, och där jag bor tog de slut första dagen. Brukar vara så med Lidls kampanjer. Men populära kampanjer brukar komma igen, så jag skulle inte vara förvånad om de kommer tillbaka under sensommaren/hösten.
I think the bags are good for light touring, but for carrying weight e.g. when travelling by bike, nothing beats quality panniers like Vaude or Ortlieb. I personally dont like the bags because those increase your center of gravity and the bike becomes less mauverable.
I agree with you. I use Ortlieb bags for my tours. I'm mostly going to use these as extra bags when I take one of my sons with me for an overnight tour.

Well, the tricky thing about buying thesebag is that they are only sold in physical Lidl stores. And they only sell them in weekly campaigns, usually once in the spring and once in the fall. Here in Sweden where I live they are currently avaliable this week for example.So they are a bit difficult to get hold of.

I have a rear rack, just not on this bike.
With prices like these I really do wonder where, under what working conditions, with what social standards and at what wages these bags are produced. For my good conscience I like to spend more money (even significantly more), especially since there are many bikepacking bags on the market that are in fact produced in Germany / in Great Britain / in the USA. At the same time I get a quality in material and manufacturing that doesn't break after a short time, but gives me many years of pleasure. Instead of just buying cheap, I rather buy fair and buy quality!

It seems like they are rolling these out at different periods in each country. If you're lucky they might be avaliable at a later time.

I wasn't impressed by the stitching 7:26, but I have no experience with any other such product. Where does the food go? I guess I can forage and hunt along the way, and cook my soup in a bag made from a reindeer's stomach, heated with hot rocks from the campfire!

Haha! Back to basics. You that was my concern as well. I could fit minimal clothes, but the stove and food had no room. But as I've said in other comments I'm probably going to let one of my suns use it for their gear when we go out for some father & son touring.
