  • Scoot Boots - 1.5 year Update
    Short Version: These are still awesome and work the best for us. Lasair is able to throw steel, nailed on shoes and utterly destroy other boots. Scoots have held up the best against all his forceful abuse. They hold up to all kinds of riding reliably. Obviously, the more extreme you ride, the greater chance of losing a boot…we've tested this ad nauseam.
    For those of you who love to watch Lasair's antics and personality - this is a great video to watch. Remember how clingy he gets after a race? Yup. We just had a race 2/24/18 and now look at him. Also…I'm really allergic to hay, that's why I usually don't let him lick me. He was just too funny and I was distracted trying to do my video so he got some good licks in. The result is me scratching for the rest of the video like I have some skin disease. Please excuse that. It's just a contact allergy from the hay proteins/allergens in his saliva.
    Lasair has been able to throw these boots off at a standstill when forceful pounding at a canter for 25 miles doesn't budge them (See 20MT Ride Video). Deep mud have been able to pull them off (1 out of 4 came off in deep mud) - when I got off to retrieve it, I almost lost my laced on Ariat Terrain H20 boots to the mud as well. The boot was stuck about 2 feet down in the mud and I almost fell on my butt trying to pull it out. Lesser mud than this haven't been able to pull off the boots. We've galloped over 34 mph and had them stay on, just to lose them all in a turbo boost at 20 mph. We've cantered over huge rocks in a shallow water stream bed, the boots getting bashed from all angles left and right. They stay on at slower speeds, but at higher speeds (above 34mph), I could see them taking too many hits, too often in rapid succession and them coming off. So what I’m saying is - for normal, aka "Sane" riding - these boots should work perfectly for most riders. They should also last you for quite a long time. We've tested them to the max and while, yes, we have been able to exceed their capabilities…it also proves to me just how much they can take. Surprisingly, through ALL the abuse we've put them through, we've never actually broken the body of the boot. We've torn front straps, torn pastern straps, broke off screw heads, and wore through the sole at the breakover, but all those parts were replaceable and boots were still usable.
    I would love to see more improvements (if possible) to these boots. But as it stands, these have outperformed any other boots (and steel shoes) we've abused…and we really know how to put them to the test.
    Update:
    I just realized that I may have inadvertently poo poo'ed on a bunch of different boots by saying talking about the "Big 3" and how the all encompassing boots are not great "performance boots". Please understand that these statements are from my personal experience and are "shortcut/generalization" statements. I can back it up with data and it's also from what I've seen from others in the Endurance world. BUT. First and foremost is whatever works for your horse. So you can totally ignore those statements if those type boots work for you. You can also ignore those statements if you do easy type riding. I never want to discourage people from trying out all options to find the best fit for their horse.

    You are such a great spokesmodel with an appropriately goofy sidekick. Thank you for reinforcing my scoot boot decision. My mare is more comfortable with them on that she’s ever been on the trails, though we are no where near your level. Hopefully we’ll get a little braver over time:)

    Both you and your horse are adorable!! Talking about boots though, my horse and I have had an awful time with her fit. Trina has been wearing Cavallos on the front with a great fit and no problem, but the back hoofs are impossible. (back are a smaller/narrower size) The Cavallo people have bent over backwards to try to accommodate, but Trina is between sizes and the insert just doesn't make up the difference. I saw another rider try the Scoots, but during their first ride, the boot was completely pulled off in shallow mud. It really turned me off to the boots as Trina and I go through all kinds of terrain. Based on your videos, I'm inclined to give them a try. Maybe the other horse wasn't fit properly. Fingers crossed. In any event, I'll continue with your fabulous videos.

      The thing about boots is to realize that they are just like our own shoes. The way to get the right fit is to try on different ones and walk around in them. Some have break-in periods, sometimes you have to adjust. Like when you wear new boots and you get a blister for the first week or two, but then it's perfect going forward. There are tons of little ways to adjust the fit. Fit and size are two different things. So, if you can find a boot fitter that carries many different brands and models that can let you try them on your horse and let the horse run around to test, that is best. Different brands and models will fit better on different shaped hooves. So like Scoots have Rounds and Slims (Ovals). Mudstraps are great for mud/challenging terrain. I have a ton of videos on the Scoots, just let me know if you have questions.

    Thank you so much Vyshtia, for this very instructive video. You answered and demonstrated visually everything I wanted to know about these boots! As perfect as I’d thought they’d be, I realized that they are probably a little thin in the toe for my guy who because of a slight neurological toe drag on a hind, would probably wear one out pretty quickly. Boo hoo. But thank you for sharing your journey! I’ll be looking at your reviews of other boots.

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 4 lety

      You're welcome! You may want to give these a try. They last longer than any other boot I've tried. All the other boots are made of a hard plastic, no bend. So they shave off. Because these are softer, they don't shave off, they just bend and recover. Most people are getting 700-1000 miles on them. =)

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 3 lety

      No solvent. The TPU plastic of the Scoots are actually sensitive to chemicals. To get it off, you need to use a rotary tool and grind it off. There may be other physical ways to get it off too. You don't have to get it 100% off - just enough to make it functional again. No big lumps and gunks of glue.

    I love your horse to! I love your vids! I've had my gelding horse for 20 years. He is just recovering from an abscess in the right front leg. My farrier wants him to have a boot on because the pasture is very, very muddy and we live upstate New York where the ground gets very hard. Would you recommend a Scoot Boot for pasture wear? Would you just put one boot on for the abscess foot, or would you purchase two boots for both front legs??

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 5 lety

      Thank you! Many people use the Scoots for pasture wear, rehab, and medicine. I would do both fronts so it stays even. 🙂

    I use renegades to ride to and from, and at the beach. They fill up with wet sand that compacts under the horses sole and don't drain. I'm thinking of trying scoot boots. Do you think they would be any better in draining?
    Thxs.

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 3 lety

      Absolutely. Because of all the openings in this boot, one of it's biggest strengths is that debris flies out of it with every step. This slow motion video will show you all the sand flying out of the front of the boot. czcams.com/video/prGfjdapJtQ/video.html

    Did you by chance use their "sizing service"? Or did you size yourself? I am curious if they are accurate and do a good job with sizing as I really don't want to mess up the sizing since they are kind of expensive!

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 3 lety +1

    How do these do in deep mud? Like suction cup thick mud? Like trail riding.

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 3 lety

      Better than boots that are made out of leather/canvas. The slickness of the Scoots make it so mud doesn't have much to grab onto. They also have lots of open holes for mud to escape. Boots that are all enclosed fill up with mud, get heavy, and are easily pulled off. Now, I've been in mud that have pulled off my own, tightly laced up riding boots before. I've been in mud that I can barely pull my own leg out of before...so don't underestimate the suction power of mud. That type of mud will probably be able to pull off the Scoots as well.

    Do most people only wear boots on the front or do you put on 4? I want to get away from shoeing, she usually wears 4 shoes. We only do trail riding, cabyering in fields, cross paved roads, and climb rocky mountainy paths.

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  Před 3 lety

      I do all 4's when I am protecting against hazards. The boots protect against nails, screws, broken glass, sharp rocks - just like our own shoes do.
